Godzilla (1954) was a Japanese independent film directed by Ishirō Honda about a giant radioactive monster, Godzilla, that terrorizes Japan. The film was produced on a small budget of $175,000 but grossed $2,250,000 at the box office. It used a man in a rubber suit, or "suitmation", to portray Godzilla and was filmed at double speed to give the monster a distorted effect. The film served as a cultural coping mechanism for Japan about the atomic bombings while also warning about the dangers of nuclear weapons and humanity's impact on nature.
