Pulmonary circulation transports deoxygenated blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs where it becomes oxygenated, and then back to the left side of the heart. Systemic circulation then transports the oxygenated blood from the left ventricle through the arteries and returns it to the right atrium via the veins, except for some blood in the hepatic portal vein which passes through the liver first before returning to the heart. Humans have a double circulatory system with one circuit for pulmonary circulation and one for systemic circulation which together circulate blood throughout the body.
