Working Title:
Pressure
Audience:
My audience is going to be primarily aimed at 16-25 year olds, while technically people older can
watch this film they should preferably be old enough to understand the message the film is sending
to the viewer even though it may not be obvious, gender doesn’t really matter though it may be
aimed more at the male gender as the stereotype is that males prefer darker films with twisted
implications.
However the race wouldn’t matter and the location would likely be aimed at those in more built up
areas as they have more experience around large crowds and would be more familiar with the
concept of being under pressure in crowds, a person's sexuality would also be irrelevant in this
case as it's not aimed at one specifically.
The film would relate more to the people who spend their time with large groups of people because
they would have a higher chance of relating to the idea of being trapped and forced to conform
with social roles.
Due to the dark themes that my short film covers it is likely that my target audience are more
interested in stories that less than happy, explores ideas of deeper meanings with ambiguous
endings. It also likely that they wouldn't value the idea of the innocence of society all that much as
my film brings the idea of that innocence lost.
My audience psychographic would most likely fall into the 'Innovator' category, this is because
these people are the more independent members of society, which can lead to a more isolated
individual, in this case they may be able to relate to film more as it is based around a main
character who becomes isolated from their society which conjures mental impressions of being
trapped or out of options.
On the other hand innovators don't necessarily become isolated from their society and can in fact
persevere, which is why I want to consider an alternative ending to my film where my protagonist
can escape these feelings of pressure and being trapped.
Their NRS social grade will likely be DE, this is because these people are at the bottom of the
socio-economic ladder and are more likely to experience those feelings of isolation or lack of real
options, as opposed to someone with a high social grade who is more likely to feel like they have
more options and feel less trapped in their own lives. Another social grade it could be aimed at is
the c1c2 grade, this is because the film would mostly be accessible to those who can access
YouTube, and also have the free time to be able to watch YouTube videos at their leisure.
Rationale (approx. 100 words)
Throughout the year I have acquired skills in different areas like teamwork and refined my
organisational skills, this was most obvious I think in my short film rotation, as this required me to
not only work with other individuals efficiently but also being able to organise locations and times
where we can film the project itself. This consisted of being able to organise an efficient schedule
for everyone to stick to and in addition to this delegate what I wanted others to do properly so that
communication was consistent. I also learned to use certain people with different skills and in
different areas to finish my film to a higher standard, for example some people are more confident
on camera than others.
The last film project also granted me a much wider knowledge in many areas that are crucial to
making a film, this included refining my camera work techniques and learning new ones, but also
refining and learning new skills in Premiere Pro, for instance when I started the project I couldn't
do the simplest of editing moves in Premiere, however by the end of the project I was able to piece
together a short film fairly well, and using YouTube tutorials to learn new editing techniques. I
chose to do a short film project in the end however because I am very passionate about the film

industry, I love studying films and so I find the opportunity to create my own film a rewarding and
educational experience.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
My project is a short film inspired by the book 'Soma' in which the government use a drug to
supress the populace, and the video game 'We happy few', in which there is a drug that makes
everyone deluded in an ecstasy of unreal happiness. In my film it will be a similar drug that
eliminates negative thoughts and makes the world seem like a brighter and better place, the
protagonist of my film however decides to stop taking it, not wanting any longer to rely on a pill for
happiness. My character quickly starts to feel the withdrawal symptoms of this drug almost
instantaneously, when walking in public the character perceives other crowds of people staring at
him and making him feel pressurised. In reality from the crowd's perspective it will be him freaking
out for no reason and will be unsettled by the hysterical person. They start seeing mysterious
figures dressed all in black that start to close in on him, as they start to panic and run away they
end up cornered in an alley with the strange figures approaching him. The protagonist closes their
eyes and waits for their fate but when they open their eyes the figures are gone. In truth the figures
were physical projections of the main characters' psyche, an effect of them not being on the drug,
with the withdrawal symptoms literally scaring them into continuing to take the pill.
The figures vanishing represents their perseverance to overcome the symptoms of the drug,
Alternatively I am considering an ending where the character succumbs to their fear of being
caught and takes a spare pill to avoid 'capture', only to end up ensnaring themselves back into
their own trap. The purpose of my film is to represent to the viewer how some of us see the world
for what it can be, and some of us just use escapist methods to deliberately blind ourselves to
reality. In order to make this film successful I will have to research techniques such as how to
reduce colour saturation to create the affect of the character off the drug, and vice versa to show
them on it. I will also have to research an affect which shows the fade between saturation levels, to
show the drug gradually wearing off, it would also be a good idea to research what camera shots
are to use when characters are running away, I.e. steady cam, shaky cam, long shot etc... I am
planning to include musical soundtracks or other non-diegetic sound effects in the film to help
place emphasis on the intensity of the situation.
Evaluation (approx. 50 words)
I will evaluate my work by analysing it every week and using a weekly overview, comparing it to
other products along the way to discover new/better techniques I could in different scenes to see
what I could do to improve it. In addition my final self reflection on the whole project will be useful
for analysing the entire thing to see if there is anything else I can do to finalise it. If I have any
contingency time left at the end of the project then I will divide up the time I have left to effectively
refine the parts of my work that need improvement the most.

They start seeing mysterious figures dressed all in black that start to close in on him, as they start to panic and run away they end up cornered in an alley with the strange figures approaching him. The protagonist closes their eyes and waits for their fate but when they open their eyes the figures are gone. In truth the figures were physical projections of the main characters' psyche, an effect of them not being on the drug, with the withdrawal symptoms literally scaring them into continuing to take the pill. The figures vanishing represents their perseverance to overcome the symptoms of the drug, Alternatively I am considering an ending where the character succumbs to their fear of being caught and takes a spare pill to avoid 'capture', only to end up ensnaring themselves back into their own trap. The purpose of my film is to represent to the viewer how some of us see the world for what it can be, and some of us just use escapist methods to deliberately blind ourselves to reality. In order to make this film successful I will have to research techniques such as how to reduce colour saturation to create the affect of the character off the drug, and vice versa to show them on it. I will also have to research an affect which shows the fade between saturation levels, to show the drug gradually wearing off, it would also be a good idea to research what camera shots are to use when characters are running away, I.e. steady cam, shaky cam, long shot etc... I am planning to include musical soundtracks or other non-diegetic sound effects in the film to help place emphasis on the intensity of the situation. Evaluation (approx. 50 words) I will evaluate my work by analysing it every week and using a weekly overview, comparing it to other products along the way to discover new/better techniques I could in different scenes to see what I could do to improve it. In addition my final self reflection on the whole project will be useful for analysing the entire thing to see if there is anything else I can do to finalise it. If I have any contingency time left at the end of the project then I will divide up the time I have left to effectively refine the parts of my work that need improvement the most.
