UNIQUE indexes have long held a unique position among constraints: they are the only way to express a constraint that two tuples in a table conflict without resorting to triggers and locks (which severely impact performance). But what if you want to impose the constraint that one person can't be in two places at the same time? In other words, you have a schedule, and you want to be sure that two periods of time for the same person do not overlap. This is nearly impossible to do efficiently with the current version of PostgreSQL -- and most other database systems. I will be presenting Generalized Index Constraints, which is being submitted for inclusion in the next PostgreSQL release, along with the PERIOD data type (available now from PgFoundry). I will show how these can, together, offer a fast, scalable, and highly concurrent solution to a very common business requirement. A business requirement is still a requirement even if your current database system can't do it!

Implementing the Future of PostgreSQL Clustering with Tungsten

Users have traditionally used database clusters to solve database availability and performance requirements. However, clustering requirements are changing as hardware improvements make performance concerns obsolete for many users. In this talk I will discuss how the Tungsten project uses master/slave replication, group communications, and rules processing to develop easy-to-manage database clusters that solve database availability, protect data, and address hardware utilization. Our implementation is based on existing PostgreSQL capabilities like Londiste and WAL shipping, which we eventually plan to replace with our own log-based replication. For the small business support person being able to provide PostgreSQL hosting for a small set of specific applications without having to build and support several Pg installations is necessary. By building a multi-tenant Pg cluster with one tenant per database and each application in it's own schema maintenance and support is much simpler. Building Grails applications with PostgreSQL

The talk starts with a basic overview of the Grails framework. We will cover the basic building blocks (domains, controllers, views, grails command line), and build a small application.
During the talk, we will configure Grails to connect to PostgreSQL, introduce strategies for mapping the Grails ORM (GORM) domain objects to familiar PostgreSQL features such as keys, indexes, data types, and other options. We will also discuss executing stored procedures from Grails.
At the end of the talk, the developer will come away with a good high-level overview of the grails platform, and how it can be used to develop applications based on a PostgreSQL database.

Often times, when we make changes in a database we also want to "do something useful." Simply sending and email or triggering an ETL into a non-postgres system like Lucene is also a bit convoluted and painful. By using asynchronous messaging, we can make this simple. There have been a few attempts in the past to add into postgres the ability to queue external tasks, but with AMQP you get a complete package.
pg_amqp marries the AMQP standard into PostgreSQL providing transaction-aware message queueing. We'll talk about how easy it can be to get an AMQP enabled postgresql up and running with pg_amqp. We'll also discuss the caveats that exist in pg_amqp (currently implementing AMQP 0.8) and how AMQP 1.0 will eventually solve them.

UNIQUE indexes have long held a unique position among constraints: they are the only way to express a constraint that two tuples in a table conflict without resorting to triggers and locks (which severely impact performance). But what if you want to impose the constraint that one person can't be in two places at the same time? In other words, you have a schedule, and you want to be sure that two periods of time for the same person do not overlap. This is nearly impossible to do efficiently with the current version of PostgreSQL -- and most other database systems. I will be presenting Exclusion Constraints, which has been accepted for the next PostgreSQL release, along with the PERIOD data type (available now from PgFoundry). I will show how these can, together, offer a fast, scalable, and highly concurrent solution to a very common business requirement. A business requirement is still a requirement even if your current database system can't do it!

In this talk, we will be covering the Simpycity and Exceptable libraries, a Python-based database abstraction which provides an ORM-equivalent stack around stored procedure development.
We will be covering why stored procedures are an important tool in database application development, how to design business logic abstractions for your database, and how Exceptable aids in providing for cleaner client code.
Finally, we will cover example model code implementing the Simpycity abstractions, and cover how these abstractions isolate the underlying data model without damaging functionality or data access.
