     Cover 2.Q May 2012
    the real best of Edition
The background of Q
• Q, a popular music magazine published on a monthly basis offering music lovers the
opportunity to read up on the latest gossip and news on there favourite music artists. First
published in October 1986 Q offered a greater quality of printing and images to the market
with a subtitle “the modern guide to music and more” insinuating it was more up to date and
better than other competitors. They originally were going to be called (cue) as in when
cueing a record ready to play. However, they felt that this would be a misrepresentation of
the content within the magazine and thought that a single letter heading would appear more
    prominent on a stand.
• A key feature that this magazine is famous for is its “100 greatest lists” that are found in the
magazine every other week. Ranging from artists to songs and much more.

                                 THE FOOTER
The purpose of each feature on this magazine
• The masthead- in this magazine the mast head is a clearly defined red square with the letter Q in the middle. This is a well recognisable
feature and is clear to the audience that this is what the magazine is called. The use of a single letter makes it stand out and unique to
    all other magazines.
• The main image- in this issue Q has chosen to use multiple main images as it fits the contents of the magazine. “the real best of” it
shows images of old and new artists all of whom have been hits. This therefore diversifies the audience and makes it stand out to all
    generics.
• The barcode – this is a general feature on all magazines however is placed above the images to make it clearer this is used to sell the
product and also in this case has the date on it and therefore indicates the issue number.
• The main sell line on this magazine is boldly indicated on the middle of the page “the real best of” this shows that the main story in the
magazine is a classification f the greatest music artists chosen by Q this will obviously be biased towards the magazines audience.
• The footer- this issue includes a footer specifying the other stories inside. “gotye”, “iron sky” these are artists which make me assume
the target audience is more around chart than any specific.
• The chime- the theme of this magazine is bright colours to make it stand out on a magazine stand. The logo itself is a bright red square
with a contrasting white letter. The sell line is gold a colour which is rarely used and stands out making it a special this also uses black
    contrasting letters on it.

ANALYSIS OF CONTENTS PAGE
                               (Title/date of magazine analysed)

- Q is a popular music magazine which has a diverse audience as it features chart music of all genres. In this case it tries to use
colors and designs which attract all audiences. This specific contents page has a color scheme of mainly white and red
contrasting colors which stand out to help direct readers to the place they want to go quickly and easily.
- This page features the l09ogo next to a large heading clearly stating that this is the contents page. Next to this we find the
issue number with the date to clarify the order of magazines for those that collect them and those that are after specific
    articles .
- The page features two images. One which dominates the page at the far right easily taking up a third of the area . This would
be a key feature that a large majority of the readers would have been waiting for. Its an image of the well recognized
Courteeners. Which features a pull quote from the artist with a page number. The second is in the “Q review section. This
shows that it is telling different pieces of information in this section as it is subtitled and boxed off. This is smaller and less
dominant of the page showing it is more insignificant.
- The multimodal ways of telling the audience the information is well used and clear to the left of the page it has a “ features”
section this is made bold using a red background. Below this there are a list of the stories inside with the page numbers in
red and the brief description of the page in black.
- The “special" section is shown with gold writing to show its specialty and is all about one band “oasis” this is a well
recognized band which is obviously the key selling point of the magazine.

Analysis of double page spread
• This double page spread is primarily about the artist “lily Allen” Lilly Allen is a punk/rock artist with attitude which ids clearly
defined by the lay out on this page. Straight away attitude is shown by the connotations of the writing . Its big bold lettering
stands out but the un generic design of cut outs stuck on in a jiggered pattern shows rebellious features . This looks as if it is
done by hand which catches the readers eye.
• The main image on the page is of lily Allen herself. In which she is posing like a teen with attitude “in the image she posed
with her hands behind her back and her head tilted in a way as if to be trying to hear the audience gossip but doesn’t really
care. This image is the only one on the page which helps state what the article is on about and as it dominates the page it
shows her importance. As well as her outfit which is a tartan men's shirt, her eye line directed at the reader shows her
power. The tattoo on her wrist is shown of with her pose of wrists facing upwards.
• The article is titled “people think I'm an attention seeker but I'm just honest” and is written in a way which is slightly slang
to show effortless work in the interview and create a real sense of the artists personality and involvement between her and
the reader. The colour scheme on this article is black and white two simple colours which you would think are very bland
however the way that they’ve used them to contrast one another helps add appeal to the page.
