What is self disclosure
• The process of deliberately revealing significant information about oneself
that would not normally be Known by others.
Concept of self disclosure
• It must be deliberate
• It cannot be accidental
• Cannot be common information about yourself
• It has be significant information to you
Process of self disclosure
Self disclosure is a process of communication by which one person reveals
information about himself or herself to another. This information can include
thoughts, feelings, aspiration, goals, failure, success, fears and dreams as well as
one’s likes, dislikes and favorites.
Principles of self disclosure
• Self as the subject
• Intentional
• Directed at another person
• Honest
• Information unavailable from other sources
• Intimate nature comes from context
Social penetration theory
Social penetration theory posits that there are two dimensions to self
disclosure:
1. Breadth
2. Depth
Both are important in developing a fully intimate relationship.
Breath
The range of topics discussed by two individuals is the breadth of disclosure.
It is easier for breadth to be expand first in a relation-ship because of its more
accessible features. It consist of outer layer of personality and everyday lives
such as occupation and preferences.
Depth
The degree to which the information revealed is private or personal is the
depth of that disclosure.
Depth is more difficult to reach and includes painful memories and unsual
traits that we might hesitate to share with others. We reveals ourselves
thoroughly and discuss the widest range of topics with our spouses and loved
ones.
