They were both civil servants.Kamin was arrested for their murder after police discovered the couple's bodies in the car - and held at the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center in San Leandro.A videotape of the boy's statement to police was played during his preliminary hearing,' reports the Chronicle. Darlene is 12 and lives in the suburbs with her mother, step-father and new baby sister. Darlene has been in juvenile court a number of times in the past year for being a runaway. She was petitioned last month by her step-father for being incorrigible. Darlene refused to follow the family rules and is defiant to her step-father. Darlene is very intelligent and is openly disrespectful to her mother and step-father.
Stephen Holmes is 16 and lives in Noblesville. His father is a salesman and his mother is an executive with General Advertising Inc. Stephen has a prior record for larceny. Last month Stephen got into a fight with his brother who is 17. After the fight was over Stephen took his father’s gun and shot his brother in the head instantly killing him.

Week 2
A high school freshman creates a fake social media account for the purpose of tricking
another student. The fake account is used to show romantic interest in the targeted
teen, and many deceptive techniques are used to make the targeted teen think that the
fake account actually belongs to a real person. The holder of the fake account
eventually reveals the trick, posting screenshots on a popular social media platform of
embarrassing texts and admissions by the targeted teen. A few days later, the targeted
teen waits for the cyberbully outside of school and physically attacks the cyberbully,
sending the cyberbully to the hospital. The parents of the cyberbully want to press
charges against the targeted teen.
Week 3
Before the beginning of a school day, law enforcement arrest a 15-year-old student who
attends the local high school. Students, teachers, and even family members describe
the student as a “loner.” Some students do not even recognize the student, while others
are unaware of his name or refer to him in derogatory terms. The student does have a
small group of fellow students with whom he socializes sometimes during lunch, but it’s
unclear whether these are friendships outside of school. Teachers describe the student
as a good student but quiet. One of the student’s lunchtime acquaintances refers
investigators to a website where the student posts frequently under a screen name,
sharing tips for hacking and also anti-government views.
The student is arrested for hacking into multiple government websites, including the
Department of Defense and other highly secure areas.

A 15-year-old holds up a corner convenience store using a gun. Although the offender
threatened the clerk with the gun, no one was injured. The 15-year-old has no prior
record. The offender did run from police when he spotted them coming up the walk to
his house, but once apprehended, he did not resist arrest in any other way.
The father of the offender is currently serving a prison sentence for assault, and he has
a prior arrest for drug possession. The son reports that he recalls his father being
intoxicated, often not home, and belligerent when present.
The offender’s mother works two jobs, and therefore the offender is without supervision
for long periods. The mother does not have any criminal record. Upon contact, she was
concerned about her son. However, she said that she could not come to an intake
meeting conference at the requested time for fear of being fired from her job. The
offender’s grandmother lived in the same apartment with the offender and his mother,

Adult Detention facility on a charge of murder. He and a 17-year-old male, James

parking lot with the intent of robbing him of money. Prior to committing the crime,

CASE STUDY ONE: COLLEEN M.
Colleen M. is a 15-year-old Caucasian girl. She has lived in the state for her entire life. Her father abandoned the family when she was an infant and her mother is currently in a drug rehabilitation facility. Colleen has been living on a farm with her aunt. Although she has no prior contact with the law, she admits to having run away from her aunt in the past, though she always returned on her own.
Colleen’s current trouble is centered on a neighbor’s dispute about her dog. After the dog bit the neighbor, the neighbor threatened and attempted to take the dog to animal control. When the neighbor later found Colleen and the dog trespassing on her property, the neighbor verbally threatened to “get” them both. Apparently, the neighbor set fire to a scarecrow on her property to emphasize her point.
At this point, Colleen threw a nearby bucket of liquid on the neighbor. The liquid was later determined to be a pesticide. The pesticide burned the skin on contact and triggered an extreme allergic reaction in the neighbor, resulting in her death. Colleen was charged with involuntary manslaughter and was determined delinquent by the court. Colleen claims that she was simply attempting to douse the fire.
Coincidentally, a few weeks prior, Colleen had been a passenger of a motor home that had collided with a vehicle driven by the neighbor’s sister. This accident resulted in the neighbor’s sister’s death, though it was ruled an accidental homicide. Witnesses report that Colleen took a pair of fancy shoes off the feet of the corpse and immediately put them on her own feet. Colleen defends her actions by claiming that an observer told her to do this.
At the time of her arrest, Colleen’s blood tested positive for opiates. Colleen claims that while traveling with three homeless men, they unknowingly stumbled upon a field of poppies, and that, before they knew it, the intoxicating aroma caused her to pass out. Colleen claims not to have a drug problem. Colleen states that all she wants to do now is go home and that she misses her Aunt Emily.
CASE STUDY TWO: XANDER L.
Xander L. is a 17-year-old African American male and documented gang member. His prior juvenile adjudications include purse snatching, breaking and entering, and drug possession. His first juvenile adjudication occurred when he was 13 years old. He has served a year of custody in the juvenile correctional facility and has been placed on probation twice previously. His instant arrest is for possession of a concealed weapon, to which he has pled guilty.

Don is 14 and lives in the inner-city of Gary, Indiana. Don has no father and his mother is a crack addict. Don lives by himself for long periods of time. In the past Don was arrested for stealing food from a local bakery. Don admitted to the theft, but noted he hadn’t eaten in two days. Don was removed from home – but was returned to his mother one year later. Don was arrested for possession of crack cocaine – it was believed he was selling.
Darlene is 12 and lives in the suburbs with her mother, step-father and new baby sister. Darlene has been in juvenile court a number of times in the past year for being a runaway. She was petitioned last month by her step-father for being incorrigible. Darlene refused to follow the family rules and is defiant to her step-father. Darlene is very intelligent and is openly disrespectful to her mother and step-father.
Stephen Holmes is 16 and lives in Noblesville. His father is a salesman and his mother is an executive with General Advertising Inc. Stephen has a prior record for larceny. Last month Stephen got into a fight with his brother who is 17. After the fight was over Stephen took his father’s gun and shot his brother in the head instantly killing him.

CASE STUDY ONE: COLLEEN M.
Colleen M. is a 15-year-old Caucasian girl. She has lived in the state for her entire life. Her father abandoned the family when she was an infant and her mother is currently in a drug rehabilitation facility. Colleen has been living on a farm with her aunt. Although she has no prior contact with the law, she admits to having run away from her aunt in the past, though she always returned on her own.
Colleen’s current trouble is centered on a neighbor’s dispute about her dog. After the dog bit the neighbor, the neighbor threatened and attempted to take the dog to animal control. When the neighbor later found Colleen and the dog trespassing on her property, the neighbor verbally threatened to “get” them both. Apparently, the neighbor set fire to a scarecrow on her property to emphasize her point.
At this point, Colleen threw a nearby bucket of liquid on the neighbor. The liquid was later determined to be a pesticide. The pesticide burned the skin on contact and triggered an extreme allergic reaction in the neighbor, resulting in her death. Colleen was charged with involuntary manslaughter and was determined delinquent by the court. Colleen claims that she was simply attempting to douse the fire.
Coincidentally, a few weeks prior, Colleen had been a passenger of a motor home that had collided with a vehicle driven by the neighbor’s sister. This accident resulted in the neighbor’s sister’s death, though it was ruled an accidental homicide. Witnesses report that Colleen took a pair of fancy shoes off the feet of the corpse and immediately put them on her own feet. Colleen defends her actions by claiming that an observer told her to do this.
At the time of her arrest, Colleen’s blood tested positive for opiates. Colleen claims that while traveling with three homeless men, they unknowingly stumbled upon a field of poppies, and that, before they knew it, the intoxicating aroma caused her to pass out. Colleen claims not to have a drug problem. Colleen states that all she wants to do now is go home and that she misses her Aunt Emily.
CASE STUDY TWO: XANDER L.
Xander L. is a 17-year-old African American male and documented gang member. His prior juvenile adjudications include purse snatching, breaking and entering, and drug possession. His first juvenile adjudication occurred when he was 13 years old. He has served a year of custody in the juvenile correctional facility and has been placed on probation twice previously. His instant arrest is for possession of a concealed weapon, to which he has pled guilty.

A 12-year-old boy was caught in the act of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old female acquaintance by the victim's 16-year-old brother, who had arrived home and observed the juveniles in the act. The 12-year-old juvenile suspect, in addition to sexually assaulting the victim, had beaten her with the heel of a shoe that was nearby. The victim was almost unconscious when the police arrived.

The juvenile suspect was a latchkey kid, a child who returns from school to an empty home, from a single-parent home. His mother works from 2 p.m–11 p.m. Monday through Friday, so the juvenile is often alone for hours upon his return from school.
After a preliminary examination, the juvenile suspect explained that the victim purchased the marijuana and the alcohol earlier that same day. The juvenile explained that the victim had invited him to her house because they had "been liking each other" for a long time. Further, the juvenile explained that the alcohol and drugs were in the home when he arrived. He said that he and the victim began by smoking marijuana and drinking beer before they began kissing and fondling one another. Next, according to the juvenile suspect, they started to have what he described as consensual sex. After a short while they were interrupted by the victim's brother, who had come home from work. The victim’s brother then called the police to report the incident.
The juvenile had prior detentions for violation of curfew, truancy, and attempted sexual battery. No further explanations are given.

You will be writing this assessment as if you were advising the case manager, so keep in mind that your focus should be on their role and relationship with the offender, however please ensure you write in the third person.
Background: Discuss the relevance of the RNR and/or the Good Lives Models to the case study. Consider the following questions:
What are the problems associated with the offender and their offending behaviour?
What are the external factors that have impacted on their offending behaviour?
What considerations need to be made for the offender, the victim and the community?

15 years old, shot and killed his parents and three siblings at their house in South Valley, New Mexico, near Albuquerque. First he shot his mother around midnight, with a .22 rifle. He said his younger brother Zephaniah woke up, and Griego told him he had shot their mother. He next shot Zephaniah with the same rifle. He went into the bedroom shared by his two younger sisters, who were crying, and fatally shot them each in the head.
Griego went downstairs to wait for his father to return home from his shift at a homeless shelter. When the father returned about 5 a.m., Griego shot him multiple times with an AR-15-type semi-automatic rifle with a scope. The youth drove to church, with two rifles in the van. He told his girlfriend that his family was killed in an accident. A parishioner heard the story and alerted the police, who went to the house and found the bodies
Afterward Griego changed his account and made a statement to police, saying that he had been having suicidal and homicidal thoughts. He said he had obtained the guns from his parents' closet, that his father had bought them and taught both him and his mother to use them. He e-mailed a photo of his dead mother to his girlfriend. His intention had been to drive away, kill more persons, and die in a gun battle with police.

Jamie is 28 years old and speaks moderate English. He grew up in Honduras with his parents, eight brothers and sisters, and grandparents. His father frequently went on “drinking binges” and would “put his mom in her place.” It was a patriarchy system in which they did not have a lot of income and his father had numerous mistresses. He reports that he was raised with a strong Catholic background, and he continues to practice today. His uncle sexually abused him from ages 6 to 13 when Jamie reports he was able to beat him up enough to get away. He did not want to appear “gay,” so he had numerous sexual partners and got in lots of fights to prove his masculinity. In his late teens, his brother got involved with the Mara Salvatrucha gang and tried to recruit Jamie. This was around the time he met Maria, and they decided to illegally enter the States at Maria’s urging since she was pregnant and wanted to raise their child in a better life.
Maria is 26 years old and speaks little English. She grew up in Honduras as well with her mother, grandmother, and nine brothers and sisters. She never knew her father who abandoned the family when she was an infant. Her mother had several other long-term relationships but never married. Her family was “very poor” and she did not finish school past fifth grade. Maria was raped when she was 10 and then began a life of prostitution to help her mom with feeding the rest of the family. She met Jamie when she was 18 and quickly got pregnant. She illegally entered the States and began to work in a home in Texas. After she had the baby, Jamie was able to illegally enter the States and began working odd construction jobs to pay their bills since Maria no longer was working to care for Sofia.
Jamie and Maria report that they have not been successful in having any more children, which Jamie blames on Maria’s previous sexual history. He is ashamed since in his culture, “men are
supposed to have many children.” Maria reports that she had many difficulties in having Sofia and did not get the proper medical care she needed. Sofia was born premature and has speech and other motor skill delays. Both Jamie and Maria admit they used drugs in the past but adamantly deny any current drug use because they know it would affect their immigration status. The police found drug paraphernalia in the household, but Jamie and Maria stay in a condo with two other families and reported the material was not their own even though Jamie appeared intoxicated and smelled of marijuana when the police arrived last night.

Earned high school diploma, served in military with honorable discharge. Maintains gainful employment in the construction industry.
Sociocultural Factors
Lives alone in modest apartment, dates women he meets in local bars. Maintains contact with brother and father, with whom he enjoys drinking, but brother and father drink much more than he does and they have each experienced multiple DUIs and arrests for public intoxication. Enjoys drinking with his peers from the construction company, and drinking is typically excessive. Alcohol is involved in almost all social situations, his “way of life.” Participates in local church only for major religious events.
Addiction History
Began drinking alcohol as a teen with peers. Drinking increased after enlistment in military with episodes of extreme alcohol abuse, but never impacted his military work performance that resulted in sanctions. His construction work performance can be negatively impacted from abuse of alcohol, but there is a high tolerance for drinking behavior in his industry and he has not been sanctioned for poor work performance.
Treatment History
Received court-ordered treatment after first DUI conviction three years ago. Was required to complete months of abstinence from alcohol and had to provide random urine screens to verify his abstinence. Successfully completed the treatment program without incident. Despite this criminal conviction and treatment, he does not perceive himself as an “alcoholic”.
Reason for Seeking Treatment
Received his second DUI conviction in three years due to a severe automobile accident with minor injuries to himself and severe injuries to the driver and passengers in the other car. He has been court–ordered to treatment after serving time in jail. He will also have to see a probation counselor, submit random urine screens, and lose his driver's license for one year.
CASE 2:
Juan Medina is a 23–year–old Hispanic man who lives with his girlfriend and son. He has been ordered to seek treatment for his use of heroin or go to jail.

Colleen M.
is a 15-year-old Caucasian girl. She has lived in the state for her entire life. Her father abandoned the family when she was an infant and her mother is currently in a drug rehabilitation facility. Colleen has been living on a farm with her aunt. Although she has no prior contact with the law, she admits to having run away from her aunt in the past, though she always returned on her own.
Colleen’s current trouble is centered on a neighbor’s dispute about her dog. After the dog bit the neighbor, the neighbor threatened and attempted to take the dog to animal control. When the neighbor later found Colleen and the dog trespassing on her property, the neighbor verbally threatened to “get” them both. Apparently, the neighbor set fire to a scarecrow on her property to emphasize her point.
At this point, Colleen threw a nearby bucket of liquid on the neighbor. The liquid was later determined to be a pesticide. The pesticide burned the skin on contact and triggered an extreme allergic reaction in the neighbor, resulting in her death. Colleen was charged with involuntary manslaughter and was determined delinquent by the court. Colleen claims that she was simply attempting to douse the fire.
Coincidentally, a few weeks prior, Colleen had been a passenger of a motor home that had collided with a vehicle driven by the neighbor’s sister. This accident resulted in the neighbor’s sister’s death, though it was ruled an accidental homicide. Witnesses report that Colleen took a pair of fancy shoes off the feet of the corpse and immediately put them on her own feet. Colleen defends her actions by claiming that an observer told her to do this.
At the time of her arrest, Colleen’s blood tested positive for opiates. Colleen claims that while traveling with three homeless men, they unknowingly stumbled upon a field of poppies and that before they knew it; the intoxicating aroma caused her to pass out. Colleen claims not to have a drug problem. Colleen states that all she wants to do now is go home and that she misses her Aunt Emily.

Xander L
. is a 17-year-old African American male and documented gang member. His prior juvenile adjudications include purse snatching, breaking and entering, and drug possession. His first juvenile adjudication occurred when he was 13 years old. He has served a year of custody in the juvenile correctional facility and has been placed on probation twice previously. His latest arrest is for possession of a concealed weapon, to which he has pled guilty.
Xander lives with his mother in the housing projects. He reports no contact with his father. His mother presently works two jobs. Family violence laws under review after spate of abuse cases
SINGAPORE — In light of recent high-profile cases of child abuse, the laws are being reviewed to enhance deterrence of family violence and to ensure that those responsible are appropriately dealt with, said Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin yesterday.
“(We) need to look at our laws in terms of whether there is sufficient deterrence, whether the way consequences are meted out is the way we want to go,” said Mr Tan, who added that the Home Affairs Ministry and Law Ministry are looking into the issue. Two weeks ago, a couple were jailed for their ruthless torture of a two-year-old toddler, Mohamad Daniel Mohamad Nasser, which led to his death last November.
The toddler’s mother, Zaidah, 41, was sentenced to 11 years’ jail for voluntarily causing grievous hurt and child abuse.
Her boyfriend Zaini Jamari, 46, was given a 10-year jail term and 12 strokes of the cane for voluntarily causing grievous hurt to, and ill-treating, the boy.
Two days after the verdict, Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam posted on his Facebook page: “For cases like this, we need to see whether the current legal framework is adequate. They ruthlessly tortured the child for more than a month, and effectively killed him.”
He also said people must be encouraged to make a report “immediately” when they are aware of cases of abuse.
Expressing similar sentiments yesterday, Mr Tan said cases of family violence, including child and elderly abuse, often persist because bystanders have kept silent.

Case 1
Ms. G is a forty-six-year-old Caucasian female charged with burglary. She was arrested for the offense after
she was found by the police with her neighbor’s property. She was intoxicated and in possession of drugs
at the time of the arrest. She also was belligerent and combative and surprised that she was being accused
of a crime. She initiated a physical altercation with the police and was immediately taken into custody with
the highest level of constraint to protect her and the officers from potential harm. The officers’ report
indicated that Ms. G was irritable, assaultive, hyperactive, and irrational when they approached her. She
was also unable to engage in conversation and believed the officers were attempting to poison her. Her
energy level was excessively high, and she emphatically stated that she knew the mayor personally and
would have the officers and prosecutor incarcerated for accusing her of this crime. She refused defense
counsel and insisted on speaking to the judge before her pretrial. While incarcerated, she rallied the other
inmates to protest the rules and initiated a hunger strike. She became more paranoid while in the holding
cell, suggesting that the police planted drugs on her and were attempting to locate and kill her only
remaining family member. They were, in fact, attempting to contact her brother to gather information on her
mental health. Her brother provided them with relevant family history. He indicated that Ms. G had lost her
parents at an early age and was separated from her brother when they went into foster care. Her brother
had had minimal contact with her from the time she was four years old until she turned eighteen and found
him with the help of a private investigator. They maintained only intermittent contact because Ms. G was
transient, moving around the country on a regular basis. She held odd jobs, sold drugs, and lived with
boyfriends to survive. To her brother’s knowledge, Ms. G had never received any mental health treatment.
She also denied a history treatment. She refused to speak with the police about her charges and personal
history.
Ms. G faces a trial for her offense because she refused a plea bargain. She also refused defense counsel
when it was offered.
Determine what type of forensic assessment would be most appropriate for this case and discuss the
rationale for your decision.

Black Empowerment,
the author,Barbara Solomon, writes, "Empowerment refers to a process whereby persons who belong to a stigmatized social category throughout their lives can be assisted to develop and increase skills in the exercise of interpersonal influence and the performance of valued social roles" (p. 6).
Empowerment practice is based on a collaborative relationship between worker and client, initiated to promote the client's power through self-actualization, self-determination, and the fulfillment of personal goals (Gutierrez, Parsons, & Cox, 1998). Further, this process includes increasing your clients' awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. This is done two fold—through work with clients on the micro and mezzo levels and on a macro level through work in organizations and communities.
Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients' lives and apply the appropriate skills.

After a preliminary examination, the juvenile suspect explained that the victim purchased the marijuana and the alcohol earlier that same day. The juvenile explained that the victim had invited him to her house because they had "been liking each other" for a long time. Further, the juvenile explained that the alcohol and drugs were in the home when he arrived. He said that he and the victim began by smoking marijuana and drinking beer before they began kissing and fondling one another. Next, according to the juvenile suspect, they started to have what he described as consensual sex. After a short while they were interrupted by the victim's brother, who had come home from work. The victim’s brother then called the police to report the incident.
The juvenile had prior detentions for violation of curfew, truancy, and attempted sexual battery. No further explanations are given.

Social norms are a mix of informal—often unspoken—rules, guides, and standards of behavior. Thirdly, discuss how this strategy will be implemented and what considerations need to be made regarding the structural factors that have impacted on the offender.
To complete this assessment, you will need to address the following:
Introduction: Identify the case study chosen and the structure of the assignment. You will be writing this assessment as if you were advising the case manager, so keep in mind that your focus should be on their role and relationship with the offender, however please ensure you write in the third person.
Background: Discuss the relevance of the RNR and/or the Good Lives Models to the case study. Consider the following questions:
What are the problems associated with the offender and their offending behaviour?
What are the external factors that have impacted on their offending behaviour?
What considerations need to be made for the offender, the victim and the community?
Not all of this information will be available to you in the case study; you may find it useful to ‘fill in the blanks’ based on the strategy you choose to implement.

15 years old, shot and killed his parents and three siblings at their house in South Valley, New Mexico, near Albuquerque. First he shot his mother around midnight, with a .22 rifle. He said his younger brother Zephaniah woke up, and Griego told him he had shot their mother. He next shot Zephaniah with the same rifle. He went into the bedroom shared by his two younger sisters, who were crying, and fatally shot them each in the head.
Griego went downstairs to wait for his father to return home from his shift at a homeless shelter. When the father returned about 5 a.m., Griego shot him multiple times with an AR-15-type semi-automatic rifle with a scope. The youth drove to church, with two rifles in the van. He told his girlfriend that his family was killed in an accident. A parishioner heard the story and alerted the police, who went to the house and found the bodies
Afterward Griego changed his account and made a statement to police, saying that he had been having suicidal and homicidal thoughts. He said he had obtained the guns from his parents' closet, that his father had bought them and taught both him and his mother to use them. He e-mailed a photo of his dead mother to his girlfriend. His intention had been to drive away, kill more persons, and die in a gun battle with police.

You are working at an outpatient clinic when a family is referred to you for an intake session. Last night, the police were called to the Luna household for a domestic disturbance. Since the family is working on the immigration process to become American citizens, their case worker recommended that they seek counseling to address the family issues.
Jamie is 28 years old and speaks moderate English. He grew up in Honduras with his parents, eight brothers and sisters, and grandparents. His father frequently went on “drinking binges” and would “put his mom in her place.” It was a patriarchy system in which they did not have a lot of income and his father had numerous mistresses. He reports that he was raised with a strong Catholic background, and he continues to practice today. His uncle sexually abused him from ages 6 to 13 when Jamie reports he was able to beat him up enough to get away. He did not want to appear “gay,” so he had numerous sexual partners and got in lots of fights to prove his masculinity. In his late teens, his brother got involved with the Mara Salvatrucha gang and tried to recruit Jamie. This was around the time he met Maria, and they decided to illegally enter the States at Maria’s urging since she was pregnant and wanted to raise their child in a better life.
Maria is 26 years old and speaks little English. She grew up in Honduras as well with her mother, grandmother, and nine brothers and sisters. She never knew her father who abandoned the family when she was an infant. Her mother had several other long-term relationships but never married. Her family was “very poor” and she did not finish school past fifth grade. Maria was raped when she was 10 and then began a life of prostitution to help her mom with feeding the rest of the family. She met Jamie when she was 18 and quickly got pregnant. She illegally entered the States and began to work in a home in Texas. After she had the baby, Jamie was able to illegally enter the States and began working odd construction jobs to pay their bills since Maria no longer was working to care for Sofia.
Jamie and Maria report that they have not been successful in having any more children, which Jamie blames on Maria’s previous sexual history. He is ashamed since in his culture, “men are
supposed to have many children.” Maria reports that she had many difficulties in having Sofia and did not get the proper medical care she needed. Sofia was born premature and has speech and other motor skill delays. Both Jamie and Maria admit they used drugs in the past but adamantly deny any current drug use because they know it would affect their immigration status. Introduction
In this media piece, you will be introduced to four case studies that represent very different people in very different circumstances. Each person is involved with some form of addiction. Like people in the real world, the people in each case are struggling in their own way.
CASE 1:
Connor Gannon is a 45–year–old man who is court–ordered to treatment following his second conviction for DUI. His drinking has caused a variety of problems in his life.
Demographics and Comorbidity
45–year–old Irish Catholic Caucasian male, divorced, two children ages 20 and 18, youngest lives with mother, oldest lives outside home and attends community college, has an older brother and father who abuse alcohol and live in same city. Earned high school diploma, served in military with honorable discharge. Maintains gainful employment in the construction industry.
Sociocultural Factors
Lives alone in modest apartment, dates women he meets in local bars. Maintains contact with brother and father, with whom he enjoys drinking, but brother and father drink much more than he does and they have each experienced multiple DUIs and arrests for public intoxication. Enjoys drinking with his peers from the construction company, and drinking is typically excessive. Alcohol is involved in almost all social situations, his “way of life.” Participates in local church only for major religious events.
Addiction History
Began drinking alcohol as a teen with peers. Drinking increased after enlistment in military with episodes of extreme alcohol abuse, but never impacted his military work performance that resulted in sanctions. His construction work performance can be negatively impacted from abuse of alcohol, but there is a high tolerance for drinking behavior in his industry and he has not been sanctioned for poor work performance.
Treatment History
Received court-ordered treatment after first DUI conviction three years ago. Was required to complete months of abstinence from alcohol and had to provide random urine screens to verify his abstinence. Successfully completed the treatment program without incident. Despite this criminal conviction and treatment, he does not perceive himself as an “alcoholic”.
Reason for Seeking Treatment
Received his second DUI conviction in three years due to a severe automobile accident with minor injuries to himself and severe injuries to the driver and passengers in the other car. He has been court–ordered to treatment after serving time in jail. He will also have to see a probation counselor, submit random urine screens, and lose his driver's license for one year.
CASE 2:
Juan Medina is a 23–year–old Hispanic man who lives with his girlfriend and son. He has been ordered to seek treatment for his use of heroin or go to jail.
Demographics and Comorbidity
23–year–old Hispanic male, lives with girlfriend and one son, dropped out of high school in 10th grade because of poor academic performance that was complic.

Colleen M.
is a 15-year-old Caucasian girl. She has lived in the state for her entire life. Her father abandoned the family when she was an infant and her mother is currently in a drug rehabilitation facility. Colleen has been living on a farm with her aunt. Although she has no prior contact with the law, she admits to having run away from her aunt in the past, though she always returned on her own.
Colleen’s current trouble is centered on a neighbor’s dispute about her dog. After the dog bit the neighbor, the neighbor threatened and attempted to take the dog to animal control. When the neighbor later found Colleen and the dog trespassing on her property, the neighbor verbally threatened to “get” them both. Apparently, the neighbor set fire to a scarecrow on her property to emphasize her point.
At this point, Colleen threw a nearby bucket of liquid on the neighbor. The liquid was later determined to be a pesticide. The pesticide burned the skin on contact and triggered an extreme allergic reaction in the neighbor, resulting in her death. Colleen was charged with involuntary manslaughter and was determined delinquent by the court. Colleen claims that she was simply attempting to douse the fire.
Coincidentally, a few weeks prior, Colleen had been a passenger of a motor home that had collided with a vehicle driven by the neighbor’s sister. This accident resulted in the neighbor’s sister’s death, though it was ruled an accidental homicide. Witnesses report that Colleen took a pair of fancy shoes off the feet of the corpse and immediately put them on her own feet. Colleen defends her actions by claiming that an observer told her to do this.
At the time of her arrest, Colleen’s blood tested positive for opiates. Colleen claims that while traveling with three homeless men, they unknowingly stumbled upon a field of poppies and that before they knew it; the intoxicating aroma caused her to pass out. Colleen claims not to have a drug problem. Colleen states that all she wants to do now is go home and that she misses her Aunt Emily.
CASE STUDY TWO: XANDER L.
Xander L
. is a 17-year-old African American male and documented gang member. His prior juvenile adjudications include purse snatching, breaking and entering, and drug possession. His first juvenile adjudication occurred when he was 13 years old. He has served a year of custody in the juvenile correctional facility and has been placed on probation twice previously. His latest arrest is for possession of a concealed weapon, to which he has pled guilty.
Xander lives with his mother in the housing projects. He reports no contact with his father. His mother presently works two jobs. Although she is supportive of him, and Xander reports a close relationship with his mother, she does not approve of his conduct. In the past, she has reported him to the police. Family violence laws under review after spate of abuse cases
SINGAPORE — In light of recent high-profile cases of child abuse, the laws are being reviewed to enhance deterrence of family violence and to ensure that those responsible are appropriately dealt with, said Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin yesterday.
“(We) need to look at our laws in terms of whether there is sufficient deterrence, whether the way consequences are meted out is the way we want to go,” said Mr Tan, who added that the Home Affairs Ministry and Law Ministry are looking into the issue. Two weeks ago, a couple were jailed for their ruthless torture of a two-year-old toddler, Mohamad Daniel Mohamad Nasser, which led to his death last November.
The toddler’s mother, Zaidah, 41, was sentenced to 11 years’ jail for voluntarily causing grievous hurt and child abuse.
Her boyfriend Zaini Jamari, 46, was given a 10-year jail term and 12 strokes of the cane for voluntarily causing grievous hurt to, and ill-treating, the boy.
Two days after the verdict, Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam posted on his Facebook page: “For cases like this, we need to see whether the current legal framework is adequate. They ruthlessly tortured the child for more than a month, and effectively killed him.”
He also said people must be encouraged to make a report “immediately” when they are aware of cases of abuse.
Expressing similar sentiments yesterday, Mr Tan said cases of family violence, including child and elderly abuse, often persist because bystanders have kept silent.

Case 1
Ms. G is a forty-six-year-old Caucasian female charged with burglary. She was arrested for the offense after
she was found by the police with her neighbor’s property. She was intoxicated and in possession of drugs
at the time of the arrest. She also was belligerent and combative and surprised that she was being accused
of a crime. She initiated a physical altercation with the police and was immediately taken into custody with
the highest level of constraint to protect her and the officers from potential harm. The officers’ report
indicated that Ms. G was irritable, assaultive, hyperactive, and irrational when they approached her. She
was also unable to engage in conversation and believed the officers were attempting to poison her. Her
energy level was excessively high, and she emphatically stated that she knew the mayor personally and
would have the officers and prosecutor incarcerated for accusing her of this crime. She refused defense
counsel and insisted on speaking to the judge before her pretrial. While incarcerated, she rallied the other
inmates to protest the rules and initiated a hunger strike. She became more paranoid while in the holding
cell, suggesting that the police planted drugs on her and were attempting to locate and kill her only
remaining family member. They were, in fact, attempting to contact her brother to gather information on her
mental health. Her brother provided them with relevant family history. He indicated that Ms. G had lost her
parents at an early age and was separated from her brother when they went into foster care. Her brother
had had minimal contact with her from the time she was four years old until she turned eighteen and found
him with the help of a private investigator. They maintained only intermittent contact because Ms. G was
transient, moving around the country on a regular basis. She held odd jobs, sold drugs, and lived with
boyfriends to survive. To her brother’s knowledge, Ms. G had never received any mental health treatment.
She also denied a history treatment. She refused to speak with the police about her charges and personal
history.
Ms. G faces a trial for her offense because she refused a plea bargain. She also refused defense counsel
when it was offered.
Determine what type of forensic assessment would be most appropriate for this case and discuss the

Black Empowerment,

Empowerment practice is based on a collaborative relationship between worker and client, initiated to promote the client's power through self-actualization, self-determination, and the fulfillment of personal goals (Gutierrez, Parsons, & Cox, 1998). Further, this process includes increasing your clients' awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. This is done two fold—through work with clients on the micro and mezzo levels and on a macro level through work in organizations and communities.
Social workers cannot effectively empower clients without first understanding the mechanisms of oppression and how they impact their day-to-day work. Then social workers can recognize the impact on their clients' lives and apply the appropriate skills.

She knows the process well and developed a description of the steps in the supply management process. First, Sharon conducts a daily check of the supplies in the storage room. If there is a supply that is running low, Sharon submits an order to the medical supplier. When the clinic receives the shipment, Sharon unpacks the shipment and cross-checks the supplies that were shipped with the supplies that were ordered. If there is a discrepancy, the entire shipment must be returned to the medical supplier, who then rushes a new shipment to the clinic to be received the next day. If there is no discrepancy, or once the new shipment is received, unpacked, and cross-checked, Sharon stocks the shelves in the storage room and gives the supply bill to the clinic’s accountant, who ensures that the medical supplier receives payment.

The systems development life cycle (SDLC) is a model for planning and implementing change within an organization. It is important for many individuals to be represented in the process, especially the end users of the system or the employees who must live with the change. As informatics become more and more widespread throughout the health care field, collaboration between information technology (IT) professionals and health care practitioners is becoming increasingly important. The nurse informaticist is able to combine the perspective of the information technology side with the clinical nursing perspective.
While the titles and specific responsibilities of nurse informaticists vary across organizations and practice settings, the fundamental purpose of the role remains the same. Nurse informaticists synthesize their knowledge of how technology can improve health care with an understanding of clinical practice and workflow. This is why nurse informaticists can be instrumental in facilitating the SDLC for informatics in health care. For this Discussion, you examine the relationship between the nurse informaticist and the use of the SDLC.
To prepare:
Review the information in this week’s Learning Resources on the SDLC and the role of the nurse informaticist. Reflect on Chapter 1 of the Dennis, Wixom, and Roth course text and consider how the information about the systems analyst role translates into nursing and health care.
Consider a recent change in your organization related to the implementation of a new technology or system. How was this change handled? What was the general SDLC process? Who was involved, and what were the outcomes?
Identify whether your organization (or one with which you are familiar) has a formal title or position for the nurse informaticist. This position may be called by a different name, such as nurse informatics specialist or informatics analyst, so be sure to review the position description.
If your organization has a position for the nurse informaticist, what are the responsibilities of that position? If your organization does not have such a position, conduct research in the Walden Library and at credible online sources on the role of the nurse informaticist.
Reflect on the role of the nurse informaticist in the overall health care field. How is this position connected to the SDLC? Assess the benefits of having this specialized position within health care organizations and involving the nurse informaticist in the SDLC.

In clinical settings, patients often present with various respiratory symptoms such as congestion, coughing, and wheezing. While identifying a symptom’s underlying illness can be challenging, it is essential because even basic symptoms such as persistent coughing can be a sign of a more severe disorder. Advanced practice nurses must be able to differentiate between moderate and severe respiratory disorders, as well as properly diagnose and prescribe treatment for their patients. For this reason, you must have an understanding of the pathophysiology of respiratory disorders.
Consider the following three scenarios:
Scenario 1:
Ms. Teel brings in her 7-month-old infant for evaluation. She is afraid that the baby might have respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) because she seems to be coughing a lot, and Ms. Teel heard that RSV is a common condition for infants. A detailed patient history reveals that the infant has been coughing consistently for several months. It’s never seemed all that bad. Ms. Teel thought it was just a normal thing, but then she read about RSV. Closer evaluation indicates that the infant coughs mostly at night; and, in fact, most nights the baby coughs to some extent. Additionally, Ms. Teel confirms that the infant seems to cough more when she cries. Physical examination reveals an apparently healthy age- and weight-appropriate, 7-month-old infant with breath sounds that are clear to auscultation. The infant’s medical history is significant only for eczema that was actually quite bad a few months back. Otherwise, the only remarkable history is an allergic reaction to amoxicillin that she experienced 3 months ago when she had an ear infection.
Scenario 2:
Kevin is a 6-year-old boy who is brought in for evaluation by his parents. The parents are concerned that he has a really deep cough that he just can’t seem to get over. The history reveals that he was in his usual state of good health until approximately 1 week ago when he developed a profound cough. His parents say that it is deep and sounds like he is barking. He coughs so hard that sometimes he actually vomits. The cough is productive for mucus, but there is no blood in it. Kevin has had a low-grade temperature but nothing really high. His parents do not have a thermometer and don’t know for sure how high it got. His past medical history is negative. He has never had childhood asthma or RSV. His mother says that they moved around a lot in his first 2 years and she is not sure that his immunizations are up to date. She does not have a current vaccination record.
Scenario 3:
Maria is a 36-year-old who presents for evaluation of a cough. She is normally a healthy young lady with no significant medical history. She takes no medications and does not smoke. She reports that she was in her usual state of good health until approximately 3 weeks ago when she developed a “really bad cold.” The cold is characterized by a profound, deep, mucus-produci.

Further, this process includes increasing your clients' awareness of the structural oppression that exists and its impact on them. It is the role of social workers to empower clients and to bring about awareness of the inequalities that exist in society. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.

Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Karate black belt Moses Kamin allegedly admitted to killing his parents - Robert Kamin, 55, and Susan Poff , 50, after officers discovered their bodies in Oakland, California. Judge Morris Jacobson of Alameda County Superior Court has ruled their is enough evidence to hold the teenager - who was 15 at the time of his parents' deaths in January - over for trial. The youngster is being held without bail

Moses Kamin, of Oakland, California, entered a not guilty plea in Alameda County Superior Court earlier this year. He apparently admitted strangling his mother first with his hands and then some type of ligature during the argument.When Mr Kamin came home later that evening, the teen came up behind him and strangled him as well, prosecutors claim.The couple’s bodies were found hidden under blankets in the back of the family's car parked outside their house near Lake Merritt, which investigators believe Kamin had tried unsuccessfully to set ablaze.Police went to the Kamin house after their employers reported they did not show up for work. They were both civil servants.Kamin was arrested for their murder after police discovered the couple's bodies in the car - and held at the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center in San Leandro.A videotape of the boy's statement to police was played during his preliminary hearing,' reports the Chronicle. His attorney, Assistant Public Defender Drew Steckler, tried unsuccessfully to have the judge throw out the videotaped statement on the grounds that his client did not understand his legal rights, according to the newspaper. Mr Steckler is reported to be planning to appeal that decision and to have the case transferred to Juvenile Court.Following his arrest, colleagues of the couple told the San Francisco Chronicle that the couple had been having problems with their son, who they believed was spending too much time in the Occupy Oakland camp. Occupy Oakland is allied with New York City's Occupy Wall Street and other protests like Occupy San Francisco and Occupy San Jose.Co- workers mourned the well-known couple after news of their murders became public. Mrs Poff's boss called her death 'a terrible loss'. Joshua Bamberger told the Oakland Tribune: 'I've never met anyone who lived with as little ambivalence about making the world a better place.'Mrs Poff, who attended UC Berkley, and Mr Kamin, a graduate of Stanford University, met through friends. The couple adopted in 2002 because they were

You have a choice of programs including; mandatory counseling, family counseling, removal from the home and placing in foster care, diversion, incarceration in a youth home or mandatory participation in a 10 week boot camp. - 4. Don is 14 and lives in the inner-city of Gary, Indiana. Don has no father and his mother is a crack addict. Don lives by himself for long periods of time. In the past Don was arrested for stealing food from a local bakery. Don admitted to the theft, but noted he hadn’t eaten in two days. Don was removed from home – but was returned to his mother one year later. Don was arrested for possession of crack cocaine – it was believed he was selling. Darlene is 12 and lives in the suburbs with her mother, step- father and new baby sister. Darlene has been in juvenile court a number of times in the past year for being a runaway. She was petitioned last month by her step-father for being incorrigible. Darlene refused to follow the family rules and is defiant to her step-father. Darlene is very intelligent and is openly disrespectful to her mother and step-father. Stephen Holmes is 16 and lives in Noblesville. His father is a salesman and his mother is an executive with General Advertising Inc. Stephen has a prior record for larceny. Last month Stephen got into a fight with his brother who is 17. After the fight was over Stephen took his father’s gun and shot his brother in the head instantly killing him. Papers will be completed in Word Format as an attachment. The papers will be typed in Times New Roman using 12 font. Papers will be double-spaced. The papers will be at least 500 words in length. The papers will be a critical examination of a topic area chosen by the instructor. Students are encouraged to critically examine and question a topic area in detail using their book.
