5. FUNCTION OF PIDA SYSTEM
The Punjab Irrigation and Drainage
Authority has the following broad
functions: To perform all duties and
functions of the irrigation department. To
plan, design, construct, operate and
maintain the Irrigation, Drainage and Flood
control infrastructure located within its
territorial jurisdiction.

7. AREA WATER BOARDS
Below PIDA, Area Water Boards (AWBs)
are being formed which will assume
responsibility for managing and
financing the Operation and
Maintenance Cost of Irrigation and
Drainage Network progressively within
its jurisdiction. The AWBs will manage
the system at main or brach canals.

1. Lower Chenab Canal (East)
2. Lower Chenab Canal (West)
3. Bahawalnagar Canal
4. Dera Jaat Canal
5.Lower Bari Doab Canal

10. LOWER CHENAB CANAL
The Lower Chenab Canal (East) is about
300 km in length and 60 km in width. It
covers
a gross area of about 2.12 million acres
with a CCA of 1.84 Million acres in the
districts of Gujranwala, Hafizabad,
Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Nankana Sahib
and Toba Tek Singh.

11. LOWER CHENAB CANAL
The land of LCC (W) Area Water Board is
very famous all over the world for the
production of rice, cotton, sugarcane,
maize, wheat, oil seed and fodder.

13. BAHAWALNAGAR CANAL
Bahawalnagar is an important district which is
located in southern part of Punjab province.
According to the National Census of 1998,
total population of the district is more than
two million; spread over an area of 8878 sq.
km, comprising of five tehsils and 118 union
councils, it is a defunct state of Bahawalpur.
After the partition in 1947, the district faced
an influence of migrates from India. The
district had rich agricultural lands since older
days and the new migrants tilled it to
transform the vast lands into rich agricultural
assets. The local farmers are lucky to have a
network of canals and distributaries which
greatly helped in increasing productivity.

15. DERA JAAT CANAL
Dera jaat Area Water Board is covering Dera
Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur districts which are
situated in south punjab.The river Indus also
flows through the lands of these districts and
has been helpful in maintaining agriculture. In
accordance to the climate of the area,
sorghum, gram, bajra , wheat and oilseed are
normally cultivated which in turn contribute a
lot to improve the economic conditions of the
farming community
.

17. LOWER BARI DOAB
CANAL
It serves a gross area of 740,674
hectares (1,829, 465 acres) and a
cultivable command area of 675,667
hectares (1,668, 897 acres) in Lower
Bari Doab of the Punjab. Its current
designed discharge is 11,000 cusecs.

ORGANIZATION (FOS)
The management of the system
at the minor distributing level
is the responsibility of Fos
which are owned & controlled
by the farmers

20. FUNCTION
To manage, operate, and maintain the distributary and minor together
with infra-structure including hydraulic structures according to the
approved design
To obtain authorized irrigation water supplies, as per availability from
the main or branch canal at the head regulator of the distributary
To supply the irrigation water equitably and efficiently to the farmers and
other canal water users within its area
To protect the environment within its area including the water quality of
the channels
To assess the water charges and other irrigation related charges to be
collected from the canal water users
To collect the water charges, fees, rates and other dues from the persons
liable to pay them

21. WARABANDI SYSTEM
WARABANDI is a rotational method
for equitable distribution of the
available water in an irrigation system
by turns fixed according to a
predetermined schedule specifying
year, day, time and duration of supply
to each irrigator in proportion to the
size of his landholding in the outlet

23. FUNCTION
The main canal distributing points operate
at supply levels that would allow
distributory canals to operate at no less
than 75 percent of full supply level.
Only authorized outlets draw their allotted
share of water from the distributary at the
same time.
Outlets are ungated and deliver a flow of
water proportional to the area command

24. KACHCHA WARABANDI
The warabandi which has been decided by
the farmers solely on their mutual
agreement, without formal involvement of
any government agency is known as
kachcha ( ordinary or
unregulated) warabandi.

25. PUCCA
The warabandi decided after field
investigation and public inquiry
by the irrigation department when
disputes occurred and issued in
officially recognized warabandi
schedules, is called pucca warabandi.
