Psychology of Interrogations
1) PSYCHOLOGY OF INTERROGATION
Interrogation– questioning a suspect or witness by law enforcement authorities. Once a person being
questioned is arrested, he/she is entitled to be informed of his/her legal rights, and in no case may
the interrogation violate rules of due process. * Interrogation may be considered as accusatory,
which differentiates it from interviewing. * Context of interrogation is always coercive. Although
police powers may be small, psychological powers are very great * Some interrogation tactics use
physical coercion, as evidenced in US with Afghanistan non–combatants e.g. water boarding. *
Generally, interrogation tactics are based on psychological techniques or deceptive tactics. These
techniques ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Suggest suspects should be interview prior to investigation so that trust can be established and rights
do not have to be informed.
Their model of effective interrogation– the Reid Technique 1) Direct Positive Confrontation * Tell
the suspect firmly of suspicion * Tell suspect that evidence (even if there isn't any) demonstrates
guilt * Watch for reaction– if none, an indication of guilt * Re–iterate accusation * All of these could
be problematic for those susceptible to suggestibility 2) Theme Development * Show development
and sympathy (establishing and maintaining rapport and building of trust) * Suggest themes to
minimise moral implications (e.g. understanding how the offender had to do what he did) *
Distinguish between physical commission and moral commission

crime (e.g. didn't mean to; was intoxicated; was an accident) d) Blame others– e.g. victims
(especially women victims), accomplices e) Use praise and flattery: useful on uneducated and

The Problem Of Climate Policy Essay
Dana: Everything is off the record, but if we ever wanted to quote you for any reason, you would
receive an email with a request and the actual quote in it. So, it is off the record, even though we are
recording.
Alex: Okay, that works.
Joe: So the recorder is now on. Just by way of introduction, can you guys give us a little about your
background with Nevada Climate and Energy Policy?
Alex: Before we jump in, can you give us a little bit more context of what the end goal of the project
is and what the big pitcher here is?
Dana: Sure, I can do that. Basically the idea is that we publish a number of people looking at climate
policy in the United States, particularly mapping out planet ploy network. One of the papers was
published in Nature Climate Change on what we call echo chambers and American Climate Policies
that Joe worked with me on. What we are planning on doing is updating that work, but also looking
at network at the State level around energy politics.
Particularly looking at clean energy networks there. The end goals will hopefully be some papers
that we submit for peer review, where all the information provided is off the record. If we wanted to
quote you, we would ask you for your permission, but then we are also going to be writing out some
white papers that will summarize the finding that will be made publicly available to people. A
general overview of what we are finding with regards to these networks. We would be happy to

Senator Harry Reid Is A Democratic Senator
In the United States Senate, many senators gather to discuss policies and whether to vote on laws
elected by the House of Representatives. The Senate provides each states with two votes; ergo there
are two Senators that represent each state. The duties include writing and passing laws, approving
many presidential appointments, and ratifying treaties with other countries. This allows each state to
have equal representation regardless of their population, which in turn grants each Senator with
great power and responsibility. A model Senator is one who accurately projects the views of his or
her state and tries their best to act on those views in the Senate. Such a senator can be found in
Nevada; Senator Harry Reid is a democratic Senate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's very clear that Harry Reid works very hard in order to position the values of Nevada in front of
him. So, in order to see whether or not Senator Reid has been correctly advocating for those in
Nevada, this paper will outline Harry Reid's stances on Immigration and Health Care Reform. These
two topics remain has some of the hottest and most popular contentions of debate; and its important
to know every political figures stance on these points.
People come to the United States for the promise of freedom and opportunity. But the current
immigration system in the United States is broken families are separated, immigrant workers are
exploited, people die trying to cross the border, and there is rampant discrimination against
immigrants. Senator Reid wants to change that. Senator Reid believes tin reuniting and keeping
families together. He has fought to eliminate the long backlogs that keep families apart while they
wait to reunite in a legal standard. This concept brought in the first issue of the Comprehensive
Immigration Reform Act of 2007. This was a bill that the sole sponsor was Senator Harry Reid, (and
supported by President George W. Bush at the time) a bill that would have provided a legal status
and a path to citizenship for the approximately 12 million illegal immigrants resident in the United
States. This comprehensive reform act would have done a lot for guest work and legalization
programs. Some of these reforms include increases in border patrol,

Using Reid Techniques In Policing
In policing there are many ways of interrogating a suspect. There is one method that is controversial
to use and that is called the Reid technique. Some people like this technique while others believe
that using this technique is wrong and un–just.
In my words, the Reid technique means using a series of questions which guilt the person into
confessing that your want. The actual definition defined by john e. Reid is an accusatory process in
which the investigator tells the suspect that there is no doubt as to his or her guilt. The interrogation
is in the form of a monologue presented by the investigator rather than a question and answer
format.
Unlike most interrogation techniques The Reid technique is further broken into 9 steps of interview.
These include direct positive confrontations, theme development, stopping details, overcoming
objections, getting the suspect's attention; the suspect quiets and listens, alternatives, bringing the
suspect into the conversation, and the confession. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second step, theme development, would include providing justification for the suspect to
commit a crime. The third step involves the suspect quitting denials which could indicate probable
guilt, followed by the fourth stop of overcoming objections. The fifth step of getting the suspect's
attention is a very important step. This involve physical closeness and the use of verbal techniques
to command attention. The sixth step is when the suspect quiets and listens, usually showing signs
of surrender. Step seven is alternatives followed by step eight of bringing the suspect into the
conversation. This step involves encouraging the suspect to freely talk about any aspect of the

Pros And Cons Of False Confessions
People know that false confessions are possible, however, most do not understand the severity. 66%
of people said that if a person signed a confession, they were most likely guilty (Henkel, Coffman,
& Dailey, 2008). Only 11% disagreed that a person might confess to a crime they did not commit.
Furthermore, only 42% of participants said that the police might lie about the police having
evidence. Henkel, Coffman, and Dailey report an overwhelming majority of the participants claimed
that they would never confess during an interrogation. What may lead to a false confession? One
major factor is not understanding Miranda rights. Adults may have some difficulty understanding
and appreciating their Miranda rights, but have a general idea of their rights. Conversely, juveniles
have a much more difficult time comprehending their rights. The current standard for competency is
a having a basic understanding of Miranda rights (Grisso et al., 2003). However, Viljoen, Zapf, and
Roesch (2007) found that 58% of defendants ages 11–13, 33.3% of defendants ages 14–15, and
7.8% of defendants ages 16–17 did not meet this standard. Moreover, if the defendant must also
appreciate the rights, 78% of defendants ages 11–13, 62.7% of defendants ages 14–15, and 35.3% of
defendants ages 16–17 did not meet these standards. Comprehension of Miranda rights is critical, as
one may falsely confess if they do not understand and utilize their rights. Age also changes how the
juvenile responds to the

A Case About A Female Jogger
Summary In the article, it first talks about a case about a female jogger who was raped,
horrendously beaten, and left abandoned in the park. The female jogger survived, but lost her
memory regarding the event. Police found five boys who were apparently being wild in the park.
They were convicted of the crime, even though there was no physical evidence of them committing
the crime. Four of the boys were videotaped for the interrogation. All of them confessed to
committing the crime in shocking detail and were sentenced to prison. Thirteen years later, a man
named Matias Reyes admitted that he was the one who raped and beat up the female jogger. The

Eyewitness psychologists play a vital role in identifying the mistakes of eyewitnesses and trying to
diminish the error. To continue, before a police investigator does a highly confrontational
interrogation, they have to do an evaluation of the suspect to determine if they are innocent or guilty.
They do that by performing an information–gathering interview. At times, determining if a suspect is
guilty or innocent, police investigators have interviews with witnesses, and informants. They also
get it from evidence. Additionally, it is sometimes from crime–related profiles about possible
culprits and their intentions. In addition, police investigators use the Reid technique. The Reid
technique involves using verbal cues, body language, and the person's behavioral attitudes to
determine if they are not telling the truth. Furthermore, the techniques the police investigators use
may not be 100% in determining deception in a person. For example, in the case of Tom Sawyer, he
was accused of murder and sexual assault. The police investigators interrogated him for 16 hours
and they got a confession out of him. The reason he was the main suspect in the case was because
his face was red and he seemed to be embarrassed while doing the interview, which were signs of
deception. Little did the investigators know Tom Sawyer was a recovering alcoholic who also had
social anxiety disorder. Which was the reason he was sweating uncontrollably and getting

the movement for the English Only movement in the state of Nevada. I have been made aware of
many states, more so than not, that have moved forward in passing the English Only bill; the last
state being West Virginia, which was the 32nd state to recognize English as the official language. I
feel it is important for the state of Nevada to continue to move forward with this movement and
continue to progress that many of our neighboring states have made. Since the early 1800's, our
nation has been trying to adopt English as a universal language among our citizens. Louisiana, in
1807, was the first state to begin this movement in its constitution as a condition to admittance to the
Union. After the Mexican–American War in 1848, there were several tens of thousands Spanish
speaking civilians that moved into our country, and this didn't include the other non–English
speaking people who lived among us. While we remain to be a free country, we are a people who

The Role Of Persuasion Within The Reid And Peace Model...
This paper examines the role of persuasion within the Reid and PEACE model techniques of
interrogation and how race and stereotype threats influence these interrogation styles. False
confession is also defined and discussed. A variety of race and cultures are included, focusing
primarily on African–American and Caucasian individuals. Police interrogation can be persuasive in
many ways and effects the potential suspect physiologically and psychologically. Considering the
discussed effects of police interrogation, the PEACE model technique seems to be the most
persuasive technique of police interrogation. The PEACE model technique is preferred more among
police and among the different studies.

campaigns. In the early part of my internship, I was learning the organizational structure of Battle
Born Progress as a public relations firm. As a non–profit organization, Battle Born Progress seeks to
strengthen the progressive community of Nevada through strategic communications and
mobilization techniques in order to provide a fair opportunity for everyone to succeed. Since other
organizations recognize the public relations value of Battle Born Progress, they will often times
compensate Battle Born Progress in exchange for running their social media accounts. As an

Police Interrogations And False Confessions
Police Interrogations and False Confessions
Introduction
Police interrogation is a technique that police have used to gather information from anyone involved
with a crime for hundreds of years. Police interrogations can last a few minutes to several hours. The
police have a right to continue questioning the suspect until they ask for a lawyer (Kassin, 2013).
The suspects' call for a lawyer is a right under the Miranda Rights. In the process of interrogation,
the police are not allowed to use cruel or any unusual methods to collect information, the law agents
are trained with techniques to get the suspects to answer all the questions. However, this is not
usually the case because sometimes the police go overboard in getting the suspects to answer their
questions. This interrogation in some cases has led to false confessions leading to the wrong
charging of the suspects. An approximate of one out of four confessions includes false confessions
(Redlich, 2009). The false confessions made by suspects beg the question on how the police
influence false confessions. This research will discuss the various techniques used by the police in
interrogating suspects and how they misuse the systems to influence false confessions.

Police And False Confessions Case Study
Police Tactics and False Confessions
In recent years, there have been multiple high–profile cases of people being exonerated, often by
DNA testing, after giving a false confession to a crime they did not commit. People who often fall
into this trap are juveniles or those with a diminished mental capacity (Redlich, 2009). DNA testing
has helped many innocent people that gave false confessions be free again. This trend brings up the
question of how were they able to give a false confession.
Using the example of the case of Damon Thibodaux, he was taken for questioning after a girl who
they were last seen with went missing. She was found strangled and naked (Leo, 2008). A homicide
officer took over the case, and Thibodaux was interrogated for several hours. Although Thibodaux
repeatedly said he knew nothing about the murder, the interrogation kept going, eventually the
officer was able to record a statement from Thibodaux pleading guilty of consensual and non–
consensual sex with the victim, beating, and assassinating her. Thibodaux was condemned to death,
and was to spend fifteen years on death row and sixteen years in jail before DNA examination
confirmed that he was not guilty (Kassin, 2013). Thibodauxs exoneration proceeding concluded that
fatigue and exhaustion from the overnight search for the girl, the long interrogation, psychological
vulnerability, and fear of the death penalty led to the false confession by Thibodaux (Leo, 2008).
This case is a great example of

Techniques of Interrogation
Techniques of Interrogation
One of the best training programs to implement into the police department is the Reid interrogation
techniques. Interrogation and interviewing techniques became popular in 1947 by John E. Reid and
Associates. Joseph P. Buckley stated that "The Reid Technique of Interviewing and Interrogation is
now the most widely used approach to question subjects in the world (Buckley P. J., 2000)." There
three– parts to the Reid process for solving a crime. The first stage that should be taking is to collect
and analyze relative information from the crime scene thing that offers insight to the possible
suspect and determine the direction an investigation should take. The second stage of the process
interviewing people of interest using Behavior Analysis Interview (BAI) (Buckley P. J., 2000). The
Behavior Analysis Interview is a non–accusatory process that allows detectives to interview a
suspect using a question and answer procedure to provoke a suspect to show non– verbal
truthfulness or deception. The third stage, if the offender has not admitted to the crime an accusatory
interrogation is administered (Leave no marks, 2007). The Reid interrogation technique is believed
to be a fail proof technique ,however, there are some reservations against using this technique on
juvenile offenders (Constitutional Law(n.d). Implementing the Reid technique into the police
departments learning curriculum will truly

Using this method build an unjust case which severed the reputation, traumatized and imprisoned an
innocent man for two years and eight months. After having been through two trials, Morgan is

(Q 2&3) Ethical Issues and Psychological Aspects in Morgan's Case: As the video evidently shows,
the overall case was fabricated with the use of psychological tactics that broke some fundamental
aspects of ethics. Getting one to confess to a crime is never easy, hence borne the numerous methods
introduced and followed by almost all law enforcement officers to "read" possible suspects during
interrogations. Further, with the right assembly of personal/background information, the
combination of circumstances/techniques, and psychological manipulation can even make the most
hardened suspect to confess ("How Police Interrogation works"). To add on, there was a time when
"physical abuse" toward the possible suspects during interrogations and the confession obtained
thereafter was accepted in court ("How Police Interrogation works"); Not only is this a misuse of
authoritative power, but also unethical–inflicting mental /or physical pain upon the individual to
confess almost seems extreme.
Similarly, in this case, lying/subduing

Turned Polygraph Expert: The John E. Reid Model
The Reid model is an investigative technique developed in the late nineteen–forties by cop, turned
polygraph expert, John E. Reid. Used by renowned agencies such as CSIS, the FBI and the CIA, the
Reid Model is preferred by military, law enforcement and security forces alike. The technique
consists of two pseudo–neutral stages of information gathering, followed by an accusatory
interrogation stage. (Reid) The first two information gathering stages, Factual Analysis and the
Behaviour Interview, are both preliminary assessments for gathering information and evaluations of
suspects and witnesses alike. Factual Analysis is a qualitative and quantitative examination of
individual suspects in respect to the particulars and details of the offence, including biosocial ...

After the first step, the interrogator is to establish what's known as a theme, or justification for the
offence. Most themes are based on morality or deflection thereof. These themes are to be given in a
sympathetic and understanding tone. Interrogators are encouraged to limit the suspects talking if
any, suggesting a correlation between frequency of denial and persistency to innocence. At this point
in the interrogation, the Model states anything that varies from "normal" behaviour infers guilt.
Once the suspect is in a defeated position, head slumped and quiet or crying, the interrogator now
poses an alternative question. An alternative question is one with two options, one being more
morally appealing to the suspect than the other. The suspect is expected to pick the more acceptable
of the two and confess. Confessions are to be written or recorded with a witness present and signed
by the suspect and interrogators involved. The Reid model boasts about its effectivity and conviction

Natural Law And The Preservation Of Human Life
Natural law and the Preservation of Human Life
Donald J. Moore
Webster University
September 18, 2016
Natural Law and the Preservation of Human Life In order to address the scenarios in this
assignment, one must define the when life begins. According to Thomas Aquinas God created the
universe and all plants, animals and life of all types under the doctrine of External Law. Based on
his vision, God instilled Natural Law in law to fulfill the parameters of External Law. Self–
preservation is not only a function of protecting one's self being, but also by ensuring the species
survives. This is accomplished through the second inclination of procreation. Aquinas' teachings
proclaim that God created the universe and by doing so, created all life. So logic must dictate that
life begins at conception and that the developing fetus has already been instilled with Natural Law.
A young woman who is four months pregnant has recently discovered that she has tuberculosis. The
doctor informs her that she must take a drug that will cure her disease, but that the drug will also
have the effect of aborting the fetus. There is no other available drug that will cure her disease, and
if she does not take the drug immediately she will die. According to natural law, may the young
woman take the drug? Both the mother and the fetus are innocent human lives. Even though the
fetus may not be capable of understanding, it is still a life and is dependent upon the mother for life.
However, the fetus

Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act
H.R. 3590 (111th): Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
When president Obama was a candidate in the 2008 election he promised wide scale health care
reform that would increase the availability and affordability of medical insurance for a large portion
of the American population. At the time of his campaign, millions of low–income Americans were
stuck in the Medicaid gap – where they could not afford health insurance, but also were not eligible
for the joint state and federal government Medicaid program. This promise eventually became the
bill later named the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that was passed by the senate on
December 24, 2010. The bill's policy seeks to expand health care coverage to low–income families

Of those people many were considered below the poverty threshold, however due to strict state
regulations these individuals or families did not qualify for insurance through Medicaid. As a result,
when these Americans needed to be seen by doctors, insured tax paying American's would be stuck
with their bills. In order to alleviate this problem, president Obama decided to lead a major
campaign to increase the affordability of health care. Through draft bills in the house and senate, the
Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obama Care, covers a large portion of Americans
who before it became a law would be left without insurance. The bill has two main parts – making
healthcare affordable to low income families and increasing the scope of Medicaid eligibility.
Before ObamaCare, families and individuals who were not covered by employers for healthcare had
to seek out insurance on their own. This task proved very difficult as insurance providers charged
steep prices for coverage. In short, health care coverage was not affordable to a large portion of the
population. The law seeks to cover Americans who are between 138% and 400% of the Federal
Poverty Level. They can sign up for Health Care via a government run website, which will allow
them to choose a plan that best suits their needs. A formula will then decide based on their state how
much a plan will cost for them as well as how much of their health care is

Wendell Ford Informational Piece Wendell Ford was born on September 8, 1924 in Daviess County,
Kentucky, and, after graduating from Daviess County High School in 1942, attended the University
of Kentucky. Two years later, Ford enlisted in the army and served for two years before his
honorable discharge in the summer of 1946 and continued to serve in the National Guard until 1962

Kentucky's 49th governor (Cross). As governor, Wendell Ford created a budget surplus by passing a
severance tax on coal, a two–cent–per–gallon tax on gasoline, and an increase in the corporate tax

Race and The NFL Quarterback Essay examples
Black, White or whatever people want to call other people it doesn't matter because as Brown, T.
says "There's No Race on the Playing Field" At the elite level of sports the ability of the person
playing no matter the sport or the position is what is in question day to day and game to game.
However, ability to play the position and being athletic and playing the position are not to be
confused. The ability to play a position will allow a player to play a sport for as long as the athlete
can play and feel capable of playing or is thought by the powers in control feel they can. Conversely
playing a position because an athlete is athletic will only allow the player to play until his actual
physical athletic ability starts to decline. There is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The TV industry has changed a great deal. The sport programming and the overall coverage of
games has truly set a new standard for everyone who plays and loves sports. The cameras now are
showing HD images even. The direction of professional sports has been dramatically effected by
broadcast media. Howeve, their interpretations, creation of drama and their ability to establish
certain ideas for other people about what happens in sports can not be denied. (Brown, S.P) Such
was the case for Donovan McNabb and Redskins coach Mike Shanahan after Shanahan pulled
McNabb off the field and replaced him with a white Quarterback in the final two minutes of a game
against the Detroit Lions.
As the coach, Shanahan is expected to make decisions and do what needs to be done in order to win
games. Decisions such as when to pull a player off the field and replace him with someone else
definitely fall into this category. As a starting quarterback McNabb is suppose to be capable of doing
what needs to be done in order to win games such things would include being in shape, knowing the
teams plays and being capable to execute plays that you are given. This may also include wearing an
arm band with plays listed on them so if you have questions of which plays are called you can check
them for accuracy. McNabb had been brought to the Redskins so they would have a chance as a
winning team.

The Reid Technique For Interrogation
The Reid technique
One of the most famous technique for interrogation is the Reid technique. According to the
company' website, over 500,000 law enforcement and security professionals have attended the
company's interview and interrogation training programs since they were first offered in 1974. This
technique is based of nine steps:
The first step is the positive confrontation; the officer will present the fact from the case to the
person being interrogated. The officer will say that the person might be considered as a suspect
because there are proofs than connect him to the ongoing investigation.
The second step is the development of the theme, during the interrogation the interrogator will ask
why the suspect has committed the crime ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this point the suspect should be on the breach of being defeated in his lies. This can be seen by
nonverbal behaviors such as long silent moments or putting elbow on the knees and posing his head
on his hands. This is the point in the interrogation when the suspect begins to confess and thus the
police officer has to keep a good contact with him.
The seventh step is about presenting an alternative, which means that the interrogator will present
another reason for why the suspect committed the crime.
The eighth step is called "having the suspect orally relate various details of the offense", which
means that after the suspect accepted the fact that he is guilty, the officer should try to know more
about the crime and ask for details.
The ninth step is Converting an oral confession to a written confession. This is the final step where
the suspect will write his guilt.
The Reid technics is good when people are the real suspect and interrogator just need to have the
oral and the written consent of the crime. However, this technic can be very aggressive and
misleading when the person interrogated is just a witness. In fact, Gregg McCrary, a retired F.B.I.
agent, said that Reid technique has a tendency to see lies where they sometimes may not exist.
"They just assume they're interviewing the guilty guy."

quickly removed and replaced with a much more accurate vision of him that will be explained in
greater detail throughout this review. Eventually Augusten's parents divorce and entire life begins to
take a completely different path. His mother begins to second guess her sexuality and sends
Augusten to live with the Finch family so that she may set her life to the way that she wishes it to
be. Augusten is introduced to an entirely new way of living life. Dr. Finch believes that at age 13 a
person is an adult and cannot be told what to do anymore. As a result, there are many odd
occurrences in the Finch household, such as Augusten and the youngest Finch daughter, Natalie
removing the roof of the kitchen to build a skylight. Augusten's mother Deidre does not seem to be
helpful at all when it comes to helping her son through his rather unorthodox childhood. She is
rather self–absorbed and is mentally unstable, which is not a good combination to rearing a child
successfully. She also has to grapple with her own hectic life, which includes such things as having
an affair with a local minister's wife, or having a yearly breakdown every spring. One of the major
points of the story including Augusten's mother is hear relationship with Dorothy. Dorothy is a
wealthy African–American woman who

Wrongful Conviction Essay
Nothing is flawless, and this is especially true of governments, which are simply collections of
flawed individuals attempting to serve, or in some cases control, a larger group of flawed
individuals. Despite this, a large portion of the population accepts the government's procedures and
regulations without a second thought. Dr. Brian Farrell's lecture titled "Wrongful Convictions," an
article about false confessions by Douglas Starr titled "The Interview," and even the events
surrounding Prohibition are just some examples of a government that may provide order, but is far
from perfect. RULES AND PROCEDURES ARE NOT ALWAYS BENEFICIAL AND CAN EVEN
LEAD TO UNDESIRABLE CONSEQUENCES. The government of the United States in particular
is bound to make mistakes as regular citizens have a large amount of influence in policy making

While many supported the idea of Prohibition, it caused a great deal of consequences that can still
be seen to this day. "In 1920 could anyone have believed that the Eighteenth Amendment, ostensibly
addressing the single subject of intoxicating beverages, would set off an avalanche of change in
areas as diverse as international trade, speedboat design, tourism practices, soft–drink marketing,
and the English language itself? Or that it would provoke the establishment of the first nationwide
criminal syndicate, the idea of home dinner parties, the deep engagement of women in political
issues other than suffrage, and the creation of Las Vegas" (Okrent 3)? While Prohibition had many
positive consequences, the negative consequences were overlooked and many suffered because of
the government's decision to restrict the consumption of alcohol. There is no doubt that Prohibition,
a product of an imperfect government, was far from perfect and led to undesired

The PEACE and Cognitive Interviewing Models vs. the Reid...
Many of today's interrogation models being utilized in police investigations have an impact on false
confessions. The model that has been in the public eye recently is the social psychological process
model of interrogation known as the "The Reid Technique." There are two alternatives used by the
police today to replace the Reid Technique, one is the PEACE Model and the other is Cognitive
Interviewing. These methods are not interrogation techniques like Reid but interview processes.
The Reid Technique is an interrogation process that consists of two parts, the interview and a nine–
step interrogation. The interview, which is non–accusatory in nature, gives the interviewer a chance
to gather information related to the case. The interview ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is known as a "passive mood". (Jayne & Buckley, 2004) Throughout this stage the suspect is on
the defensive and may withdraw and focus their thoughts on punishments. (Buckley, 2000)
The passive mood reached in step six is where the investigator may recognize that the suspect has "
given up" and is ready to confess. (Associates J. E., 2014) The suspect will appear less tense,
defeated and may even begin to cry. The investigators response to this passive mood is where stage
six begins by condensing their themes down to just one or two, and head into the next and last stage.
The investigator will remain in close proximity and start introducing the alternate questions.
(Buckley, 2000)
Presenting an alternate form of questions to the suspect is the seventh step. The investigator will ask
a question with a positive and negative choice. Both choices usually result in the suspect admitting
some sort of guilt. An innocent suspect will listen to both choices and reject both of them. The
alternative should be followed up with a statement of support in which the interrogator tells the
suspect that they think it was done for a good reason. (Buckley, 2000)
Corroboration of the admission of guilt is stage eight of this technique. This is obtained by
collecting details of the offense from the suspect by using open–ended questions. The interrogator
moves from the persuasion phase of questioning to a simpler

interrogations and the destructive aftermaths that follows. The entire story revolves around one man
named Adrian Thomas accused of murdering his four–month year old baby. The documentary shows
how the police failed determine to correct cause of death, and witch hunt by police the ensued after.
The police used a number of inapposite techniques to pressure Adrian to confess to murder. The
police should have recognized Adrian was showing a number of personal risk factors that if properly
identified by authorities could have avoided this miscarriage of justice. These personal factors
include his inexperience of the judicial system, extreme stress and shock, and a lack of sleep and
food. The police should have identified a number of situational risk factors that lead to his
confession. Such factors like, conformation biases and use of the Reid technique. Before the police
started pressing Adrian for answers they should have recognized a number of factors already
effecting Adrian before the interview. Such as the psychological state Adrian was in when the
interview started. He was in a state of shock and extremely emotional, which the police saw as him
being deceptive. Not only does that make the police more suspicious, but also Reid trained officer

The interrogator must also exercise caution, if they provide facts that turn out to be false, they can

The purpose of this is to provide detectives with nonverbal behaviors, that are designed to see the

Wrongful Convictions : The Reid Technique
Wrongful Convictions – The Reid Technique
When questioning witnesses of a crime, detectives may choose a specific technique; one technique
is the Reid Technique. The Reid Technique is a multi–step questioning method that pressures the
witnesses or the accused to admit to the crime. It is used in North America. According to Professor
Brent Snook, a psychologist at the Memorial University in Newfoundland, the Reid Technique is
"Starsky and Hutch", where two hot head detectives "beat up" their suspects to encourage them
confess (http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/11/25/youre–guilty–now–confess–false–admissions–
put–polices–favourite–interrogation–tactic–under–scrutiny/). This paper will examine the steps of
the Reid Technique, as well as reveal substantial evidence that this technique should be banned. This
technique has led to false confessions. Not only does this mean that someone has been punished that
isn't guilty, but it also means the real criminal has not been found and punished. The arguments
against the use of this technique are the following:
a) This technique violates section 11(d) Charter of Rights and Freedom. The accused is not truly
presumed innocent until proven guilty. (http://publications.gc.ca/collections/Collection/CH37–4–3–
2002E.pdf)
b) This method of questioning is coersive and manipulative.
c) This technique is dishonest as investigators may lie about evidence.
Before providing reasons to abolish the Reid Technique, it is essential to understand

Criminal Investigators and Interrogations-Interviews
To find the truth in any interview/interrogation it takes a skilled and qualified investigator. Criminal
Investigators continue to learn every day. They find new techniques to approach an
interview/interrogation, they learn new ways to talk to people, and the success of their
interviews/interrogations depends on their ability to take what they learn and apply it. In order to
develop great interview and interrogation skills, one must be able to communicate well verbally and
non–verbally, be able to read body language, and know the facts of their case to be able to ask the
right questions. To be a successful Criminal Investigator, one needs to have great
interrogation/interview skills.
During interviews/interrogations a Criminal Investigator needs to listen and observe. Listening to
verbal behavior helps the investigator determine whether or not the individual is speaking the truth
or lying. When an investigator asks questions, it is crucial for them to watch how the individual
reacts to those questions. According to John Reid Associates, there are cues to look for and listen for
when conducting an interrogation/interview. Some cues are clearing of the throat, deep
breathing/sighing, and nervous laughing.
During interviews/interrogations, Criminal Investigators need to be able to read body language.
Body language is a key factor in determining if an individual is lying. When an individual is lying
they show signs indicating the question that was asked sparked an

Here are a few potential stereotypes portrayed in the show Scrubs:- Nerdy/awkward white male doctor (J.D.): As the main character, J.D. is often portrayed as nerdy, awkward, and insecure in his abilities as a doctor. This could perpetuate stereotypes of white males in the medical field. - "Meathead" jock black male doctor (Turk): Turk's character is often focused on his athletic abilities and love of sports, playing into stereotypes of black males being athletic rather than intellectual. - Emotional/overly sensitive white female doctor (Elliot): Elliot struggles with feeling like she has to prove herself in the male-dominated

  • 1. Psychology of Interrogations 1) PSYCHOLOGY OF INTERROGATION Interrogation– questioning a suspect or witness by law enforcement authorities. Once a person being questioned is arrested, he/she is entitled to be informed of his/her legal rights, and in no case may the interrogation violate rules of due process. * Interrogation may be considered as accusatory, which differentiates it from interviewing. * Context of interrogation is always coercive. Although police powers may be small, psychological powers are very great * Some interrogation tactics use physical coercion, as evidenced in US with Afghanistan non–combatants e.g. water boarding. * Generally, interrogation tactics are based on psychological techniques or deceptive tactics. These techniques ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Suggest suspects should be interview prior to investigation so that trust can be established and rights do not have to be informed. • 5. The Problem Of Climate Policy Essay Dana: Everything is off the record, but if we ever wanted to quote you for any reason, you would receive an email with a request and the actual quote in it. So, it is off the record, even though we are recording. Alex: Okay, that works. Joe: So the recorder is now on. Just by way of introduction, can you guys give us a little about your background with Nevada Climate and Energy Policy? Alex: Before we jump in, can you give us a little bit more context of what the end goal of the project is and what the big pitcher here is? Dana: Sure, I can do that. Basically the idea is that we publish a number of people looking at climate policy in the United States, particularly mapping out planet ploy network. One of the papers was published in Nature Climate Change on what we call echo chambers and American Climate Policies that Joe worked with me on. What we are planning on doing is updating that work, but also looking at network at the State level around energy politics. Particularly looking at clean energy networks there. The end goals will hopefully be some papers that we submit for peer review, where all the information provided is off the record. If we wanted to quote you, we would ask you for your permission, but then we are also going to be writing out some white papers that will summarize the finding that will be made publicly available to people. A general overview of what we are finding with regards to these networks. We would be happy to share and we will post it on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Senator Harry Reid Is A Democratic Senator In the United States Senate, many senators gather to discuss policies and whether to vote on laws elected by the House of Representatives. The Senate provides each states with two votes; ergo there are two Senators that represent each state. The duties include writing and passing laws, approving many presidential appointments, and ratifying treaties with other countries. This allows each state to have equal representation regardless of their population, which in turn grants each Senator with great power and responsibility. A model Senator is one who accurately projects the views of his or her state and tries their best to act on those views in the Senate. Such a senator can be found in Nevada; Senator Harry Reid is a democratic Senate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's very clear that Harry Reid works very hard in order to position the values of Nevada in front of him. So, in order to see whether or not Senator Reid has been correctly advocating for those in Nevada, this paper will outline Harry Reid's stances on Immigration and Health Care Reform. These two topics remain has some of the hottest and most popular contentions of debate; and its important to know every political figures stance on these points. People come to the United States for the promise of freedom and opportunity. But the current immigration system in the United States is broken families are separated, immigrant workers are exploited, people die trying to cross the border, and there is rampant discrimination against immigrants. Senator Reid wants to change that. Senator Reid believes tin reuniting and keeping families together. He has fought to eliminate the long backlogs that keep families apart while they wait to reunite in a legal standard. This concept brought in the first issue of the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007. This was a bill that the sole sponsor was Senator Harry Reid, (and supported by President George W. Bush at the time) a bill that would have provided a legal status and a path to citizenship for the approximately 12 million illegal immigrants resident in the United States. This comprehensive reform act would have done a lot for guest work and legalization programs. Some of these reforms include increases in border patrol, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Using Reid Techniques In Policing In policing there are many ways of interrogating a suspect. There is one method that is controversial to use and that is called the Reid technique. Some people like this technique while others believe that using this technique is wrong and un–just. In my words, the Reid technique means using a series of questions which guilt the person into confessing that your want. The actual definition defined by john e. Reid is an accusatory process in which the investigator tells the suspect that there is no doubt as to his or her guilt. The interrogation is in the form of a monologue presented by the investigator rather than a question and answer format. Unlike most interrogation techniques The Reid technique is further broken into 9 steps of interview. These include direct positive confrontations, theme development, stopping details, overcoming objections, getting the suspect's attention; the suspect quiets and listens, alternatives, bringing the suspect into the conversation, and the confession. ... The third step involves the suspect quitting denials which could indicate probable guilt, followed by the fourth stop of overcoming objections. The fifth step of getting the suspect's attention is a very important step. This involve physical closeness and the use of verbal techniques to command attention. The sixth step is when the suspect quiets and listens, usually showing signs of surrender. Step seven is alternatives followed by step eight of bringing the suspect into the conversation. • 17. Pros And Cons Of False Confessions People know that false confessions are possible, however, most do not understand the severity. 66% of people said that if a person signed a confession, they were most likely guilty (Henkel, Coffman, & Dailey, 2008). Only 11% disagreed that a person might confess to a crime they did not commit. Furthermore, only 42% of participants said that the police might lie about the police having evidence. Henkel, Coffman, and Dailey report an overwhelming majority of the participants claimed that they would never confess during an interrogation. What may lead to a false confession? One major factor is not understanding Miranda rights. Adults may have some difficulty understanding and appreciating their Miranda rights, but have a general idea of their rights. Conversely, juveniles have a much more difficult time comprehending their rights. The current standard for competency is a having a basic understanding of Miranda rights (Grisso et al., 2003). However, Viljoen, Zapf, and Roesch (2007) found that 58% of defendants ages 11–13, 33.3% of defendants ages 14–15, and 7.8% of defendants ages 16–17 did not meet this standard. Moreover, if the defendant must also appreciate the rights, 78% of defendants ages 11–13, 62.7% of defendants ages 14–15, and 35.3% of defendants ages 16–17 did not meet these standards. Comprehension of Miranda rights is critical, as one may falsely confess if they do not understand and utilize their rights. Age also changes how the juvenile responds to the ... Besides, I'm not keen on sugarcoating all the nasty comments, as I do not wish for my children to get in the habit of whitewashing inconvenient truths. "What comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles," says Jesus (Matt. 5:18). Words matter; words from bigwigs matter big time. His pre–election hate speech, "a mere tool," has already provoked a string of deplorable incidents that would get white supremacists to give each other a fist bump. While I am aghast, I am not surprised. Knowing who is sitting on the throne, many closet bigots will feel emboldened to intimidate or hurt anyone that might not look, act, or talk like an American. The female jogger survived, but lost her memory regarding the event. Police found five boys who were apparently being wild in the park. They were convicted of the crime, even though there was no physical evidence of them committing the crime. Four of the boys were videotaped for the interrogation. All of them confessed to committing the crime in shocking detail and were sentenced to prison. Thirteen years later, a man named Matias Reyes admitted that he was the one who raped and beat up the female jogger. The case was reopened and DNA testing proved that the semen samples on the victim were his. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eyewitness psychologists play a vital role in identifying the mistakes of eyewitnesses and trying to diminish the error. To continue, before a police investigator does a highly confrontational interrogation, they have to do an evaluation of the suspect to determine if they are innocent or guilty. They do that by performing an information–gathering interview. At times, determining if a suspect is guilty or innocent, police investigators have interviews with witnesses, and informants. They also get it from evidence. Additionally, it is sometimes from crime–related profiles about possible culprits and their intentions. In addition, police investigators use the Reid technique. The Reid technique involves using verbal cues, body language, and the person's behavioral attitudes to determine if they are not telling the truth. Furthermore, the techniques the police investigators use may not be 100% in determining deception in a person. For example, in the case of Tom Sawyer, he was accused of murder and sexual assault. The police investigators interrogated him for 16 hours and they got a confession out of him. The reason he was the main suspect in the case was because his face was red and he seemed to be embarrassed while doing the interview, which were signs of deception. Little did the investigators know Tom Sawyer was a recovering alcoholic who also had social anxiety disorder. Which was the reason he was sweating uncontrollably and getting ... Society has made it so hard for blacks to become successful, but for the great minds of the students at CAU; it's so easy for them to succeed and not for them to fall into what society calls the "system". Although there are no excuses to be made for the African American communities, this reasoning's will leave some people to think they will never be good enough for society. English Only Movement Senator Harry Reid 333 S Las Vegas Blvd Suite 8016 Las Vegas, Nv 89101 To Whom It May Concern, My name is Keegan Drawe and I have been educating myself regarding the movement for the English Only movement in the state of Nevada. I have been made aware of many states, more so than not, that have moved forward in passing the English Only bill; the last state being West Virginia, which was the 32nd state to recognize English as the official language. I feel it is important for the state of Nevada to continue to move forward with this movement and continue to progress that many of our neighboring states have made. Since the early 1800's, our nation has been trying to adopt English as a universal language among our citizens. Louisiana, in 1807, was the first state to begin this movement in its constitution as a condition to admittance to the Union. After the Mexican–American War in 1848, there were several tens of thousands Spanish speaking civilians that moved into our country, and this didn't include the other non–English speaking people who lived among us. • 45. The Role Of Persuasion Within The Reid And Peace Model... This paper examines the role of persuasion within the Reid and PEACE model techniques of interrogation and how race and stereotype threats influence these interrogation styles. False confession is also defined and discussed. A variety of race and cultures are included, focusing primarily on African–American and Caucasian individuals. Police interrogation can be persuasive in many ways and effects the potential suspect physiologically and psychologically. Considering the discussed effects of police interrogation, the PEACE model technique seems to be the most persuasive technique of police interrogation. The PEACE model technique is preferred more among police and among the different studies. The EFFECT OF PERSUASION 3 The Effect of Persuasion in Police Interrogation and False Confession In January 1988 Michael Crow, a caucasian boy who is fourteen years old, confessed to murdering his older sister in their childhood home. Crow was interrogated for ten hours when he eventually admitted to a crime he did not commit. Through his interrogation, Crow showed signs of distress. When Crow would say that he had a feeling he killed his sister the interrogator went along with what Crow said and tried to get an even greater confession out of him by being coercive and confrontational. As the interrogation progressed Crow's level of distress became greater. Crow was going back and forth between whether he murdered his sister or not. At ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My Internship With Battle Born Progress Administrative Intern: My Internship with Battle Born Progress As an administrative intern for Battle Born Progress, I've developed a plethora of professional skills that have facilitated my understanding on how the political process works, particularly with campaigns. In the early part of my internship, I was learning the organizational structure of Battle Born Progress as a public relations firm. As a non–profit organization, Battle Born Progress seeks to strengthen the progressive community of Nevada through strategic communications and mobilization techniques in order to provide a fair opportunity for everyone to succeed. Since other organizations recognize the public relations value of Battle Born Progress, they will often times compensate Battle Born Progress in exchange for running their social media accounts. As an administrative intern, I was primary in charge of running social media for Battle Born Progress and its partners. Although the first couple of weeks were challenging, I became confident in my ability to effectively communicate the appropriate message to each of our partner's social media accounts. Furthermore, since this was an election year, I was taught a combination of administrative and campaign skills. This paper will be examining the chronological order of my internship at Battle Born Progress from August of 2016 to December of 2016. • 53. Police Interrogations And False Confessions Police Interrogations and False Confessions Introduction Police interrogation is a technique that police have used to gather information from anyone involved with a crime for hundreds of years. Police interrogations can last a few minutes to several hours. The police have a right to continue questioning the suspect until they ask for a lawyer (Kassin, 2013). The suspects' call for a lawyer is a right under the Miranda Rights. In the process of interrogation, the police are not allowed to use cruel or any unusual methods to collect information, the law agents are trained with techniques to get the suspects to answer all the questions. However, this is not usually the case because sometimes the police go overboard in getting the suspects to answer their questions. This interrogation in some cases has led to false confessions leading to the wrong charging of the suspects. An approximate of one out of four confessions includes false confessions (Redlich, 2009). The false confessions made by suspects beg the question on how the police influence false confessions. This research will discuss the various techniques used by the police in interrogating suspects and how they misuse the systems to influence false confessions. • 57. Police And False Confessions Case Study Police Tactics and False Confessions In recent years, there have been multiple high–profile cases of people being exonerated, often by DNA testing, after giving a false confession to a crime they did not commit. People who often fall into this trap are juveniles or those with a diminished mental capacity (Redlich, 2009). DNA testing has helped many innocent people that gave false confessions be free again. This trend brings up the question of how were they able to give a false confession. Using the example of the case of Damon Thibodaux, he was taken for questioning after a girl who they were last seen with went missing. She was found strangled and naked (Leo, 2008). A homicide officer took over the case, and Thibodaux was interrogated for several hours. Although Thibodaux repeatedly said he knew nothing about the murder, the interrogation kept going, eventually the officer was able to record a statement from Thibodaux pleading guilty of consensual and non– consensual sex with the victim, beating, and assassinating her. Thibodaux was condemned to death, and was to spend fifteen years on death row and sixteen years in jail before DNA examination confirmed that he was not guilty (Kassin, 2013). Thibodauxs exoneration proceeding concluded that fatigue and exhaustion from the overnight search for the girl, the long interrogation, psychological vulnerability, and fear of the death penalty led to the false confession by Thibodaux (Leo, 2008). This case is a great example of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Techniques of Interrogation Techniques of Interrogation One of the best training programs to implement into the police department is the Reid interrogation techniques. Interrogation and interviewing techniques became popular in 1947 by John E. Reid and Associates. Joseph P. Buckley stated that "The Reid Technique of Interviewing and Interrogation is now the most widely used approach to question subjects in the world (Buckley P. J., 2000)." There three– parts to the Reid process for solving a crime. The first stage that should be taking is to collect and analyze relative information from the crime scene thing that offers insight to the possible suspect and determine the direction an investigation should take. The second stage of the process interviewing people of interest using Behavior Analysis Interview (BAI) (Buckley P. J., 2000). The Behavior Analysis Interview is a non–accusatory process that allows detectives to interview a suspect using a question and answer procedure to provoke a suspect to show non– verbal truthfulness or deception. The third stage, if the offender has not admitted to the crime an accusatory interrogation is administered (Leave no marks, 2007). The Reid interrogation technique is believed to be a fail proof technique ,however, there are some reservations against using this technique on juvenile offenders (Constitutional Law(n.d). Getting one to confess to a crime is never easy, hence borne the numerous methods introduced and followed by almost all law enforcement officers to "read" possible suspects during interrogations. Further, with the right assembly of personal/background information, the combination of circumstances/techniques, and psychological manipulation can even make the most hardened suspect to confess ("How Police Interrogation works"). To add on, there was a time when "physical abuse" toward the possible suspects during interrogations and the confession obtained thereafter was accepted in court ("How Police Interrogation works"); Not only is this a misuse of authoritative power, but also unethical–inflicting mental /or physical pain upon the individual to confess almost seems extreme. Used by renowned agencies such as CSIS, the FBI and the CIA, the Reid Model is preferred by military, law enforcement and security forces alike. The technique consists of two pseudo–neutral stages of information gathering, followed by an accusatory interrogation stage. At this point in the interrogation, the Model states anything that varies from "normal" behaviour infers guilt. Once the suspect is in a defeated position, head slumped and quiet or crying, the interrogator now poses an alternative question. • 77. Natural Law And The Preservation Of Human Life Natural law and the Preservation of Human Life Donald J. Moore Webster University September 18, 2016 Natural Law and the Preservation of Human Life In order to address the scenarios in this assignment, one must define the when life begins. According to Thomas Aquinas God created the universe and all plants, animals and life of all types under the doctrine of External Law. Based on his vision, God instilled Natural Law in law to fulfill the parameters of External Law. Self– preservation is not only a function of protecting one's self being, but also by ensuring the species survives. This is accomplished through the second inclination of procreation. Aquinas' teachings proclaim that God created the universe and by doing so, created all life. So logic must dictate that life begins at conception and that the developing fetus has already been instilled with Natural Law. A young woman who is four months pregnant has recently discovered that she has tuberculosis. The doctor informs her that she must take a drug that will cure her disease, but that the drug will also have the effect of aborting the fetus. There is no other available drug that will cure her disease, and if she does not take the drug immediately she will die. According to natural law, may the young woman take the drug? Both the mother and the fetus are innocent human lives. Even though the fetus may not be capable of understanding, it is still a life and is dependent upon the mother for life. However, the fetus ... At the time of his campaign, millions of low–income Americans were stuck in the Medicaid gap – where they could not afford health insurance, but also were not eligible for the joint state and federal government Medicaid program. As a result, when these Americans needed to be seen by doctors, insured tax paying American's would be stuck with their bills. In order to alleviate this problem, president Obama decided to lead a major campaign to increase the affordability of health care. Through draft bills in the house and senate, the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obama Care, covers a large portion of Americans who before it became a law would be left without insurance. The bill has two main parts – making healthcare affordable to low income families and increasing the scope of Medicaid eligibility. Before ObamaCare, families and individuals who were not covered by employers for healthcare had to seek out insurance on their own. This task proved very difficult as insurance providers charged steep prices for coverage. In short, health care coverage was not affordable to a large portion of the population. According to the company' website, over 500,000 law enforcement and security professionals have attended the company's interview and interrogation training programs since they were first offered in 1974. This technique is based of nine steps: The first step is the positive confrontation; the officer will present the fact from the case to the person being interrogated. The officer will say that the person might be considered as a suspect because there are proofs than connect him to the ongoing investigation. The second step is the development of the theme, during the interrogation the interrogator will ask why the suspect has committed the crime ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this point the suspect should be on the breach of being defeated in his lies. This can be seen by nonverbal behaviors such as long silent moments or putting elbow on the knees and posing his head on his hands. This is the point in the interrogation when the suspect begins to confess and thus the police officer has to keep a good contact with him. The seventh step is about presenting an alternative, which means that the interrogator will present another reason for why the suspect committed the crime. The eighth step is called "having the suspect orally relate various details of the offense", which means that after the suspect accepted the fact that he is guilty, the officer should try to know more about the crime and ask for details. The ninth step is Converting an oral confession to a written confession. This is the final step where the suspect will write his guilt. The Reid technics is good when people are the real suspect and interrogator just need to have the oral and the written consent of the crime. However, this technic can be very aggressive and misleading when the person interrogated is just a witness. In fact, Gregg McCrary, a retired F.B.I. agent, said that Reid technique has a tendency to see lies where they sometimes may not exist. "They just assume they're interviewing the guilty guy." The investigator will ask a question with a positive and negative choice. Both choices usually result in the suspect admitting some sort of guilt. An innocent suspect will listen to both choices and reject both of them. The alternative should be followed up with a statement of support in which the interrogator tells the suspect that they think it was done for a good reason. (Buckley, 2000) Corroboration of the admission of guilt is stage eight of this technique. This is obtained by collecting details of the offense from the suspect by using open–ended questions. (truth sleuth) When commencing a criminal interrogation, the detective must be exceedingly prepared. It is required to know facts like: marital status, criminal background, children, address, job, hobbies? The more information the detective gathers, the better. While they need to be fully interrogated, it is important that they also feel like they can trust the interrogator and possibly relate. The interrogator must also exercise caution, if they provide facts that turn out to be false, they can lose all tenability. (truth sleuth). • 138. Wrongful Convictions : The Reid Technique Wrongful Convictions – The Reid Technique When questioning witnesses of a crime, detectives may choose a specific technique; one technique is the Reid Technique. The Reid Technique is a multi–step questioning method that pressures the witnesses or the accused to admit to the crime. It is used in North America. According to Professor Brent Snook, a psychologist at the Memorial University in Newfoundland, the Reid Technique is "Starsky and Hutch", where two hot head detectives "beat up" their suspects to encourage them confess (http://news.nationalpost.com/2011/11/25/youre–guilty–now–confess–false–admissions– put–polices–favourite–interrogation–tactic–under–scrutiny/). This paper will examine the steps of the Reid Technique, as well as reveal substantial evidence that this technique should be banned. This technique has led to false confessions. Not only does this mean that someone has been punished that isn't guilty, but it also means the real criminal has not been found and punished. The arguments against the use of this technique are the following: a) This technique violates section 11(d) Charter of Rights and Freedom. The accused is not truly presumed innocent until proven guilty. (http://publications.gc.ca/collections/Collection/CH37–4–3– 2002E.pdf) b) This method of questioning is coersive and manipulative. c) This technique is dishonest as investigators may lie about evidence. Before providing reasons to abolish the Reid Technique, it is essential to understand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Criminal Investigators continue to learn every day. They find new techniques to approach an interview/interrogation, they learn new ways to talk to people, and the success of their interviews/interrogations depends on their ability to take what they learn and apply it.
