A 16-year-old boy accused of strangling his adoptive parents and hiding their bodies in the family car is to be tried as an adult, a judge has ruled. Karate black belt Moses Kamin allegedly admitted to killing his parents - Robert Kamin, 55, and Susan Poff , 50, after officers discovered their bodies in Oakland, California. Judge Morris Jacobson of Alameda County Superior Court has ruled their is enough evidence to hold the teenager - who was 15 at the time of his parents' deaths in January - over for trial. The youngster is being held without bail and is scheduled to return to court on October 3, the

He reports that he was raised with a strong Catholic background, and he continues to practice today. His uncle sexually abused him from ages 6 to 13 when Jamie reports he was able to beat him up enough to get away. He did not want to appear “gay,” so he had numerous sexual partners and got in lots of fights to prove his masculinity. In his late teens, his brother got involved with the Mara Salvatrucha gang and tried to recruit Jamie. This was around the time he met Maria, and they decided to illegally enter the States at Maria’s urging since she was pregnant and wanted to raise their child in a better life.
Maria is 26 years old and speaks little English. She grew up in Honduras as well with her mother, grandmother, and nine brothers and sisters. She never knew her father who abandoned the family when she was an infant. Her mother had several other long-term relationships but never married. Her family was “very poor” and she did not finish school past fifth grade. Maria was raped when she was 10 and then began a life of prostitution to help her mom with feeding the rest of the family. She met Jamie when she was 18 and quickly got pregnant. She illegally entered the States and began to work in a home in Texas. After she had the baby, Jamie was able to illegally enter the States and began working odd construction jobs to pay their bills since Maria no longer was working to care for Sofia.
Jamie and Maria report that they have not been successful in having any more children, which Jamie blames on Maria’s previous sexual history. He is ashamed since in his culture, “men are
supposed to have many children.” Maria reports that she had many difficulties in having Sofia and did not get the proper medical care she needed. Sofia was born premature and has speech and other motor skill delays. Both Jamie and Maria admit they used drugs in the past but adamantly deny any current drug use because they know it would affect their immigration status. In this media piece, you will be introduced to four case studies that represent very different people in very different circumstances. Each person is involved with some form of addiction. Like people in the real world, the people in each case are struggling in their own way.
CASE 1:
Connor Gannon is a 45–year–old man who is court–ordered to treatment following his second conviction for DUI. His drinking has caused a variety of problems in his life.
Demographics and Comorbidity
45–year–old Irish Catholic Caucasian male, divorced, two children ages 20 and 18, youngest lives with mother, oldest lives outside home and attends community college, has an older brother and father who abuse alcohol and live in same city. Earned high school diploma, served in military with honorable discharge. Maintains gainful employment in the construction industry.
Sociocultural Factors
Lives alone in modest apartment, dates women he meets in local bars. Maintains contact with brother and father, with whom he enjoys drinking, but brother and father drink much more than he does and they have each experienced multiple DUIs and arrests for public intoxication. Enjoys drinking with his peers from the construction company, and drinking is typically excessive. Alcohol is involved in almost all social situations, his “way of life.” Participates in local church only for major religious events.
Addiction History
Began drinking alcohol as a teen with peers. Drinking increased after enlistment in military with episodes of extreme alcohol abuse, but never impacted his military work performance that resulted in sanctions. His construction work performance can be negatively impacted from abuse of alcohol, but there is a high tolerance for drinking behavior in his industry and he has not been sanctioned for poor work performance.
Treatment History
Received court-ordered treatment after first DUI conviction three years ago. Was required to complete months of abstinence from alcohol and had to provide random urine screens to verify his abstinence. Successfully completed the treatment program without incident. Despite this criminal conviction and treatment, he does not perceive himself as an “alcoholic”.
Reason for Seeking Treatment
Received his second DUI conviction in three years due to a severe automobile accident with minor injuries to himself and severe injuries to the driver and passengers in the other car. He has been court–ordered to treatment after serving time in jail. He will also have to see a probation counselor, submit random urine screens, and lose his driver's license for one year.
CASE 2:
Juan Medina is a 23–year–old Hispanic man who lives with his girlfriend and son. He has been ordered to seek treatment for his use of heroin or go to jail.

Student Instructions
You are working as a family preservation worker with the Department of
Children and Family Services (DCFS). You have been assigned to work with the
Bernardez family. The department recently started a new program to work with
families dealing with substance abuse. The purpose of this program is to work
with families in which substance abuse is the primary problem. The parents have
voluntarily agreed to work with your program as an alternative to having their
children removed from the home. They have been arrested for possession of
marijuana and for domestic violence. They asked the judge to give them a
chance to keep their family together. The judge placed both parents on
probation, contingent upon them getting drug treatment, marital counseling for
domestic violence, and working with your program. If they fail to get treatment
and complete your program, they will go to jail and possibly lose their children.
You will meet them on Friday. They have completed one week of treatment.
Family Composition
The Bernardez family consists of the parents, Felix, age 35, and Marisa, age 30.
They have two daughters, Danielle, age 9, and Nicole, age 7. The paternal

result, they do not smoke together anymore. He has asked her to stop using
drugs altogether. She is refusing to stop, and Mr. Bernardez feels that their
marriage is in trouble. He states that she cannot handle crack, because he has
come home on two occasions and found their two children dirty and hungry. He
has asked her to get some help or leave the house. Mr. Bernardez stated that he
came home one evening and found Mrs. Bernardez doing drugs in front of the
children. He states that he was so angry that they started to fight. Their oldest
daughter, Danielle, age 9, took her sister, Nicole, age 7, and ran across the
street to a neighbor’s house. The neighbor called their paternal grandmother,
who lives only a block away; she came and picked up the children and then
called the police.

Week 9: Case 1, Sexuality
Loretta is a 17-year-old white female. She is a student in a partial-day treatment center
focusing on vocational and social skill development. Loretta has a wide range of
disabilities related, at least in part, to a brain injury she suffered as a toddler. She has
specific learning disabilities in the areas of writing and reading. Despite her challenges,
Loretta is a hard worker. Because of her positive attitude and work ethic within the day
treatment setting, Loretta has a good reputation for being dependable and trustworthy.
However, over the past 6 months, Loretta has decided she likes sex. She has been
caught having sexual contact at the treatment center and also at home in the evenings
and on the weekends. This behavior is concerning to Loretta’s parents. They are
worried about her sexual safety, potential pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases,
and Loretta’s behavior is outside their comfort zone. They have tried lecturing,
grounding her, and other threats and punishments. Loretta does not see anything wrong
with her behavior. Apparently, the pleasure she associates with sex more than offsets
the consequences she has gotten from her parents, and she seems relatively oblivious
to the additional potential consequences of sexually transmitted diseases and
pregnancy.
Week 9: Case 2, Sexual Orientation
Patrick is a 9-year-old African American boy enrolled in the fourth grade in a private
Christian school. Patrick is exceptionally intelligent and very academically successful.
However, based on reports from his parents and from his teachers, he has always
struggled in the social domain. Most recently, Patrick has been causing a disturbance in
the classroom by telling teachers and students that one of the other male students in
the class is his boyfriend and insisting that he loves boys, not girls. This behavior has
been extremely difficult for his parents to accept as they hold a rather traditional
Christian perspective. The thought of their son being gay is very disturbing for them.
You initially were contacted by Patrick’s parents, who made it clear to you they think
Patrick is acting out in an effort to gain attention from his peers. They also make it clear
that they are either unwilling or unable to consider the possibility that Patrick might be
gay. When the three of them show up in your office, the parents dominate the
conversation and tell Patrick he needs to work with you to get things straightened out.
Their goal is for you to work with Patrick so he will put a stop to his silly and disturbing
claims of having romantic feelings for boys. Patrick refuses to offer any goals for
counseling. When you meet with him alone, he slowly opens up and you end up
somewhat convinced that this boy really does feel he is gay and likely needs to explore

Case Study of Donna Little - Chapter 5
Donna Little is a 39-year-old Indian woman who has a history of substance misuse and has struggled with reunification with her adolescent children over the last 6 years. She was in residential school from the age of 6 to 16 years old. She has a history of domestic violence in her previous relationships. Donna was the youngest of four children in her family. Her parents, siblings, and herself were raised in the same small northern reservation. Both her parents had gone to residential school in the early 1950s, as did her grandfathers and grandmothers on both sides of her family system in the late 1910s. Donna was raised in an environment of violence and mayhem in her early childhood, which she has talked about quite extensively in counseling. Although her parents abused alcohol, she emphasizes repeatedly that her family was quite ceremonial and participated in the big drum feast and singing within the community. When Donna was 6, an Indian agent wearing a red, white, and black checkered jacket gave her candy and took her to the residential school. She never had the opportunity to say good-bye to her mom and dad, who died of tuberculosis while she was in the residential school. Donna reflects on her residential school experience with a despondent look. While in the residential school, she had only one friend she could count on. Her siblings, who were also at the school, were older and thus not allowed to play with her or sleep near her at the residence dorms. This created an incredible loneliness that Donna did not know how to fill, and often she would use alcohol to help numb that pain. She did not like to drink, but it helped her to stop her thinking badly about the past. Donna was a victim of sexual abuse in the residential school, primarily by the Roman Catholic priest who was in charge. The first time she was assaulted she was 7; the last assault occurred right before she ran away at age 16. When Donna had attempted to tell the head nun in charge of her dorm what was happening to her, she was beaten severely, to the point of unconsciousness. Donna recalls it was her friend, Sue, who nursed her back to health. Donna describes her life as difficult. She went home to her community, only to find a partner who turned out to be as violent toward her as her father was to her mother. She loves her children and cares for them deeply. She breast-fed her three children and still today can feel that connection to them. When her children were taken from her home after the last time her husband beat her, she spiraled out of control. Week 2
A high school freshman creates a fake social media account for the purpose of tricking
another student. The fake account is used to show romantic interest in the targeted
teen, and many deceptive techniques are used to make the targeted teen think that the
fake account actually belongs to a real person. The holder of the fake account
eventually reveals the trick, posting screenshots on a popular social media platform of
embarrassing texts and admissions by the targeted teen. A few days later, the targeted
teen waits for the cyberbully outside of school and physically attacks the cyberbully,
sending the cyberbully to the hospital. The parents of the cyberbully want to press
charges against the targeted teen.
Week 3
Before the beginning of a school day, law enforcement arrest a 15-year-old student who
attends the local high school. Students, teachers, and even family members describe
the student as a “loner.” Some students do not even recognize the student, while others
are unaware of his name or refer to him in derogatory terms. The student does have a
small group of fellow students with whom he socializes sometimes during lunch, but it’s
unclear whether these are friendships outside of school. Teachers describe the student
as a good student but quiet. One of the student’s lunchtime acquaintances refers
investigators to a website where the student posts frequently under a screen name,
sharing tips for hacking and also anti-government views.
The student is arrested for hacking into multiple government websites, including the

A 15-year-old holds up a corner convenience store using a gun. Although the offender
threatened the clerk with the gun, no one was injured. The 15-year-old has no prior
record. The offender did run from police when he spotted them coming up the walk to
his house, but once apprehended, he did not resist arrest in any other way.
The father of the offender is currently serving a prison sentence for assault, and he has
a prior arrest for drug possession. The son reports that he recalls his father being
intoxicated, often not home, and belligerent when present.
The offender’s mother works two jobs, and therefore the offender is without supervision

The research literature indicates an association between the development of suicidal behaviours of young people and parental suicide behaviours. However, we lack empirical data on what children and adolescents know about their parent's suicidal behaviours and how they cope with the stress of living in a family where a parent has attempted suicide and may be at risk of attempting. We present the results of a qualitative exploratory study to understand what young adolescents know about the suicidality of a suicidal parent, what they thought and felt about it and how they coped with the situation. We conducted semi-structured interviews with eight adolescents between 12 and 15 years old living in a family where a parent had attempted suicide in the past 3 years, in order to obtain information on the perception of the adolescents themselves. In most cases we did not know if they knew or what they knew about their parent being suicidal. A significant number of the adolescents knew or suspected that their parent was suicidal. They used coping strategies like talking to their best friend or listening to music, but were inclined not to confide in adults and not to bring up the subject in the family. All the parents had contacted a community crisis centre for help, the adolescents were generally not offered any support . Support was generally only provided to the suicidal parent who contacted the crisis centre and to other adults involved in the intervention. Support should also be systematically offered proactively to the children and adolescents when their parent has suicidal behaviours in order to help them find efficient strategies to cope with the stresses associated with living with a suicidal parent. At 16, Ray seemed to have a good life. He had a high IQ and a 4.0 GPA. He had lots of friends, and they enjoyed hanging out. What no one knew was that Ray’s home life was miserable. His stepfather, a successful businessman who had married Ray’s mother 10 years earlier, had always rejected Ray the boy. The stepfather constantly belittled Ray in public and at home. Ray’s mother could do nothing to protect her son. Nor could she protect herself from the physical abuse her husband inflicted on her. Frequently Ray witnessed his stepfather assaulting his mother, throwing her to the floor and punching her. His half-sister, 11 years his junior, was adored by the father because she was his biological daughter. The rejection by the stepfather and earlier separation from his biological father impacted Ray’s self-perception, and by age 17 Ray was acting out. His MO was burglarizing the homes of the affluent. Sometimes he had help from friends and other times he went in alone. As he progressed in his criminal behavior, he found himself entering homes where people were present and asleep, also referred to as hot burglaries. He reported how powerful and in control he felt when standing in a bedroom of his victims while they slept. Later he would masturbate while thinking about the burglaries.
Case 2. Family Homicide
A devout Christian, married woman living in Florida had 6 children. She suffered from depression for many years. Each pregnancy and the addition of another child added to her stress and depression. Over time her conditioned worsened and her family insisted that she seek therapy. She was prescribed anti-psychotic medications and regular visits with a therapist. Over time her doses of medications doubled but her depression pulled her down into states of psychosis. There were moments of clarity. She admitted to her therapist that she was having thoughts of harming her children. That admission resulted in someone being with her at all times to supervise.
Her husband was not convinced that there was anything really wrong with her other than that she could use a “good swift kick in the pants” to get her back on track. Besides, they both wanted children. They even decided that she would go off her anti-psychotic medication so she could get pregnant again. Besides, he argued, it was God’s will for them that they have lots of children. In truth the woman had actually reported to her therapist that it was her husband who wanted more children and that he convinced her it was the right thing to do and that all would be well according to God’s plan.
The husband soon decided that his wife really did not need constant supervision and, without notifying the therapist, he went off to work leaving her alone with the 6 children. Deforestation
The Amazon forest alone creates 20% of the worlds oxygen. It has decreased by 17% in the past 50 years because of deforestation (conserve-energy-future.com). Forest’s in general only cover 30% of the world (conserve-energy-future.com ). Deforestation is killing the trees that produce oxygen, without it humans can’t survive. Deforestation should be prohibited because large plants such as trees recycle air.
If deforestation is such a problem, why does it happen? Deforestation extracts the forest of its resources. It turns the forests into farms, ranches, or urban areas. The wood from trees are used for building or could be sold as fuel. Another big cause of deforestation is quarry’s. Quarry’s take up a lot of land, and once the quarry is abandoned is almost impossible to fix. Hydropower requires dams to be built. Dams create an enormous amount of flooding, which kills thousands of trees. The increase of population is also a cause of deforestation. The more people that are on earth the more land and resources we demand.
If deforestation continues it will have a huge negative impact on our air supply. Everyday a piece of the forests is being destroyed. The more trees that are being destroyed the less oxygen can be produced. Trees use photosynthesis to covert carbon dioxide into oxygen. Photosynthesis is the main producer of oxygen, and respiration and decay remove it. Urban areas have less oxygen then rural areas, because they don’t have many plants. Throughout history oxygen levels have been steadily decreasing. Once the oxygen levels hit 7% the air is too low to support human life (thenaturalhealthplace.com). Finding ways to apply reforestation would help increase oxygen.
There are many ways to apply reforestation to reverse the harm that’s been don’t to the world. One way is to plant trees. There are some cities who have made vertical forests. They plant trees and plants that surround the building. Going paperless would help as well. Since technology has advanced, paper isn’t really needed as often. Recycling and buying recycled products will help as well. The more that people recycle there will be less demand for natural resources and trees. Reforestation will help to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air.
Deforestation does have a huge negative impact on our world, but there are quite of bit of positive too. The positive effects of deforestation are that it does gives humans space to grow. With growth comes civilizations which means more jobs and revenue. Deforestations also gives us more food and resources to satisfy our needs. It means a more comfortable life for humans. The consequences of deforestation is not worth the temporary comfort that humans get from it.

Week 9: Case 1, Sexuality
Loretta is a 17-year-old white female. She is a student in a partial-day treatment center
focusing on vocational and social skill development. Loretta has a wide range of
disabilities related, at least in part, to a brain injury she suffered as a toddler. She has
specific learning disabilities in the areas of writing and reading. Despite her challenges,
Loretta is a hard worker. Because of her positive attitude and work ethic within the day
treatment setting, Loretta has a good reputation for being dependable and trustworthy.
However, over the past 6 months, Loretta has decided she likes sex. She has been
caught having sexual contact at the treatment center and also at home in the evenings
and on the weekends. This behavior is concerning to Loretta’s parents. They are
worried about her sexual safety, potential pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases,
and Loretta’s behavior is outside their comfort zone. They have tried lecturing,
grounding her, and other threats and punishments. Loretta does not see anything wrong
with her behavior. Apparently, the pleasure she associates with sex more than offsets
the consequences she has gotten from her parents, and she seems relatively oblivious
to the additional potential consequences of sexually transmitted diseases and
pregnancy.
Week 9: Case 2, Sexual Orientation
Patrick is a 9-year-old African American boy enrolled in the fourth grade in a private
Christian school. Patrick is exceptionally intelligent and very academically successful.
However, based on reports from his parents and from his teachers, he has always
struggled in the social domain. Most recently, Patrick has been causing a disturbance in
the classroom by telling teachers and students that one of the other male students in
the class is his boyfriend and insisting that he loves boys, not girls. This behavior has
been extremely difficult for his parents to accept as they hold a rather traditional
Christian perspective. The thought of their son being gay is very disturbing for them.
You initially were contacted by Patrick’s parents, who made it clear to you they think
Patrick is acting out in an effort to gain attention from his peers. They also make it clear
that they are either unwilling or unable to consider the possibility that Patrick might be
gay. When the three of them show up in your office, the parents dominate the
conversation and tell Patrick he needs to work with you to get things straightened out.
Their goal is for you to work with Patrick so he will put a stop to his silly and disturbing
claims of having romantic feelings for boys. Patrick refuses to offer any goals for

Case Study of Donna Little - Chapter 5
Donna Little is a 39-year-old Indian woman who has a history of substance misuse and has struggled with reunification with her adolescent children over the last 6 years. She was in residential school from the age of 6 to 16 years old. She has a history of domestic violence in her previous relationships. Donna was the youngest of four children in her family. Her parents, siblings, and herself were raised in the same small northern reservation. Both her parents had gone to residential school in the early 1950s, as did her grandfathers and grandmothers on both sides of her family system in the late 1910s. Donna was raised in an environment of violence and mayhem in her early childhood, which she has talked about quite extensively in counseling. Although her parents abused alcohol, she emphasizes repeatedly that her family was quite ceremonial and participated in the big drum feast and singing within the community. When Donna was 6, an Indian agent wearing a red, white, and black checkered jacket gave her candy and took her to the residential school. She never had the opportunity to say good-bye to her mom and dad, who died of tuberculosis while she was in the residential school. Donna reflects on her residential school experience with a despondent look. While in the residential school, she had only one friend she could count on. Her siblings, who were also at the school, were older and thus not allowed to play with her or sleep near her at the residence dorms. This created an incredible loneliness that Donna did not know how to fill, and often she would use alcohol to help numb that pain. She did not like to drink, but it helped her to stop her thinking badly about the past. Donna was a victim of sexual abuse in the residential school, primarily by the Roman Catholic priest who was in charge. The first time she was assaulted she was 7; the last assault occurred right before she ran away at age 16. When Donna had attempted to tell the head nun in charge of her dorm what was happening to her, she was beaten severely, to the point of unconsciousness. Donna recalls it was her friend, Sue, who nursed her back to health. Donna describes her life as difficult. She went home to her community, only to find a partner who turned out to be as violent toward her as her father was to her mother. She loves her children and cares for them deeply. She breast-fed her three children and still today can feel that connection to them. When her children were taken from her home after the last time her husband beat her, she spiraled out of control. Donna has had long periods of abstinence, has a home in her community that is well cared for, and now has a partner who loves her deeply. Week 2
A high school freshman creates a fake social media account for the purpose of tricking
another student. The fake account is used to show romantic interest in the targeted
teen, and many deceptive techniques are used to make the targeted teen think that the
fake account actually belongs to a real person. The holder of the fake account
eventually reveals the trick, posting screenshots on a popular social media platform of
embarrassing texts and admissions by the targeted teen. A few days later, the targeted
teen waits for the cyberbully outside of school and physically attacks the cyberbully,
sending the cyberbully to the hospital. The parents of the cyberbully want to press
charges against the targeted teen.
Week 3
Before the beginning of a school day, law enforcement arrest a 15-year-old student who
attends the local high school. Students, teachers, and even family members describe
the student as a “loner.” Some students do not even recognize the student, while others
are unaware of his name or refer to him in derogatory terms. The student does have a
small group of fellow students with whom he socializes sometimes during lunch, but it’s
unclear whether these are friendships outside of school. Teachers describe the student
as a good student but quiet. One of the student’s lunchtime acquaintances refers
investigators to a website where the student posts frequently under a screen name,

A 15-year-old holds up a corner convenience store using a gun. Although the offender
threatened the clerk with the gun, no one was injured. The 15-year-old has no prior
record. The offender did run from police when he spotted them coming up the walk to
his house, but once apprehended, he did not resist arrest in any other way.
The father of the offender is currently serving a prison sentence for assault, and he has
a prior arrest for drug possession. The son reports that he recalls his father being
intoxicated, often not home, and belligerent when present.

The system claims to remove kids from homes for their own good but end up causing the kids more harm. This is my senior project topic on a corrupt, overloaded, and thoroughly broken foster care system. Advocacy to me is speaking out about needed changes, and educating the community while doing it.

The research literature indicates an association between the development of suicidal behaviours of young people and parental suicide behaviours. However, we lack empirical data on what children and adolescents know about their parent's suicidal behaviours and how they cope with the stress of living in a family where a parent has attempted suicide and may be at risk of attempting. We present the results of a qualitative exploratory study to understand what young adolescents know about the suicidality of a suicidal parent, what they thought and felt about it and how they coped with the situation. We conducted semi-structured interviews with eight adolescents between 12 and 15 years old living in a family where a parent had attempted suicide in the past 3 years, in order to obtain information on the perception of the adolescents themselves. In most cases we did not know if they knew or what they knew about their parent being suicidal. A significant number of the adolescents knew or suspected that their parent was suicidal. They used coping strategies like talking to their best friend or listening to music, but were inclined not to confide in adults and not to bring up the subject in the family. All the parents had contacted a community crisis centre for help, the adolescents were generally not offered any support . Support was generally only provided to the suicidal parent who contacted the crisis centre and to other adults involved in the intervention. Support should also be systematically offered proactively to the children and adolescents when their parent has suicidal behaviours in order to help them find efficient strategies to cope with the stresses associated with living with a suicidal parent. At 16, Ray seemed to have a good life. He had a high IQ and a 4.0 GPA. He had lots of friends, and they enjoyed hanging out. What no one knew was that Ray’s home life was miserable. His stepfather, a successful businessman who had married Ray’s mother 10 years earlier, had always rejected Ray the boy. The stepfather constantly belittled Ray in public and at home. Ray’s mother could do nothing to protect her son. Nor could she protect herself from the physical abuse her husband inflicted on her. Frequently Ray witnessed his stepfather assaulting his mother, throwing her to the floor and punching her. His half-sister, 11 years his junior, was adored by the father because she was his biological daughter. The rejection by the stepfather and earlier separation from his biological father impacted Ray’s self-perception, and by age 17 Ray was acting out. His MO was burglarizing the homes of the affluent. Sometimes he had help from friends and other times he went in alone. As he progressed in his criminal behavior, he found himself entering homes where people were present and asleep, also referred to as hot burglaries. He reported how powerful and in control he felt when standing in a bedroom of his victims while they slept. Later he would masturbate while thinking about the burglaries.

A devout Christian, married woman living in Florida had 6 children. She suffered from depression for many years. Each pregnancy and the addition of another child added to her stress and depression. Over time her conditioned worsened and her family insisted that she seek therapy. She was prescribed anti-psychotic medications and regular visits with a therapist. Over time her doses of medications doubled but her depression pulled her down into states of psychosis. There were moments of clarity. She admitted to her therapist that she was having thoughts of harming her children. That admission resulted in someone being with her at all times to supervise.
Her husband was not convinced that there was anything really wrong with her other than that she could use a “good swift kick in the pants” to get her back on track. Besides, they both wanted children. They even decided that she would go off her anti-psychotic medication so she could get pregnant again. Besides, he argued, it was God’s will for them that they have lots of children. In truth the woman had actually reported to her therapist that it was her husband who wanted more children and that he convinced her it was the right thing to do and that all would be well according to God’s plan.
The husband soon decided that his wife really did not need constant supervision and, without notifying the therapist, he went off to work leaving her alone with the 6 children. Deforestation
The Amazon forest alone creates 20% of the worlds oxygen. It has decreased by 17% in the past 50 years because of deforestation (conserve-energy-future.com). Forest’s in general only cover 30% of the world (conserve-energy-future.com ). Deforestation is killing the trees that produce oxygen, without it humans can’t survive. Deforestation should be prohibited because large plants such as trees recycle air.
If deforestation is such a problem, why does it happen? Deforestation extracts the forest of its resources. It turns the forests into farms, ranches, or urban areas. The wood from trees are used for building or could be sold as fuel. Another big cause of deforestation is quarry’s. Quarry’s take up a lot of land, and once the quarry is abandoned is almost impossible to fix. Hydropower requires dams to be built. Dams create an enormous amount of flooding, which kills thousands of trees. The increase of population is also a cause of deforestation. The more people that are on earth the more land and resources we demand.
If deforestation continues it will have a huge negative impact on our air supply. Everyday a piece of the forests is being destroyed. The more trees that are being destroyed the less oxygen can be produced. Trees use photosynthesis to covert carbon dioxide into oxygen. Photosynthesis is the main producer of oxygen, and respiration and decay remove it. Urban areas have less oxygen then rural areas, because they don’t have many plants. Throughout history oxygen levels have been steadily decreasing. Once the oxygen levels hit 7% the air is too low to support human life (thenaturalhealthplace.com). Finding ways to apply reforestation would help increase oxygen.
There are many ways to apply reforestation to reverse the harm that’s been don’t to the world. One way is to plant trees. There are some cities who have made vertical forests. They plant trees and plants that surround the building. Going paperless would help as well. Since technology has advanced, paper isn’t really needed as often. Recycling and buying recycled products will help as well. The more that people recycle there will be less demand for natural resources and trees. Reforestation will help to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air.
Deforestation does have a huge negative impact on our world, but there are quite of bit of positive too. The positive effects of deforestation are that it does gives humans space to grow. With growth comes civilizations which means more jobs and revenue. Deforestations also gives us more food and resources to satisfy our needs. It means a more comfortable life for humans. The consequences of deforestation is not worth the temporary comfort that humans get from it.

You are the financial accountant for Superstore Ltd, and are in the process of preparing its financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2018. Whilst preparing the financial statements, you become aware of the following situations:
1. On 1 July 2017, the directors made a decision, using information obtained over the last couple of years, to revise the useful life of an item of manufacturing equipment. The equipment was acquired on 1 July 2015 for $800,000, and has been depreciated on a straight-line basis, based on an estimated useful life of 10 years and residual value of nil. Superstore Ltd uses the cost model for manufacturing equipment. The directors estimate that as at 1 July 2017, the equipment has a remaining useful life of 6 years and a residual value of nil. No depreciation has been recorded as yet for the year ended 30 June 2018 as the directors were unsure how to account for the change in the 2018 financial statements, and unsure whether the 2016 and 2017 financial statements will need to be revised as a result of the change.

In June 2018, the accounts payable officer discovered that an invoice for repairs to equipment, with an amount due of $20,000, incurred in June 2017, had not been paid or provided for in the 2017 financial statements. The invoice was paid on 12 July 2018. The repairs are deductible for tax purposes. The accountant responsible for preparing the company’s income tax returns will amend the 2017 tax return, and the company will receive a tax refund of $6,000 as a result (30% x $20,000). No journal entries have been done as yet in the accounting records of Superstore Ltd, as the directors are unsure how to account for this situation, and what period adjustments need to be made in.
3. Superstore Ltd holds shares in a listed public company, ABC Ltd, which are valued in the draft financial statements on 30 June 2018 at their market value on that date - $600,000. A major fall in the stock market occurred on 10 July 2018, and the value of Superstore’s shares in ABC Ltd declined to $250,000.
4. On 21 July 2018, you discovered a cheque dated 20 April 2018 of $32,000 authorised by the company’s previous accountant, Max. The payment was for the purchase of a swimming pool at Max’s house. Literature has the power to affect even the humblest of lives. Anna in the Tropics
presents the story of a family of Cuban cigar rollers whose lives in the 1920s Florida are
brightened up and disturbed at the same time by a stranger, a lector, who reads aloud about
the passions of Tolstoy and his heroine Anna Karenina. It is common practice for employees
at the factory run by this Cuban family to be entertained by as they carry out the mundane
chores at hand – those of rolling of cigars and sorting tobacco leaves. But as those in the
factory begin to get caught up in Tolstoy’s classic, willingly or not, the book begins to work
subtle and profound changes in their emotional lives. This essay will analyze the themes
covered in Anna in the Tropics, even as it seeks to explore the various ways in which the
play’s characters are affected as the lector reads to them – along with their fellow workers, to
educate and stimulate their minds in the course of the doldrums of their repetitive tasks.
One of the very first things to note in this story is how certain tensions between old
traditions and new ways are reflected. The factory workers, for instance, are threatened by
new, mechanical cigar rolling machines because they themselves roll cigars by hand, which is
the traditional way (Cruz 19). It is not just the workers whose future is uncertain, however.
Even the very tradition of the lector, who reads out loud to the cigar rollers so that any tedium
in the factory may be broken, while at the same time facilitating the ease of passing time, is at
risk (Cruz 8). Since listening to the lector is often the closest thing to a formal education that
cigar-rollers might experience, the ending of this tradition, in particular, could signify the
demise of an informal method of learning (Aiello).
The significance of the lector is not only about giving factory workers some
semblance of an informal education, however, but it is also reflective of the theme of Cuban
heritage that is present throughout the play. The Cuban culture and traditions comprise a key
theme because first, the play is set within the Cuban American community which is living in
Ybor City in Tampa, Florida (Cruz 2). Second, it is apparent that Cuban Americans prefer to
stay within their own cultural community whenever they can help it, which explains how they
have been able to keep their old traditions. Their cigar-rolling factory, for instance, is not run
in the same fashion that American companies are, what with a lector being availed to
entertain the workers – as demanded by Cuban traditions (Cruz 9). The characters in this
story are defined and destroyed against the standard of Cuban heritage.

The economic crisis and the threat of default have had significant
repercussions on the Greek political system. The handling of the
crisis by the new PASOK government has led to a new political and

paper is twofold: First, to trace the course and the causes that led to
the present day crisis by pinpointing the major socioeconomic and
political developments that paved the way to the crisis. Second, it
seeks to explore the political management or mismanagement of the

Last Friday, a collection of men and women sat in Marion Palmateer's plush Southeast Bend living room and told a story of frustration, talking over one another and becoming increasingly angry about their understanding of the legacy of Juniper Utility and what it means to them.
These folks who gathered on Palmateer's soft white couch and chairs consider themselves the modern-day victims in the more- than-a-decade-old saga of Juniper Utility Co., a water service provider formerly owned by housing developer Jan Ward in Southeast Bend. In 2002, it was condemned by Bend for what the city said was risk of catastrophic failure.
Money and "authority" are at the core of the story now for this group, as opposed to the low water pressures of a decade ago—a problem that became so egregious that, by 2001, it became a challenge to take a shower or fill a washing machine. Water lines routinely broke down.
The people in Palmateer's living room, "a loose collection of individuals," as they call themselves, are residents of neighborhoods formerly served by Juniper Utility, including Timber Ridge, Mountain High, Tillicum Village and Nottingham Square. They are frustrated with a history they felt they had no control over but is now costing them in water bills they believe will cost them thousands more per year than they ever expected.
In 2004, homeowners association representatives from their neighborhoods signed an agreement with the city that said the owners of the roughly 700 homes of the neighborhoods would pay 100 percent of the costs associated with providing water to the neighborhoods, including making improvements to the system.
But this group of residents feels the agreement wasn't in their best interest and they had no say in the decision. An HOA board member at the time said a ballot was not sent out to homeowners for approval and, because there was no vote of homeowners, these frustrated residents believe this 2004 agreement could be illegal. Further underscoring the issue, it appears the agreement was never recorded with the county clerk's office. So, when these new people bought houses in these neighborhoods, the tab for paying to upgrade the water system didn't show up in their title searches.
"Think of the banks that lent against it," said Dan Kehoe, a resident of Mountain High who has taken a lead role in challenging the agreements between the HOAs and the city. "That's called bank fraud and people go to jail for it."
But although frustrations over this agreement are evidently fresh for these residents, it would appear that the issue should be moot because in 2011 the HOAs and the city reached a new agreement—one that should reduce costs for residents.
"We moved them from a bad agreement to a good agreement," said city of Bend Finance Director Sonia Andrews. "From something that would cost them a lot to something that would be more reasonable."

Program Leadership and Governance
Leadership
The All of Us Research Program (AoURP) is a large collaborative initiative sponsored by the
National Institutes of Health (NIH). The research program functions as a consortium of awardees
from multiple institutions. Its governance involves representation from each awardee and
participant representatives. The consortium also includes the program director and project
scientists/specialists from NIH. Each awardee has responsibilities commensurate with expertise. See
Table 0–1: Program Unit Awardees for a list of NIH-funded awardees and contact Principal
Investigators (PIs).
Dr. Joshua Denny of Vanderbilt University Medical Center serves as the Principal Investigator on
behalf of the consortium.
Governance
The Steering Committee (SC) is the primary governing body of AoURP. The SC recommends
strategic directions for the program and oversees planning, coordination, and implementation of the
program’s overall operations. Its 50 voting members include PIs from each awardee as designated
in the notice of award; representation from NIH, comprising of the deputy director and chief
officers of AoURP; representation from community partners and participants (see section 3.1); and
additional representation as needed to ensure balanced representation of stakeholders. The
governance also includes an Executive Committee (EC) which is a small governing body composed
of 17 members, that ensures the program is effectively meeting its objectives and mission. The EC
proposes solutions to challenges and provides the Director with strategies, options, and information
to aid in programmatic decisions. The Director has discretion to delegate specific decisions to the
EC. Membership of the EC is determined by the Director and reflects the awardees within the
consortium with balanced interests to ensure effective deliberation.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

You have a choice of programs including; mandatory counseling, family counseling, removal from the home and placing in foster care, diversion, incarceration in a youth home or mandatory participation in a 10 week boot camp. You must make recommendations to the judge for sentencing. You must use all the alternatives for the group and you can’t use more than one alternative twice. Make recommendations for each juvenile and explain your rationale. Note your difficulties and what further information you would have liked. Finally what is the overwhelming need for each person and how are you addressing that in your program. Sally is 13 and lives in the suburbs of Fort Wayne. She was caught riding in a stolen car with two friends from high school. Sally has no record – her mother tells you that Sally was a model child until last year when her father died. Since then Sally’s grades have dropped and she has become unmanageable. John is 16 and lives in Indianapolis. He has a long juvenile record dating back to when he was 10. John’s prior offenses include arson, disorderly conduct, larceny and assault (3). John was arrested for stealing lawn ornaments worth $23.00. John is unsupervised (no parental control) and missed his last probation meeting. Don is 14 and lives in the inner-city of Gary, Indiana. Don has no father and his mother is a crack addict. Don lives by himself for long periods of time. In the past Don was arrested for stealing food from a local bakery. Don admitted to the theft, but
- 2. noted he hadn’t eaten in two days. Don was removed from home – but was returned to his mother one year later. Don was arrested for possession of crack cocaine – it was believed he was selling. Darlene is 12 and lives in the suburbs with her mother, step- father and new baby sister. Darlene has been in juvenile court a number of times in the past year for being a runaway. She was petitioned last month by her step-father for being incorrigible. Darlene refused to follow the family rules and is defiant to her step-father. Darlene is very intelligent and is openly disrespectful to her mother and step-father. Stephen Holmes is 16 and lives in Noblesville. His father is a salesman and his mother is an executive with General Advertising Inc. Stephen has a prior record for larceny. Last month Stephen got into a fight with his brother who is 17. After the fight was over Stephen took his father’s gun and shot his brother in the head instantly killing him.
