Packaging
Frosted Flakes
Spring 2019

Proposal
Frosted Flakes is a classic cereal brand that most
everyone knows. With how world is evolving,
more and more companies are switching to more
eco-friendly, minimalistic packaging. Frosted
Flakes packaging usually consists of a cardboard
box printed with bright colors, and also a plastic
bag inside the box which contains the cereal itself,
but does not reseal. While this is a very common
way to store cereal, it could be much more eco-
friendly and could also do without that plastic
bag, which is dangerous to our environment.
Looking at coffee ground packaging from local
coffee shops has inspired the idea of a resealable
brown bag container. One of the main concerns
with the usual way of packaging cereal is that its
not fully resealable while the coffee packaging
usually has large twist-tie type of resealing. This
will be incorporated in the cereal packaging,
accompanied by a simple script.
To give the bag an authentic eco-friendly feeling,
All of the art work will be transferred on to a
Speedball carving block, and then hand carved,
and hand printed onto the brown bag.

Printing Process
1. The design is printed out, then outlined
with an HB Pencil. The traced design is then
laid face down on the rubber carving block.
The rounded back end of the carving tool is
used to transfer the design on to the block
by applying pressure and rubbing over the
lines drawn on the paper.
2. Carving begins! As the block is being
carved it helps to go over raised areas with
sharpie to see it clearer during the process.
These raised areas are what is going to be
printed in the end.
3. Once the carving is finished, use acetone
to remove excess sharpie; the chemicals in
the sharpie react poorly with the ink used, so
this step is important. The sharpie will stain
the block purple afterwards, but that is not
going to effect the print in the long run.

4. Ink is placed on a flat, clean, washable
surface so it can be rolled out.
5. Ink is rolled with a brayer. Once the ink has
completely covered the brayer it is ready to
move on.
6. Ink is rolled carefully onto the block,
making sure to cover any raised areas that
are intended to be printed.

7. Rubber printing block is placed on top of
paper. Pressure is applied in order to transfer
the ink from the block onto the paper; a tool
is typically used for this step or pressure can
be applied with hands or a flat heavy object.
8. The block is removed, revealing the design. 9. The print is complete! Once the print dries,
the bag can be constructed.
About 10 prints were made until one came
out perfectly, and that one was chosen to be
constructed into a paper bag using brown
craft paper and a strong glue.

Massillon Cable Television has a very outdated
logo, which is interesting considering they recently
redesigned it in the last 10 years. Id like to give
their company a modern, bright logo that really
shows the energy movement in technology like
cable, internet, and phone.
“We know you have a lot of choices when it comes
to entertainment, so we try to do things differently
at MCTV. We strive to go the extra “smile” every
day by treating our customers the way we would
want to be treated. It’s the little things – like how
we answer phones quickly and fix problems the
same day; thats what sets us apart”
Since 1965, MCTV’s 165+ local employees have
been serving their neighbors with a full set of
advanced broadband products which includes
High-Speed Internet, Digital TV, residential
and commercial Phone, television advertising,
dedicated fiber optic connections and security
systems. More than 50k homes and businesses
in Stark, Wayne, Summit, and Holmes Counties
rely on MCTV for their telecommunications needs.

DIN was chosen because of its very clear legibility.
The typeface is used all across Germany for their
highway signage meaning it’s easy to read from
far away and from a close distance. The sharp
angles of the typefaces also pairs well with all of
the sharp angles in the new logo itself.

Proposal
Ramen is a very exciting dish. It can be made
many different ways, with a lot of different kinds
of ingredients, in so many countries. I wanted
to showcase the excitement and movement of the
dish. Here the recipe is a very basic Shoyu Ramen
recipe, vegetarian with a little spice.
The illustration was created for They Cook and
Draw, a website where artists are able to upload
creatively presented recipes that they Illustrate
In this piece I wanted to focus on movement, just
because still images of food can be slightly boring;
especially for a recipe with these visible ingredients,
giving them some character is a fun, exciting way
to show them off.

In a medium pot, bring water to a
rapid boil. Add one uncracked
egg, boil for 6-7 minutes.
Place in an ice bath
when ﬁnished, peel
shell off and cut in
half for presentation.
In another saucepan
add vegetable broth
and noodles. Bring to
a low boil and cook 7
min. Chop green onion
stalks. Add noodles, broth,
chili oil, soy sauce, green onion,
and soft boiled egg to large soup
bowl. Serve with spoon and chopsticks.

Type Design
Starting this I began with quick a line sketch that was
in my original group of sketches. From there I decided
on rounded edges with bubble shaped letters to try
to match the feeling of the rest of the illustration. A
spot color was chosen from the Ramen bowl on the
opposite side of the page to help your eye go all the
way across the page and not get stuck.

In a medium pot, bring water to a rapid boil. Add one egg, boil for

Proposal
When looking for an example of an app to help
keep track of medication they were all very medical
feeling; cold blue colors with white text, and very
little room for imagination. With the app I have
designed, you don’t feel like you’re in a hospital
while you are using it.
It’s a warm environment with fun characters that
lead you through the entire way. With the PilPals
app you can track how medications make you feel,
make sure that you’re taking your medication on
time, and educate yourself on the side effects and
symptoms that are associated with the medicine.

Missteps
In this version of the app, I took some missteps
that made the design feel very sterile, cold, and
medical which is the exact opposite of what I
intended for the app to be. From here I scrapped
the entire design and went with a warmer, more
welcoming and lighthearted feeling.

medication in one place, as well as view info on
your alarms. You can also add and remove any
medication, all from this page.
I wanted to focus on the characters, and really
emphasize how different this app is from other
medication tracking apps. The characters will
hopefully lure in a younger audience as well.

Keeping track of your medication is important,
but can also be also incredibly difficult, especially
if you have to take medication more than once a
day. Need a fun, easy way to keep track? We’ve
got your back. PilPals is a simple, easy to use way
to make sure you take your medicine on time ev-
ery day. Fun characters for each medication keep
things fresh and lighthearted.
In this app:

Track how each medication makes you feel.
Profile feature to keep your health concerns all in
one easy place.

you the option to add a second time just in
case you must take the medication many

bubble with a scroll bar which is used to
track how a specific pill makes you feel.
This information is compiled with all of
the other medications being taken, and
an average is created from that.
Tapping the calendar icon in the bottom
right corner takes you to this page. The
average created from your medication
pages is compiled here and given a color
value. That information is displayed based
on the day on the calendar.
Tapping the person icon opens up your
profile. This is where you can view all the
information about yourself, including your
health summary, which can be helpful
during doctors appointments, and a list of
all the times you must take medication.
