1. Search for “Should marijuana be legalized” in the NU library Smart Search box.
2. Narrow the search to peer reviewed journals and to be within the last 5 years (2013 – 2018).
3. Choose an article and click on Full Text Available.
4. Click on “cite”to automatically create a correctly formatted citation for that article. Make sure that “APA 6th – American Psychological Association, 6th Edition” is selected from the pull-down menu.

An important step in writing a term paper or in completing many assignments includes finding information in periodicals. In general, information in periodicals is more timely, current, and up-to-date, than information in books. When professors and/or librarians speak of the periodical literature, they may use several different terms, such as, magazines, serials, or scholarly journals.
In order to look for the right kind of information in the right places, you first need to understand the assignment. Does your professor want you to look for papers in scholarly journals, or will recent articles from substantive, general interest or popular magazines be more appropriate? Once you understand the assignment, you need to know how to distinguish one kind of periodical literature from another. Here are some rough guidelines:
· A serial or periodical is any publication that appears at regular intervals (weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually) and is intended to continue indefinitely. Magazines, journals, newspapers, yearbooks, proceedings, and indexes are all serials.

Purpose: The writer of an annotated bibliography uses the bibliography to compile a list of sources to build research. The form includes a brief summary of the source and your own critical assessment of its relevance, objectivity, appropriateness, and usefulness. It is a tool that helps you keep an organized and thoughtful record of the research process and relevant information about the topic.
To this end, you will put together an annotated bibliography in preparation for Assignment 3. In addition to the primary text (Whistling Vivaldi) the bibliography will include three types of textual information: 1) a mainstream news/ magazine article, 2) a scholarly/academic “peer reviewed” article, and 3) a web-based multimedia or blog-style article.
Format: Your annotated bibliographies must paragraphs must contain a topic sentence, clear evidence from the reading, and coherent sentences on a topic. It will use transitions affectively to cohere the overall piece together. It must answer: 1) What is the information in the article you are summarizing? and 2) What is your critical assessment of the article?
Instructions:
1. Cite in MLA-citation format the name of the article.
2. Draft one or two paragraphs for each of the sources you list in your annotated bibliography.
3. Review the information in the bibliographies with your classmates to improve the grammar of the text and consider points that might help you build your argument in Assignment 3.

An annotated bibliography allows a writer and/or researcher to view multiple perspectives on a common topic. The annotations verify a source’s relevance, accuracy, and overall use as a research tool.
The annotated bibliography contains three parts: (1) the citation, (2) the summary, and (3) the critique of the source.
Think of an annotated bibliography as a reference page with added notes. This means the sources on the annotated bibliography should be alphabetized. Below each citation entry, summarize and critique the source. The summary objectively presents the work’s main points, and the critique evaluates its use, its limitations, and its credibility. Structurally, the summary and critique are sometimes integrated into a single paragraph.
Assignment: For this assignment you will created an annotated bibliography of three academic sources centered around your course theme. These sources must all be from the social sciences, so be sure to use the proper research methods and tools. The annotated bibliography (AB) will focus on the social sciences, so please use APA style. When annotating sources, consider the author’s expertise on the topic, the currency of the article, use of illustrations (such as charts), and how effectively the source highlights the research theme.
