Here we examine public health in Metro Atlanta, including issues of food security, access to healthy foods, life expectancies, obesity, and smoking. Public health issues are often associated with income level, and we find that counties with higher median household incomes tend to have higher life expectancies. Obesity is also associated with income at the county level, as counties with higher median household incomes tend to have higher percentages of obese adults.

COVID-19 Impacts on the Food System and Food Security in Los Angeles County

Description
The COVID-19 pandemic has created a crisis in our food system and widespread food insecurity. In L.A. County (LAC), almost 1 million households experienced food insecurity in the first two months of the pandemic. This was documented by our research team, comprised of experts in public health, health policy, and spatial and data science, and our government partner - the LAC Emergency Food Security Branch. The causes of food insecurity during the pandemic are likely complex: there are failures in the "last mile" of food distribution (e.g., food supply shortages, closure of food outlets), and people are facing many challenging accessing food because they have lost jobs, incomes, school meals, and because it's difficult to safely visit food stores and food banks. We are using multiple novel sources of data, including population survey data and secondary data on food outlets and food assistance programs, to quickly monitor changes to population food access and security and changes to the "last mile" of the food distribution system in LAC. This research will identify the people and places most at risk for food insecurity, propose timely interventions and solutions, and advance the science of food systems and food justice.

The Girl Scouts Campus Kitchen program seeks funding to bring The Campus Kitchens Project to East St. Louis through Girl Scout outreach programs. The program will have Girl Scouts prepare and deliver nutritious meals to community members using donated food. It aims to serve 100 people by January 2016 and educate 100 more about programs addressing food insecurity. The program coordinator will collaborate with schools and food sources to implement the kitchens and promote community meals.
Community Health Assessment Presentation

Introduction
Food Insecurity and Food Deserts
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) food insecurity is the
inability to access to adequate food for an active and healthy life (Camp, 2015). Camp (2015)
goes on to suggest that food insecurity has been increasing since 1995 and that in 2011
approximately 15% of all households in America experience food insecurity. The USDA also
proposes that food deserts are areas, often located in low income communities, that do not have
access to healthy food options due to a lack of full service supermarkets (American Nutrition
Association, 2015). Food insecurity and food deserts are increasingly problematic for children
and minorities. A research study conducted in 2012 found that between 12% to 15% of Black
and Hispanic children elementary aged children experienced food insecurity (Xu, Zhu, &
Bresnahan, 2016). Camp (2015) cites that 25.1 % of Black households and 26.2% of Hispanic
households’ experience food insecurity. The US Department of Health and Human Services
(2014) states that approximately 30 million Americans live food deserts with a large percentage
being people of color.
Alabamians also face the complications of food insecurity and food deserts. The
Alabama Food Bank Association (2016) reports that 19.2% of Alabama’s population or almost 1
million people live with food insecurity. Furthermore, 1.8 million Alabamians live in areas
without full service supermarkets (Lang, Koprak, & Treering, 2015). In fact, almost every
county in Alabama has difficulty providing access to healthy food options (Lang, Koprak, &

Several studies have noted a possible relationship between obesity and food insecurity (Camp,

Cobb and Gwinnett Counties have the largest differences in homeownership rates between White and Black residents, while Fayette County has a much smaller gap. Mortgage data shows White homebuyers purchasing homes in majority Black areas of DeKalb County and central Fulton County.

Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune Disease
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.
