Main area of activity:
The main focus of my project here is going to be a short film. I’m aiming at a Horror/ Thriller genre.
Rationale:
In my first year I made a short film called ‘On The Hour’ as my final major project. In this project I
showed my organisational skills, I kept all of my written work for example planning, research and
evaluation etc… very well structured so that it was easy to follow for the person reading it. This has
built up my structural skills and set the standard for what I this project to look like.
In the past units, I have done in depth research looking at different shot types, how to create sets
and props, using this I now have skills in set and prop making and an understanding of how to do
it, an example of this is the “neck slit” affect and how to create fog which I researched for my horror
short film.
Through my two years at college I have become very efficient at using the 600D and 700D Canon
cameras, and example of this is my knowledge and skill at using the ISO, Aperture and Shutter
Speed. These skills are very important for the short film that I’m going to create as seventy five
percent of the footage I shoot for this short film will be in a dark setting so it’s important that I can
use these skills to control the lighting of my scenes.
In my last short film which was ‘on the hour’ I created a visual story without the contextual
dialogue, this is good experience for what I intend to create in this project, the ability to use visuals
to tell a story is equally important if not more important than using dialogue to tell a story, the short
film that I am currently working is also a piece of visual story telling. My use of visual story telling in
the past and the experience shows that I am more than competent to do the same on this project.
In different units of my previous work I have done work on editing and adding after effects to my
clips, I have done this in client work, factual and my ‘on the hour’ short film from the year prior.
These editing skills I shall use effectively in this project and they will be a key part of how the
Project turns out.
Overall these specific aspects from work that I have done prior to this project will impact how this
project turns out, because all of the aspects are relevant to the equipment and techniques I will be
using in this project. I will use these skills by applying them to the relevant parts of my project.
Project Concept:
What I’m creating
For this Project I’m going to be creating the opening to a feature length film, the intro will feature an
opening chase scene, seven crime scenes, a Poster for the short film and a DVD Cover. The intro
to the film will be around 6 to 8 minutes long. The Genre of the short film is Slasher, this is a mix
horror and thriller. The intention of the chase scene is to create suspense and then the intro credit
scenes will introduce the film.

Plot
The plot of this film is going to follow a serial killer as he recreates murders from his favourite
slasher films. The chase scene will follow a victim as they run from the killer, the intro will show the
crime scenes of seven murders from the past, the final crime scene in the intro will be the murder
victim from the chase scene. Each of the scenes in the intro will show a crime scene from each of
the seven murders.
Crime scene details
Time stamp – Each crime scene will have a time stamp written on the wall linking to the date of
release to the movie that its taking inspirations from.
Detective – Each crime scene will have the detective and as it moves to the different victims the
detective will get closer and closer to the victim’s bodies to show how the murders are becoming
more and more personal to him.
Police officers – each of the crime scenes will also have two police officers who will move further
and further away from the detective each crime scene to show how the detective is moving apart
from his job as the case becomes more personal to him.
Chase scene
The chase scene will use various different shots to convey how fast paced and close quarters the
chase is, the main character will be chased around narrow areas and the chase will be shot from
the perspective of the character running, the audience wont see the killer that’s chasing her till the
final part of the chase, this is to add mystery to what’s chasing her, the victim will make it to the
backdoor of the house, the camera will turn around her head as she turns her head to the doorway
that she entered to the garden and the killer stood in the door. The killer will be shrouded in fog
and this will ad visual connotations of mystery around the character.
Victim 1 Crime scene
The first crime scene in the intro will be a murder styled off psycho 1960, the killer will have
dressed up the victim as Norman bates (the mother) and placed them in a shower, there will be a
stain of blood on the wall as the murderer has designed the setting of the murder after the famous
shower scene from the film psycho. This scene will introduce the detective that is trying to find the
murderer.
Victim 2 Crime scene
The second murder will be styled after Texas chainsaw massacre, in this scene the killer will have
dressed up the victim as Leatherface and the setting of this scene will be a dinner table. This
scene will also feature the detective, he will be stood closer to the body than seen in the previous
scene. There will be blood around the victim.
Victim 3 Crime Scene
The third victims murder will be styled like Halloween 1978, the killer will have dressed the victim
as Michael Myers and the setting of this scene will be a bedroom. The body will be positioned
sitting up by the bed. This scene will also feature a tomb stone. This scene will also have the
detective.
The fourth Victim will be styled like Friday the 13th 1980, the killer will dress the Victim in clothing
that resembles Jason. The setting of this scene will be down near a lake, this links to the killer and
location setting of Friday the 13th. The detective will also be in this scene, he will be stood closer to
the body than usual.
The fifth victim will be styled like a nightmare on elm street 1984. The victim will be dressed in
clothes with resemblance to Freddy Krueger. The setting of the murder crime scene will be by a
street sign, the street sign will read dream street. This is in resemblance to the setting of a
nightmare on elm street. The detective will be in this scene but he will be stood closer to this victim
than he has been before.
The fifth victim will be styled after the film child’s play 1988. The setting of this murder will be a

bedroom by a desk, this is to resemble the setting of the film child’s play. The victim will be
dressed in normal clothing however he will be sat by the desk with a chucky doll on his lap. The
detective would be stood closer to the body than before in this scene in particular.
This film will be styled like scream 1996. The setting of this scene is the back door of a house, the
house is the house from the chase scene. The victim of this murder is also from the opening chase
scene, the idea is that the last victim of the seven murders is the one that we witnessed in the
opening chase scene. The detective in this scene will be touching the body to demonstrate that it
has become a lot more personal to him. The victim’s body will be dressed like Ghost face from
scream. This marks the final murder on his killing spree.
Research
To start with I will be researching specific scenes of similar existing products that are relevant to
what I am going to be creating, I will look at the shots used and the messages they convey as well
as the angles that are used in existing products. I will then look at the mise en scene and the
connotations and denotations of the existing products. It’s important I get an understanding of what
the hidden meanings where and how they used imagery, colour, shots and angles to convey them.
The specific similar existing products that I will be researching is the watchmen intro (2009), the
scream chase scene (1996), the short film 2: AM (YouTube) and the smiling man short film
(YouTube). I will also be researching the audience specifics so I can build an audience profile to
appeal to. I will individually research the films that are featured in the crime scenes. I will also be
researching advanced tutorials on camera work, removing visual noise, Premier Pro (editing
techniques and skills) and after affects. This is to learn more and to refresh my memory on things
that I already know. I will be researching the costumes and props that I will be using In my film, so
that I can found out the price of everything as a whole and work out finances.
I will be conducting a survey; this survey will be ten questions long and the purpose is so that I can
get an understanding of who the audience is that will be watching my film so that I can do my best
to appeal to them. I will also be conducting interviews with audience members to see what their
interests are and what they think of my film concept and how I’m going to be filming it.
All this research will benefit my final product, by researching existing products I can learn and take
inspiration on mise en scene and connotations. By researching videos (tutorials) I advance my
skills increasing the quality of the footage and end product that I will produce. By conducting
surveys and interviews I can build an audience profile of what they expect and want from my film.
With this audience profile I can better the appeal of my final product.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I will evaluate my project using different methods, the first method that I am going to use weekly
reflections. This is where I will evaluate the work that I do each week, I will wait till the end of the
week and then evaluate the work completed, I will discuss if what I did in the week needs
improvements, my thoughts and feelings and the processes. When it comes to starting my
production, I will evaluate the work done for each day of the production. When evaluating the
making of the project I will discuss the strengths and weaknesses, I will evaluate the processes
used each day and the technical and aesthetic qualities of the work produced.
I will also evaluate the work as a whole in separate evaluation PowerPoint. In this PowerPoint I will
evaluate my work as a whole, first I will analyse my research and how it affected my final product
and what improvements could be made to the research to improve the final project. The second
would an analysis of experiments, I will analyse what experiments I conducted and what impact
they had on my project. Third I will analyse the overall planning (this includes shot lists,
storyboards, character sheets and script etc..) by looking at the strengths and weaknesses, what
impact it had on the project and how I could improve. The fourth part I would analyse is
contingency planning, this one is important to me because it will be interesting to see if I use any of
the contingency plans, if they were helpful and what impact the had on my project. The fifth part I
would evaluate is my time management, how it was as whole this project and what I could have
done to improve and if I had better time management what impact it would have on my project.
The sixth part of my evaluation is the final project itself, I will first look at the technical qualities and

analyse the final piece, then I will look at the aesthetic qualities of the final piece. I will then look at
the final piece as a whole, I will compare it to my plan and see if the final project is what I intended
and if not, how it has changed and if its for the better, I will look at what I could have done to
improve it. The seventh part I will be evaluating is my improvements, I will look at the
improvements I have made to each and explain why I made the improvements and how it has
helped the project. The final part of my evaluation will discuss the Weekly reflections, the strengths
and weaknesses and impact on my project.
Evaluating my project in depth will be helpful for my future career in media and the filming industry
as it shows me what I could have done better and what I did well, using my own analysis od my
work and peer feedback and can see where I went wrong and, in the future, make sure I don’t
make such mistakes again.
