Problems of Well-being - Cellphones in our lives - Multimedia presentation

2. #INTRODUCTION
We live in a day and age where people feel more comfortable leaving their
wallet behind rather than their cell phone as they drive away in their car. Most of
use would turn around for our cell phones but not our wallets, which actually
contains our license to drive our vehicles!
Being in the midst of the smartphone boom/explosion, nearly
everyone, their kids, and their grandparents have a smartphone in their pocket.
How is this little, yet powerful device contributing to our society? Is it bringing us
closer together or further apart? How is our body reacting to this foreign object
kept in our pocket every day? Is that screen turning our brains to mush?
These are some of the questions I will be answering in the next few slides.
Sit back, put your phone on airplane mode, close the Facebook page in your
browser, and don‟t tweet about this, its really not relevant #nottrueitis #payattention

“SOCIAL MEDIA ISN'T VERY SOCIAL, ITS JUST AN AGGREGATION OF INDIVIDUALS” – ANDREW
KEEN
During his Skype interview with Abby Johnson, Andrew Keen Author of the book
„#digitalvertigo‟, explains that Social Media might have an adverse effect on our social lives than its title
might suggest. As mentioned in the interview, social media contributes to “a dangerous form of digital
narcissism”. Although narcissism is a common word used to describe the human species, “the internet
enables, perpetuates, amplifies and exaggerates narcissism. As we retreat from real social things such
as; reading, watching or listening to other peoples ideas, music, movies, books we seem to be more
and more preoccupied with broadcasting ourselves which is viewed as deeply narcissistic and can
reflect negatively on us as an individual, or collectively as a species”. We are becoming selfish
individuals.
As we are distracted by our smartphone apps, we are losing something that is essential to us
as a human species. The act of socializing. We are slowly losing touch with this vital behavior. “Although
our species is remarkably flexible and adaptive, it doesn‟t mean that we can adapt to anything and
everything. We are at a moment now in social media where we need to think a little more carefully and
critically, and where we draw the line. We need to maintain our sanctity of our inner world, and inner
life.” (Johnson, 2012) Click here to watch the

7. #HUMANPRODUCT
One of the most popular social media apps on your smart phone is Facebook. Just recently in May of
2012, Facebook became a publically traded company. This means that Facebook is now meant to generate a
profit for its share holders. This profit is generated from its users (your) information which is then sold to
marketers, companies and small businesses. This information can then be used to run marketing campaigns, or
help agencies identify their demographic. This idea can be summarize in the following quote:
“Ask yourself who is paying for Facebook. Usually the people who are paying are the customers. Advertisers are the ones who are paying. If
you don't know who the customer of the product you are using is, you don't know what the product is for. We are not the customers of Facebook, we are
the product. Facebook is selling us to advertisers.” - Douglas Rushkoff (Solon)
With the expansion of how we use our smartphones, we are making ourselves very vulnerable to be
exploited by marketing. Every time we like a post, share a link, look at a photo or click an add, we are fulfilling our
own marketing overload destiny. These targeted adds are like nothing marketers have been able to create
before.
Now that we are a human product, our reality as we know it has changed. The more information they
have on each individual, the more likely the outcomes that you buy the product. Since we are constantly
bombarded with adds, where will the line be drawn between manipulation and influencing. If an add can speak
directly to someone conscious and subconscious voice, isn't that too far into manipulation us? The more and
more we buy into these adds and these minor wants the more and more we separate from our actual human
social life. These products are separating us faster than we understand.
9. #CELLPHONEALLERGIES
Have you noticed that maybe you suddenly have allergies or your existing
allergies have worsened? Well recent studies by Dr. Hajime Kimata from Unitika
Hospital, Kyoto, Japan, states that it might just be caused by your cellphone. Dr. Kimata
believes that the microwaves from your cellphone excites antigens which can cause
allergic reactions. She conducted a study in which she had 52 patients watch a one-hour
long movie with half of them talking on their phones and the other half with their phones
turned off. The results are as suggested:
"When we did blood tests we found that the mobile phones had raised the levels of certain chemicals in
the blood which provoke allergic reactions such as eczema, hay fever and asthma," Kimata said. "We were
surprised but we carried out a properly controlled study. One group of patients had their phones turned on and
receiving for an hour while they watched a video. The second group watched the same video while having their
phones turned off so they couldn't receive calls. There was a significant increase in allergy levels which seemed
to be linked to the use of mobile phones." (Tidwell, ND)
Further testing indicated that the group using mobile phones also had greater skin
reactions when exposed to house dust mites or pollen from cedar trees.
11. #RADITIONANDYOURCELLS
Although radiation from you cell phone isn't strong enough to cause heating or any immediate
signs of radiation, a study done by Dr. Joseph Mercola suggests that your headsets electromagnetic
fields can stimulate your cells to increase or decrease. Most cellular telephones run on a 900Mghz
band. In Dr. Mercola‟s study of 10 female, which which examined over 580 different proteins in their
body, he found that this particular band increased some proteins up to 89% and decreased others by
32%. Even if the physiological significance of these changes in proteins have not been determined, dr.
Mercola states “So far, no one knows for sure. But I firmly believe that dismissing it as inconsequential
would be a serious mistake, especially in light of ALL the data available, pointing to a wide variety of
long-term health risks.” (Mercola, 2008).
These are some of Dr. Mercola‟s (2009) thoughts when it comes to the biological damage created by
these waves:
“We believe the biological damage comes both from the modulated signals that are carried ON the carrier microwave and the
carrier wave itself. However, they do their damage by two entirely different mechanisms. These modulated information-carrying radio
waves resonate in biological frequencies of a few to a few hundred cycles per second, and can stimulate your cellular receptors causing a
whole cascade of pathological consequences that can culminate in fatigue, anxiety and ultimately cancers.
This is a MAJOR problem because in the last few years we have had an exponential increase in exposure to these waves. It
took from 1984 to 2004 to reach the first billion cell phones, the second billion took just 18 months, the third billion took only nine
months, and the fourth billion just six months. And this does not factor in any of your exposure to WiFi routers (wireless internet), which
are now pervasive. Since there is a lag time of five to 20 years before many of these effects become clinically apparent, now is the time to
act before you or your family suffer the damage.”
12. #YOURBRAINONACELLPHONE
A study published in June 2003
issue of Environmental Health
Perspectives, examined the effects that
EMF‟s (Elector Magnetic Fields) had on
the neurons in the brains of rats. Their
study found severe protein leaked
through the blood barriers of the brain.
They explained their findings as such:
“The bottom picture gives a clear visual of how a two-hour
dose of GSM cell phone radiation, in varying
intensities, impacted a test rat. The dark patches are proteins
that leaked through the blood-brain barrier, causing significant
neuronal damage in the cortex, hippocampus, and basal
ganglia.” (Mercola, 2008).
