In recent years, interest for petrochemical processes has been increasing, especially in refinement area. However, the high variability in the dynamic characteristics present in the atmospheric distillation column poses a challenge to obtain quality products. To improve distillates quality in spite of the changes in the input crude oil composition, this paper details a new design of a control strategy in a conventional crude oil distillation plant defined using formal interaction analysis tools. The process dynamic and its control are simulated on Aspen HYSYS dynamic environment under real operating conditions. The simulation results are compared against a typical control strategy commonly used in crude oil atmospheric distillation columns.
These slides are developed for a part of the undergraduate course in Petroleum Refinery Engineering. The slides are also helpful for Masters level introductory course.

In order to achieve this, the formulation of emulsion using stabilized alkaline solution according to the specific formulated factorial combination was done. Pumping of the formulated emulsions through a pilot scale pipe-system was considered. Also, thermal demulsification of emulsion transported to measure the oil content recovered, in order to ascertain the best yield under the best conditions was carried out.
Data obtained from the experiments performed shows that run 8 with highest factorial level (75C, 1wt. %, 0.1M) has the most stable emulsion with no phase separation, higher flowability and very reduced pressure drop. Similar trend was also seen in run 4 with the least pressure drop.
The observed properties of emulsions formed can be attributed to the effect of (i) concentration of the aqueous phase (ii) salinity of the aqueous phase and (iii) emulsification temperature.
The crude oil assay is the collection of the results of physical tests that are performed to determine the key properties (boiling point, density, viscosity, heteroatom contents, acid number, etc.) of crude oil and its fractions. It is the procedure based on laboratory and pilot plant testing for determining the general distillation and quality characteristics of crude oil. Crude oil assay is important for determining the value and processability of crude oil. This is the preliminary step before processing the crude oil in the refinery. . In order to utilize the crude oil assay data, it is necessary to understand the results and significance of some of the laboratory tests.

Effective and efficient removal of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an essential step when sweetening gas for downstream processes. By simultaneously turning the captured hydrogen sulfide into elemental sulfur, a Frames THIOPAQ O&G system improves gas value, while creating a saleable chemical widely sought after in the agricultural and bulk chemical industry.
