The document discusses how the author's magazine product both follows and challenges conventions of real media products. It analyzes several design elements of the magazine, including the masthead, splash line, cover lines, contents page, columns, and article layout and photos. While some elements like the masthead and cover lines follow conventions, others like the non-traditional cover photo, messy hairstyle, and posterized article photo aim to give an "indie vibe" and go against conventions. Overall, the author tries to design the magazine to have a cool, rebellious style but still be comprehensible to readers.
1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE ,
DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTION OF
REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
2. I think my magazine goes against most conventions
layout wise. However also follows many of the normal
conventions theses are some of the details of the
magazine that I follow and don’t follow such as cover
lines, headline, strap line ,splash line and the main
image. Through out this presentation Il be analyzing
these things in detail and seeing the difference
between my magazine and other magazines that
follow conventions.
Front cover
3. • This is one of the sections that has followed conventions in
the magazine that for me follows convention with the large
font on the top of the page being the first thing that the
reader sees and the bright contrasting colours to the
background makes it stand out.
• Another feature to this mast head that makes it stand out is
the spacing between the writing which allows each letter
for the word to stand out to the reader as this will be the
first thing that they see when they start to read the
magazine from left to right.
• Because this font on the mast head is so significant and
stands out so much from the rest of the magazine that you
can have other images layer over them and the people will
still be able to read them .
Mast head
4. Splash Line
This strap line is the line of information at the top of
the magazine that helps advertise the magazine. In
other magazines it can also advertise another story
in the magazine ones that may not be the main
story in the but still quite a big article.
This is an example of a splash line
advertising a story in the
magazine. It even has a small
thumb nail picture on there to
intrigue the reader.
5. Main image : • In the main image of my magazine front
cover I have gone against convention in the
way he is dressed in quite an indie fashion.
Eg indie clothes which are quite vintage and
mod
• Eye contact in the model is else where
other than at the camera giving the
magazine a cool vibe to the magazine. This
clashes quite nicely with the background of
my magazine being the brick wall because
its not very mainstream in the way it follows
the usual plain back ground of a magazine
such as this oasis example
• The models hair is against conventions in
its messy style which not many mainstream
artists will have but many indie artist will.
This in an example
Of a indie magazine
similar to mine
6. Head line
Subheading
In this section I have chosen go with the conventions of a normal magazine
As there aren't many magazine that would do anything different as its one of the most
Important selling points of the magazine that with really engage the reader . This style of writing that
I have chosen really lives up to the name indie in its quite cool style. My magazine is different to
The oasis example in the way that the headline and subheadline in it is a coverline and not centre placed
Much like a lot of magazines
I have also followed convention in the way that my magazine
Has a subheading. Its got this because much like the headline it
Is very much a necessity which the magazine needs in order to
Make the reader buy the magazine .
7. Cover lines
Cover lines in my opinion follow
convention like most indie magazines and
other mainstream magazines
In the way the font is and the way its
Placed to the side of the magazine .
Another factor that shows it
follows quite an indie vibe is the
graphics such as the lines
between the writing which
separate the storys .This is also
similar to many mainstream pop
magazines. What I have tried to
do it make It seem more indie by
editing the colours to fit well with
the background to create an indie
vibe
I think these lines tend to give
Of an indie vibe to the reader.
I personally think that this is a
quite cool but still follows
convention of a normal indie
magazine.
8. Contents page
• My contents page I believe doesn’t really
follow convention. This reason being its structure
isn't Layed out in the normal form.
• Such things as the placement of the headline,
contents and the main image give of quite an indie
Vibe.
• I think many other magazines would be different
To mine as I think with this one I've tried to push it as
much as I can with going against convention however
still being careful so as to not make it confusing for
the reader
9. Columns
In this section I'm going to be analyzing
the columns in my article.
In my opinion I think these columns are quite different
and quit weird in the sense that they do follow
conventions but they try and bend conventions to an
extent were it still looks normal but isn't completely
different as to confuse the reader to the layout of the
magazine. In my opinion the colours are quite indie
and try to give of quite a cool style to the magazine.
However the layout and were the columns are placed
follow convention
10. The main image
In my contents page the main image is different
and my artist is in a pose so that he is out the way
of writing. He’s wearing quite indie clothes again
much like he is on the cover page. Much like the
cover its against convention In the way he’s not
looking at the camera and the eye contact is else
were.
This is similar to this example of a real contents
page as the artist in this picture is also looking a
different way other than the camera which makes
him look quite cool. You could also say that
because he's wearing the sunglasses you don’t
were he's looking which also makes him seem quite
cool because it seems as though he is quite
rebellious .
11. Article
I think that my article has followed conventions in the layout as its pretty simple much like any
other magazine article. Such the the picture on one side of the page and on the other page a
article and the information. However I think that article picture of my artists is against
convention because of the unordinary colour scheme that I have chosen and the fact that you
cant see my artists face and his eye contact.
12. My article pretty much follows conventions through out the
whole page for instance the layout an the writing for the
article isn't really against convention and is still quite
normal the way its written and the way it portrays my artist.
My artists is quite cool in the way he speaks however he is
like any other teenage kid so I've portrayed him like a
normal kid that likes to do normal things like go out with
mates and playing fifa.
My article is very different to the Madonna article as I
think that she is a lot more mature and professional in the
way she speaks. She also speaks not about her music
carrier but her trip to Malawi and all her experiences there
were as my artist just talks about how his carrier is going
currently and what his plans are for the future
13. Article picture Eye contact:
This is follows conventions
pretty well as there nothing
unordinary about it. My artist
has quite a cool look to him
in the way he's looking very
seriously at the camera with
no emotion this makes him
seem quite rebellious.
Picture Effects:
In this picture my artists photo
has been posterised which
brings out all of there
shadows and takes away the
detail in the photo such as
spots, wrinkles or scars ect. I
think this effect makes my
artist and the magazine seem
quite indie also quite against
convention.
14. Article picture
The difference with this article
picture is that you can tell its based
more for a pop magazine then an
indie magazine. The eye contacts
may be away from the camera but
you can tell its not trying to be
against convention because of the
look of Madonna's face which is
quite seductive. This is to attract
both male and female audiences.
