After reviewing the related literature, this paper summarizes studies about oral interpretation on the base of culture and pragmatics. Then the paper illustrates the function of culture and pragmatics in oral interpretation teaching and analyzes the relationship between culture and oral interpretation as well as the relationship between pragmatics and oral interpretation. And then it discusses about cultural and pragmatic oral interpretation teaching, and points out pragmatics has a significant guiding to oral interpretation teaching. Finally, it suggests that culture and pragmatics should help to facilitate oral interpretation instruction, including the following aspects: increasing pragmatic awareness, implementing teaching in context, emphasizing cultural teaching and employing authentic teaching materials.
Investigating the Integration of Culture Teaching in Foreign Language Classroom: A Case Study

Many scholars argue that language and culture are closely related to each other and hence the teaching of a foreign language cannot take place without the teaching of its corresponding culture which helps promoting language learning and enhancing learners’ motivation and performance (Corbett, J. (2003); (1996); Hinkel, E. (1999); Kramsch, C. (2006)). This being the case, the present study aims at putting emphasis on the importance and significance of integrating culture teaching in foreign language classroom in the Algerian school. It seeks to investigate whether foreign language teachers grant significant value and interest to the foreign language culture. Therefore, a descriptive analysis of the English and French textbooks of the secondary education was carried out to identify and examine the way the cultural dimensions are being dealt with. In addition, a survey was conducted by addressing a questionnaire to a number of secondary school teachers of English and French to investigate to what extent they consider culture teaching in their classroom. The research results revealed that despite the fact that there is a move towards fostering culture teaching, the textbooks still offer few tasks that deal with cultural aspects and teachers are still unfamiliar with the techniques to promote it in the classroom, thus they neglect culture teaching and prefer to focus on other aspects in the class like accuracy, fluency and language skills development. In light of these findings, a number of considerable implications and recommendation are presented to foreign language teachers and language policy decision-makers to stress the importance of integrating culture teaching and adequately implement it in the classroom.

Textual Metadiscourse of Kenyan Parliamentary Committee ReportsPremier Publishers
Barely any studies have been carried out on the metadiscoursal aspects of parliamentary committee reports in Kenya and generally in Eastern Africa region. Consequently, this study sought to analyze the metadiscursive aspects of selected Kenyan Parliamentary Committee Reports (PCRs) and their communicative purpose. The study exposes the textual metadiscursive features used in parliamentary reports in order to achieve their communicative purpose. The study is premised on Hyland’s (1998, 2005) description of metadiscourse and their use to enhance communicative potential in a text. Descriptive research design was used with corpora being generated from fifteen Kenyan parliamentary committee reports sampled five each from selected County Assemblies, the National Assembly and the Senate. Findings from the study indicate that different aspects of textual metadiscourse are blended together geared at guiding, convincing and persuading legislators to adopt PCRs. Findings from the study offer insights on the interplay between parliamentary metadiscoursal styles, rhetorical patterns and contributes to the existing pool of knowledge in applied linguistics on issues related to PCR genre and metadiscourse analysis.
The Ideology of Translation in Turtle and Dolphin Story into Indonesian and B...AJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT : This research examines the ideology of translation applied in translating adjectives in an
English trilingual child story book entitled “Turtle and Dolphin” by Dunkle, et al (2012) which is written in
English, Indonesian, and Balinese. It has a message to keep the environment clean and green. This study is
aimed at finding out the translation ideology by describing the procedures and methods of translation. The data
were obtained by documentation method and note-taking technique. Three theories applied to analyze the
problems of study are translation procedures by Vinay and Dalbernet (in Venuti, 2000), translation methods by
Newmark‟s (1988), and translation ideology by Hatim & Mason (1997). The results showed that there are three
procedures applied including literal, transposition, and modulation. Meanwhile, the translation methods applied
were literal and communicative method. The amounts of source language emphasis is higher than the target
language emphasis, therefore it can be considered that the ideology of translation is the Foreignization ideology.
The use of this ideology is well adjusted especially for children as the main target readers. The translation result
is easier to comprehend as it is simpler and more neutral both in structure and meaning
Metaphor as a Mirror of Gender-based Ideology in an Algerian Context: A Sociolinguistic Perspective

Gender-based ideologies seem to be firmly embedded in the way Algerian men and women are stereotyped through the process of metaphorisation which, in turn, tends to reinforce patriarchal traditional beliefs towards gender roles and identities. Hence, this paper sheds light on the most used metaphors manifesting in the spoken Algerian Dialectal Arabic variety in Tiaret city, West of Algeria. It seeks also to reveal the sociolinguistic implications associated with those metaphorical representations of men and women in the Algerian culture, and depict the real meanings that they denote in real life situations. To do this, the study employs a corpus-based analysis of a group of metaphors taken from the daily spoken discourse of people living in the speech community of Tiaret. The findings of qualitative analyses revealed that a good deal of metaphors tend to support gender ideologies and reinforce negative stereotypical representations concerning femininity, while they demonstrate positive connotations vis-à-vis masculinity.

A Radical Shift to a Profound and Rigorous Investigation in Political Discour...Bahram Kazemian
Drawing on overarching methodological frameworks of Hallidayan grammatical metaphor, Fairclough’s
perspective on critical discourse analysis and rhetoric, this study attempts to posit a novel, integrated and
practical approach to political, the media, advertisement and other discourses. To this end and based on the
proposed approach, it aims to critically and eclectically exemplify and dissect three speeches delivered by Mr.
Barack Obama, former president of the US, to first manifest the integrated approach practicality and adeptness
through analysis; then by virtue of analysis to unveil how language is manipulated and distorted by orators in
order to convey seamlessly intended messages and political creeds to the audience. Surveying recent annals of
literature, to date no one has conducted an integrated study applying these disciplines in an individual paper and
this study as a trial one can be useful for upcoming research. The analysis depicts practicality and efficiency of
the integrated approach and displays that the speeches abound with nominalizations, modal verbs, parallelisms
and antitheses. Furthermore, there are some three-part listing, the use of passivization, quotations and modality
metaphors. Therefore, a tendency to utilize more nominalizations, parallelism and other devices by the speaker
can be a fundamental reason for making his political language more powerful, impressive, persuasive and
ambiguous as well.

Metafunctional shifts in the Translation of Student and Professional TranslatorsRusdi Noor Rosa
The involvement of linguistics theories in translation studies in the recent years that becomes more and more obvious since they can replace the intuition of the translator to solve their translation problem provides an opportunity to explore the best translation practice. One of linguistics theories concerning with the translation practice is systemic functional linguistics (SFL) which views grammar as a resource for making meaning. This research focused on analyzing the translation product using an SFL metafunction theory involving student and professional translators. In particular, this research aimed at finding out how the student translators and professional translators shift transitivity, mood, and theme elements in the translation process. This research was a qualitative research using a content analysis method. The participants of this research were 5 student translators and 5 professional translators who were asked to translate two history texts composing of around 240-word long from English into Bahasa Indonesia. The readability of the source texts was measured with the help of SMOG readability formula. The data were collected using Translog and retrospective questionnaire. Based on the data analysis, it was found that (i) the professional translators did metafunctional shifts more frequently than did the student translators; and (ii) the shifts done by the professional translators paid attention to how the meaning is kept (inter-strata shifts), while the student translators concerned with the form of the shifts (intra-strata shifts).
Role of Speech Therapy in Overcoming Lexical Deficit in Adult Broca’s Aphasia

This is an exploratory study and qualitative in nature. Unit of exploration is ‘Adult Broca’s Aphasic Patients.’ This paper aims to explore the function and integrity of ‘Speech Therapy’ for adult Broca’s aphasia. Aphasia is the after-effect of brain damage, commonly found in left hemisphere which disrupts language faculty. The present study focuses on ‘Lexical’ aspect of language in which an individual faces trouble in processing of words. In Broca’s aphasia affected individual suffers from diminished capability of speaking/communication. To recover such diminished capabilities, speech therapy is utilized. This study intends to investigate the effectiveness of speech therapy that how speech therapy helps to adult Broca’s aphasia to recover their speaking or conversing skills? Participants of the study are ‘Speech therapists.’ Purposeful sampling, particularly Snowball sampling has been undertaken. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted from five speech therapists, which have been analyzed through thematic analysis under the light of ‘Sketch Model’ given by De ruiter and De beer (2013). The Findings of the study suggest that speech therapy may be proved helpful for Broca’s aphasia to recover their communicating capabilities but it requires much time (minimum 6 months). Moreover, recovery depends upon certain factors such as age, level of disorder and willingness.

It has been repeatedly suggested that there are L1 interference and gender-related differences in second language acquisition. This study aims to investigate L1 transfer and sex effect on fricative learning by comparing the spectral peak value of the target fricatives /s / and F2 onset of their following vowels produced by late Cantonese-Mandarin bilinguals and L1 Mandarin speakers. The results indicated that there were significant gender effects in /s/ and / /, yet no significant gender effect in / /. And there were statistically significant differences in /s/ and / /, but no significant differences in / / between the two language groups.
Engaging in Critical Language and Cultural Studies Approaches for an Examination of Racism and Migration in the British Public Space

This article focuses on the relevance of Critical Discourse Analysis and of cultural studies approaches to an examination of racism and migration in the British public space. Critical Discourse Analysis as an active engagement with discourse in the social space is one of these critical approaches. The article is based on Halliday’s systematic functional grammar in terms of transitivity and modality. The main goal of this study is to investigate transitivity and modality about migration as it appears in a number of British tabloids. The focus is on aspects of racism in western countries, where there is a majority of white people and on issues related to patterns of access to the public and issues of inequality, racism and discrimination in the public space. Racism's reproduction and promotion by certain segments of the media is not a simple or straightforward process. It is important to see how the media plays a role in the reproduction of racism.

Persuasive Techniques in Imam Al-Baqir's (a.s.) Speeches

Persuasion is an interactive communicative process in which the persuader aims at influencing the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of his audience (Jowett and O'Donnell, 2012: 32). As such, there are certain persuasive techniques and strategies employed by the persuader in order to achieve his ultimate goal of gaining his audience's agreement and support. Accordingly, this paper sets itself the task of detecting the persuasive strategies and techniques utilized in Imam Al-Baqir’s (a.s.) speeches. More precisely, it aims at elucidating the persuasion configuration of the above mentioned speeches. Consequently, it is hypothesized that (1) the most prevalent persuasive strategy adopted by the Imam is response changing, (2) persuasive techniques such as: alliteration, rhetorical questions, repetition, exaggeration, emotive language, and metaphor are frequently utilized by the Imam. To achieve the aim of this study and test its hypotheses, three speeches of Imam Al- Baqir have been chosen for analysis by utilizing the persuasion model developed by the study. Moreover, a statistical method represented by percentage equation has been implemented to demonstrate the findings of the analysis of the data. Results of the analysis verify the above mentioned hypotheses.

Code-Switching in Urdu Books of Punjab Text Book Board, Lahore, PakistanBahram Kazemian
The study highlights English code-switching in Punjab Urdu textbooks. The research aims at finding and categorizing Urdu-English code-switches. Another rationale behind the study is to present Urdu equivalents of the switches from an Urdu-English dictionary; for instance, adakar for actor and sayyah for tourist. Textbooks of 5th, 6th, 9th and 10th class are selected for data collection and analysis. A number of instances are observed at morpheme, word, phrase and clause levels. Data is analyzed qualitatively. The data analysis shows switches at all the mentioned levels. The researchers propose a revision of the existing textbooks in the light of the given equivalents and a careful scrutiny of the compilation of future textbooks to preserve the purity of Urdu language.
Relationship between Creativity and Tolerance of Ambiguity to Understand Metaphorical Polysemy: A Pilot Study

This study focuses on lexical ambiguity as polysemous words were proved to hinder meaning understanding. In an attempt to operationalize polysemous words from a cognitive perspective, the researcher deduces that metaphorical polysemy engenders words with basic and peripheral (or metaphorical) senses. Participants were asked to answer Multiple Stimulus Types Ambiguity Tolerance Scale II (MSTAT II). Then, they answered Wallach and Kogan Creativity Test, which revealed a slight positive relationship with MSTAT II. Furthermore, the results show two things. First, there is a positive relationship between creativity and semi-technical vocabulary tests scores. Second, there is a link between creativity level and understanding the prototypical meanings of words. Contrarily, MSTAT II and prototypical meanings tests scores correlation is very weak.

Arabic language is the most spoken languages in the Semitic languages group, and one of the most common languages in the world spoken by more than 422 million. It is also of paramount importance to Muslims, it is a sacred language of the Islamic Holly Book (Quran) and prayer (and other acts of worship) in Islam is performed only by mastering some of Arabic words. Arabic is also a major ritual language of a number of Christian churches in the Arab world and it is also used in writing several intellectual and religious Jewish books in the Middle Ages. Despite this, there is no semantic Arabic lexicon which researchers can depend on. In this paper we introduce Azhary as a lexical ontology for the Arabic language. It groups Arabic words into sets of synonyms called synsets, and records a number of relationships between words such as synonym, antonym, hypernym, hyponym, meronym, holonym and association relations. The ontology contains 26,195 words organized in 13,328 synsets. It has been developed and contrasted against AWN which is the most common available Arabic lexical ontology.

Metafunctional shifts in the Translation of Student and Professional TranslatorsRusdi Noor Rosa
The involvement of linguistics theories in translation studies in the recent years that becomes more and more obvious since they can replace the intuition of the translator to solve their translation problem provides an opportunity to explore the best translation practice. One of linguistics theories concerning with the translation practice is systemic functional linguistics (SFL) which views grammar as a resource for making meaning. This research focused on analyzing the translation product using an SFL metafunction theory involving student and professional translators. In particular, this research aimed at finding out how the student translators and professional translators shift transitivity, mood, and theme elements in the translation process. This research was a qualitative research using a content analysis method. The participants of this research were 5 student translators and 5 professional translators who were asked to translate two history texts composing of around 240-word long from English into Bahasa Indonesia. The readability of the source texts was measured with the help of SMOG readability formula. The data were collected using Translog and retrospective questionnaire. Based on the data analysis, it was found that (i) the professional translators did metafunctional shifts more frequently than did the student translators; and (ii) the shifts done by the professional translators paid attention to how the meaning is kept (inter-strata shifts), while the student translators concerned with the form of the shifts (intra-strata shifts).
Role of Speech Therapy in Overcoming Lexical Deficit in Adult Broca’s Aphasia

This is an exploratory study and qualitative in nature. Unit of exploration is ‘Adult Broca’s Aphasic Patients.’ This paper aims to explore the function and integrity of ‘Speech Therapy’ for adult Broca’s aphasia. Aphasia is the after-effect of brain damage, commonly found in left hemisphere which disrupts language faculty. The present study focuses on ‘Lexical’ aspect of language in which an individual faces trouble in processing of words. In Broca’s aphasia affected individual suffers from diminished capability of speaking/communication. To recover such diminished capabilities, speech therapy is utilized. This study intends to investigate the effectiveness of speech therapy that how speech therapy helps to adult Broca’s aphasia to recover their speaking or conversing skills? Participants of the study are ‘Speech therapists.’ Purposeful sampling, particularly Snowball sampling has been undertaken. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted from five speech therapists, which have been analyzed through thematic analysis under the light of ‘Sketch Model’ given by De ruiter and De beer (2013). The Findings of the study suggest that speech therapy may be proved helpful for Broca’s aphasia to recover their communicating capabilities but it requires much time (minimum 6 months). Moreover, recovery depends upon certain factors such as age, level of disorder and willingness.

It has been repeatedly suggested that there are L1 interference and gender-related differences in second language acquisition. This study aims to investigate L1 transfer and sex effect on fricative learning by comparing the spectral peak value of the target fricatives /s / and F2 onset of their following vowels produced by late Cantonese-Mandarin bilinguals and L1 Mandarin speakers. The results indicated that there were significant gender effects in /s/ and / /, yet no significant gender effect in / /. And there were statistically significant differences in /s/ and / /, but no significant differences in / / between the two language groups.

This article focuses on the relevance of Critical Discourse Analysis and of cultural studies approaches to an examination of racism and migration in the British public space. Critical Discourse Analysis as an active engagement with discourse in the social space is one of these critical approaches. The article is based on Halliday’s systematic functional grammar in terms of transitivity and modality. The main goal of this study is to investigate transitivity and modality about migration as it appears in a number of British tabloids. The focus is on aspects of racism in western countries, where there is a majority of white people and on issues related to patterns of access to the public and issues of inequality, racism and discrimination in the public space. Racism's reproduction and promotion by certain segments of the media is not a simple or straightforward process. It is important to see how the media plays a role in the reproduction of racism.

Persuasive Techniques in Imam Al-Baqir's (a.s.) Speeches

Persuasion is an interactive communicative process in which the persuader aims at influencing the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of his audience (Jowett and O'Donnell, 2012: 32). As such, there are certain persuasive techniques and strategies employed by the persuader in order to achieve his ultimate goal of gaining his audience's agreement and support. Accordingly, this paper sets itself the task of detecting the persuasive strategies and techniques utilized in Imam Al-Baqir’s (a.s.) speeches. More precisely, it aims at elucidating the persuasion configuration of the above mentioned speeches. Consequently, it is hypothesized that (1) the most prevalent persuasive strategy adopted by the Imam is response changing, (2) persuasive techniques such as: alliteration, rhetorical questions, repetition, exaggeration, emotive language, and metaphor are frequently utilized by the Imam. To achieve the aim of this study and test its hypotheses, three speeches of Imam Al- Baqir have been chosen for analysis by utilizing the persuasion model developed by the study. Moreover, a statistical method represented by percentage equation has been implemented to demonstrate the findings of the analysis of the data. Results of the analysis verify the above mentioned hypotheses.

Code-Switching in Urdu Books of Punjab Text Book Board, Lahore, PakistanBahram Kazemian
The study highlights English code-switching in Punjab Urdu textbooks. The research aims at finding and categorizing Urdu-English code-switches. Another rationale behind the study is to present Urdu equivalents of the switches from an Urdu-English dictionary; for instance, adakar for actor and sayyah for tourist. Textbooks of 5th, 6th, 9th and 10th class are selected for data collection and analysis. A number of instances are observed at morpheme, word, phrase and clause levels. Data is analyzed qualitatively. The data analysis shows switches at all the mentioned levels. The researchers propose a revision of the existing textbooks in the light of the given equivalents and a careful scrutiny of the compilation of future textbooks to preserve the purity of Urdu language.
Relationship between Creativity and Tolerance of Ambiguity to Understand Metaphorical Polysemy: A Pilot Study

This study focuses on lexical ambiguity as polysemous words were proved to hinder meaning understanding. In an attempt to operationalize polysemous words from a cognitive perspective, the researcher deduces that metaphorical polysemy engenders words with basic and peripheral (or metaphorical) senses. Participants were asked to answer Multiple Stimulus Types Ambiguity Tolerance Scale II (MSTAT II). Then, they answered Wallach and Kogan Creativity Test, which revealed a slight positive relationship with MSTAT II. Furthermore, the results show two things. First, there is a positive relationship between creativity and semi-technical vocabulary tests scores. Second, there is a link between creativity level and understanding the prototypical meanings of words. Contrarily, MSTAT II and prototypical meanings tests scores correlation is very weak.

Arabic language is the most spoken languages in the Semitic languages group, and one of the most common languages in the world spoken by more than 422 million. It is also of paramount importance to Muslims, it is a sacred language of the Islamic Holly Book (Quran) and prayer (and other acts of worship) in Islam is performed only by mastering some of Arabic words. Arabic is also a major ritual language of a number of Christian churches in the Arab world and it is also used in writing several intellectual and religious Jewish books in the Middle Ages. Effects of the Entrepreneurial Environment on Tunisian Individuals’ Decision ...inventionjournals
Due to the severe competitiveness in the marketplace, venture creation in big towns, such as SfaxTunisia, has become a serious challenge. Then, considering entrepreneurship as a source of wealth creation, economic growth, social progress, and technological development, the current paper seeks to identify the motivating factors that are triggering new venture creators’ decision to start their businesses. To identify the observed motivations, we developed a questionnaire that we addressed to 86 new entrepreneurs drawing on the theoretical and empirical literature. The application of factor analysis has revealed that business creators’ decision to launch their ventures rests upon three main motivational dimensions: socio-economic conditions, entrepreneurial skills, and financial and non-financial assistance. The study also suggests some recommendations to enhance entrepreneurship in Tunisia.
Introduction to Big Data and Hadoop using Local Standalone Modeinventionjournals
Big Data is a term defined for data sets that are extreme and complex where traditional data processing applications are inadequate to deal with them. The term Big Data often refers simply to the use of predictive investigation on analytic methods that extract value from data. Big data is generalized as a large data which is a collection of big datasets that cannot be processed using traditional computing techniques. Big data is not purely a data, rather than it is a complete subject involves various tools, techniques and frameworks. Big data can be any structured collection which results incapability of conventional data management methods. Hadoop is a distributed example used to change the large amount of data. This manipulation contains not only storage as well as processing on the data. Hadoop is an open- source software framework for dispersed storage and processing of big data sets on computer clusters built from commodity hardware. HDFS was built to support high throughput, streaming reads and writes of extremely large files. Hadoop Map Reduce is a software framework for easily writing applications which process vast amounts of data. Wordcount example reads text files and counts how often words occur. The input is text files and the result is wordcount file, each line of which contains a word and the count of how often it occurred separated by a tab.
Study of the Thermal Behavior of the Plaster Reinforced Vegetable Fiberinventionjournals
This study focused on the characterization of a heat insulating material, aims to determine the thermal characteristics of the plaster reinforced with vegetable fibers. It intends to replace the fibers of sisal generally used in practice to strengthen the plaster is replaced by those of the RheckthophyllumCamerunense (RC), a fiber of humid equatorial forests, in applications such as the manufacture of the staff, separating walls of dwellings. The objective of this work is to make a comparative assessment of the thermal diffusivity using a material composed of high porous plaster, non-reinforced and strengthened with the new plant fiber. It also aims to study the influence of the architecture of the RC fibers. The testing of thermal transfer by infrared thermography without contact are conducted on the composite plates. The resolution of the heat equation by finite difference with Matlab program permit the identification of the thermal diffusivity by fitting the theoretical thermogramme representation on the measures curve. The results reveal that the vegetable fibers increase the thermal performance of the plaster; that the RC fibers favor the isolation function better than the fibers of sisal and that their random distribution in the material proved to be more favorable.

The Impact of Physical Activity on Socializing Mentally Handicapped Childreninventionjournals
This research is conducted to determine socialization of individuals with moderate mental retardation by physical activity. In order to meet the needs of physical activity of individuals with mental retardation, programs including work and play are being prepared today. These games and practices are aimed on their abilities, limitations and interests. A well-planned program of physical activity can have a positive contribution to all areas of development on children with mental disabilities. In this study, which proceeds on the basis of The Focus Group Interview (FGI), a part of qualitative research strategy, 19 parents with disabled kids were interviewed. Children of parents who participated in the study have moderate mental retardation (MR) and they have been playing basketball for two days a week, swimming for one day a weekend short walking at least three times a week on a regular basis for the last two years. The study was made by Maximum Diversity Sampling as a sampling method and interview form was used as a data collection means. Verbal explanations given by parents to open-ended questions were analyzed through content analysis. Main themes of each research question were chosen by comparing a pre determined part of the creation of common themes. As a result, parents who are suffering from hyperactive or inactive children, tell that they observe a significant change in their children after doing sports. Parents who see this positive change become happy and therefore they have spare time for themselves while their kids are doing sports. Both parents and children defined the positive changes at home and social life along with sports as happiness and calmness. Parents state that they feel their kid’s sense of achievement, improved ability to make an action and communications kills. They also observe the fact that they gain acceptance in the community

Four students with learning disabilities participated in a supplemental repeated reading intervention in order to increase oral reading fluency (ORF) skills. Teachers implemented the computerized intervention with the students in an inclusive classroom during reading/language arts time. The students engaged with the computerized repeated reading program three times per week for 10 weeks. Teachers administered generalization passages once a week to determine each student’s reading skills on passages that had not been read. Study data revealed mixed results as the students increased their ORF on progress monitoring generalization passages and tended to reach their goals, but only two of the four students showed a positive level change on the computerized repeated reading intervention passages. Implications, limitations, and future research are discussed.

The article entitled Techniques and Gaps in Translation of Cultural Terms is an attempt to find out the techniques adopted in translates in cultural terms an observe gaps in the process of translation. The main purpose of this study has to evaluate the techniques of translation of cultural words and to find out the gaps. For this purpose, the researcher collected cultural terms as corpus of data for the study from Nepali cultural words and the corresponding translated words from the English language. They were categorized them into five different categories. Findings of the study shows that ten different techniques such as literal, addition, deletion, claque, back translation, borrowing, definition are to be found to have been employed in translating cultural words of the novel.
The Importance of Culture in Second and Foreign Language Learning.Bahram Kazemian
English has been designated as a source of intercultural communication among the people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. A range of linguistic and cultural theories contribute meaningful insights on the development of competence in intercultural communication. The speculations suggest the use of communicative strategies focusing on the development of learners’ efficiency in communicating language through cultural context. However, the teaching of culture in communication has not been paid due importance in a number of academic and language settings of Pakistan and Iran. This assignment study indicates problems in view of teaching English as a medium of instruction in public sector colleges of interior Sindh, Pakistan and prescribed textbooks in Iranian schools. It also aims to identify drawbacks and shortcoming in prescribed textbooks for intermediate students at college level and schools. Therefore, the assignment study recommends integration of cultural awareness into a language teaching programme for an overall achievement of competence in intercultural communication.

An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

ABSTRACT : After reviewing the related literature, this paper summarizes studies about oral interpretation
on the base of culture and pragmatics. Then the paper illustrates the function of culture and pragmatics in oral
interpretation teaching and analyzes the relationship between culture and oral interpretation as well as the
relationship between pragmatics and oral interpretation. And then it discusses about cultural and pragmatic
oral interpretation teaching, and points out pragmatics has a significant guiding to oral interpretation teaching.
Finally, it suggests that culture and pragmatics should help to facilitate oral interpretation instruction,
including the following aspects: increasing pragmatic awareness, implementing teaching in context,
emphasizing cultural teaching and employing authentic teaching materials.

I. INTRODUCTION
Nowadays, as the largest developing country in the world, China is in urgent need of high-quality
interpreters, which flourishes interpretation work. For this sense, all the foreign language universities and
international studies universities have offered oral interpretation courses. And also, these universities almost
have advanced interpretation colleges. Besides, schools of foreign languages in some comprehensive
universities offer interpretation courses, and some comprehensive universities (such as Zhongshan University)
and normal universities (such as Qufu Normal University) also have interpretation colleges. However, the
amount of high-quality interpreters who have been trained is so small that it is difficult for average graduates of
English to find a job and there is critical shortage of high level interpreters. For this case, the author argues that
English-Chinese oral interpretation instruction should be improved so that oral interpretation teaching can be
improved and quality of interpreters increased.
II. STUDIES ON ORAL INTERPRETATION
In history, interpreters’ position in society was so low that they were called “dragomen” or
“intermediaries”. At that time, interpreters were regarded as “arbitrary”, “natural bilingual people” and born
specialists special talents who were unable to be trained.” In old days, “dragomen” or “intermediaries” had such
had reputation that the government of Qing Dynasty set up School of Combined Learning in Beijing in 1862 in
order to train interpreters who took place of “dragomen” or “intermediaries”. As we all know, the production
of spoken language precedes the written language, Interpreting history is also before the translation, but
Interpretation research lags behind translation. For a long time, people always think that the written language is
superior to spoken language, especially by the influence of the ancient civilization of Greece and Rome, the
literary language has been paid attention to and become the focus of the study. For a long time, people change
the spoken language and the interpreter into a talk. However, the former belongs to the category of language,
while the later is part of translation (Chai Mingjiong, 2010) [1]. Nowadays, translation is being separated from
language and literature, becoming a new discipline. Interpretation, as a branch of translation, has attracted more
and more attention from the academic circle. Since the reform and opening up 30 years ago, especially since the
new century, more and more articles on "interpretation" have been published in the academic circles. The author
in the title input "interpretation" in chki.net, and find 6863 articles from 1980 to 2015, of which from 1980 to
1989 there are 176 articles, from 2000 to 2009 there are 1956 articles, and from 2010 to 2015 there are 4659
articles. As Figure 1 shows:

Although the articles on "interpretation" do not fully limit to the translation of the two languages of
English and Chinese, but from Figure 1, we can see the academic circle’s attention to interpretation. Especially
in the first 15 years in the new century, that is, 2000-2015, related articles published takes up 96.39% of the
amount, being as 26.67 times many as the sum of 1980-1999. Only from the quantitative perspective, can we see
that the number of articles on interpretation is large indeed, and research topics are also more extensive, from
theory to practice, from teaching strategies to teaching models, from interpretation skills to interpretation
training, from corpus construction to network assisted instruction, from the curriculum offer to the teaching
reform, and from interpreting elements to interpreting notes, etc., which undoubtedly plays a positive role in
interpreting teaching and research in our country. However, There are few articles on interpreting from the
perspective of culture or language, And the articles which integrate culture and pragmatics into oral
interpretation are not more than 40, not taking up 1% of the amount.
Although some articles discussed the interpretation of cultural context and pragmatic meaning, which
has certain positive role in interpreting teaching, but they seldom analyze the relationship of culture and
pragmatics, and seldom explore the origin of East and west culture. The author believes that culture and
pragmatics are important factors that can not be ignored in the process of interpretation, and even the key
factors. To a certain extent, the quality of the interpretation depends on whether the interpreter can find meaning
connection on the fulcrum of the two cultures to achieve the best pragmatic effect. Therefore, that interpreters
only know English and Chinese languages have different cultural facts is not enough, and they should be aware
of the cultural origin of cultural differences, and fundamentally solve the problem of cross culture. On the other
hand, culture and pragmatics have connections and distinctions. Cultural differences can lead to pragmatic
failure and pragmatic mistakes are not caused by the cultural context. Therefore, we should pay attention to
cultural and pragmatic utility in interpreting.
III. THE EFFECT OF CULTURE AND PRAGMATICS IN INTERPRETATION
Professor Ming Deming points out that “Interpretation refers to a verbal expression, which
will transform the information which is heard accurately and quickly from into another language, and
achieve the aim to transfer and exchange information, and which is a basic tool of communication on
which humans rely in cross-cultural, cross ethnic interaction activities” (Luo Xuanmin, 2008) [2].
The interpreters are not those who only have knowledge of English and Chinese. Besides
being familiar with the two languages of English and Chinese, interpreters also should know cultural
differences between the two languages, grasp the pragmatic rules, so as to achieve ”pragmatic
equivalent translation" during the interpreting process, and effectively achieve the purpose of
communication.
Culture and Interpretation
Culture and translation are closely related. Eugene Nida, American translation theorist pointed out:
"translation is communication between two cultures. For truly successful translation, familiarity with two
cultures may be even more important than the mastery of two languages because words makes sense only in the
cultural background in which they play roles" (Chen Baorong, 2008)[3]. “Culture and its communication are
the origin of translation occurrence. Translation is the product of culture; thus, the former can’t do without the
latter”(Wang Kefei,1994)[4]. “Translation is comparison between languages, and the interpretation is conveying

thought.” There are two kinds of interpretation. One is the code interpretation, which is to change a language
(L1) into another language (L2) according to the meanings of words. The other is to interpret L1 into L2 after
L1 is understood. The interpreter will indicates the original cultural characters, shows the image and habits of
original language, at the same time, he or she also need to take into account the cultural habits of the target
audience to implement conversion of the original information according to the actual situation and the specific
context, especially those words of carrying a certain cultural connotation (Wang Yuliang, 2009)[5].
It is evident that culture influences translation activities by thinking. Western culture is influenced by
Christian culture so deeply that the western nation focus on masculine and straightforward character, talking
directly, not including twists and turns. However, the national character of our country, Influenced by
Confucianism, Tao and Buddhism, is partial to feminine and tender, paying attention to introversion. This
cultural difference which is reflected in the language style is that in English, what is important and stressed is
first expressed, and then explanations or additional conditions. On the contrary, generally speaking, Chinese,
who are very particular about the right and proper, first explain causes and then give the result. At the same time,
to express their rational and restrained behavior, Chinese people often explain the background first, and then
make their request, taking the method of convolution type (Zhao Xiufeng, 2009)[6]. Thus, the difference of
thinking is reflected evidently in English and Chinese interpretation. Cultural context influences interpretation.
For example, “lay the cards on the table” can be interpreted into “da kai chuangzi shuo liang hua” (frankly
speaking) in a certain situation.
British and American people focus on rationality, emphasize on logical thinking, and thus, transitional
words become an indispensable language link. Therefore, when English and Chinese interpretation is being
implemented, if interpreters are limited to Chinese thinking, the sentence will be monotonous and lack
coherence so that a series of simple sentences are out of tune with native English. For example,
(1) The teacher held a book in her hand, she walked into the classroom quietly, nobody noticed her.
This is a typical run-on sentence, in which the clauses are separated by commas. In this way, it seems
to be converged, or integrated, but in fact, not only punctuations are used improperly, but also does it show a
strong trace of Chinese thinking. If we think in English, instead of Chinese, we translate it into a complex
sentence such as:
(2) Book in hand, so quietly did the teacher walk into the classroom that nobody noticed her.
Sentence (2) shows, the sentence structure is interlocking, compact and powerful, natural and smooth.
Therefore, Chinese students need to know the differences between the English thought pattern and Chinese one
so as to organize their views and ideas according to the westerners’ thinking way and textual structure. In this
way, they keep an eye on psychological schema of "target readers" while interpreting or translating.
Another example is “shiji zhi jiao, zhongguo waijiao kongqian huoyue.”Lots of Chinese students translate
the sentence into the English sentence “At the turn of the century, China’s diplomacy is most active”. This
sentence structure is common in Chinese, but for westerners, it is too Chinglish, for in English the subject of
“active” should be a living thing (who has life); therefore, it is not proper to diplomacy with active. It is
idiomatic if it is interpreted into “The turn of the century finds China most active on the diplomatic arena.”
Besides, it conveys the meaning of the original sentence accurately.
Westerners like to praise others with the words “You look wonderful today!” And the interlocutor is pleasant to
say “So do you! Thanks a lot.” and the like. On the other hand, The Chinese people are not used to this way,
especially between the opposite sexes.
Pragmatics and Interpretation
Pragmatics is the study of the understanding and use of language, the learning of property and
appropriateness of language (He Ziran, 1997:2-5) [7]. Pragmatics focuses on the larger part of the conversation,
which regards speech as a dynamic process and analyzes speech closely based on the context.
According to relevance theory, language communication is a purposeful and intentional activity, and
its purpose is to convey the speaker's intention. Communicative activities involve two intentions: informative
intention and communicative intention. The speaker always expresses information in a straight and clear way
expression so that the listener can understand their intention. In order to catch the speaker's intention, the
listener must put the information into the clear mode of reasoning for deductive reasoning. The important
evidence of purpose of deductive reasoning is to obtain the maximum relevance of information and context, and
the best relevance is derived from the best contextual effect; the more successful people’s thinking of the

utterance and the context hypothesis is, the more clear the inherent relationship between words is clear, and thus
thinking and reasoning process does not need too much effort for good effect in the context, so that people
correctly understand the utterance and make the communication successful. The principle of relevance is
actually the pragmatic principles of discourse, which has become the new theory of pragmatic translation.
How should pragmatic translation deal with the practical problems in translation? The relevance
theory emphasizes that people's mutual understanding is a kind of “mutual manifestness”. If people are able to
cognize a certain thing, it can be manifested to the object in translation. So when the translator thinks that the
literal meaning of the original text is the author's original intention, he (she) will certainly do the right
translation. As for the author's implied intent, a translator should determine the author's real intentions through
all sorts of relevant information by reasoning, and to give "manifestness" in the process of translation. If he or
she thinks hat readers cannot get the meaning through the literal translation, the translator / interpreter employs
free translation. For example, the Chinese slogan “gaogao xingxing shangban que, pingping anan huijia lai” can
not be literally translated into "go to work happily, go home in peace." And it should be translated into “Safety is
first” He Ziran (1997) even translates it into “Good luck” [7]. The latter two fully reveal the context of the
original text and the intention. Pragmatics also emphasizes the contextual effect and finds the relevance between
the original text and the context in order to grasp the author's real intention. For example, when you visit a site,
if the accompany says, “No hard cap, no entry”, you can translate it into the Chinese “Qing daishang
anquanmao” ( Please put on your safety helmet.)
Thus it can be seen that translation is a cross-cultural communication means, and proper expression
and accurate comprehension of utterance meaning is done in a different context. Therefore, only understanding
the literal meaning of the language is far from enough, and the interpreter must infer the real intention or
implication of language properly according to different context and custom of another culture.
IV. CULTURE AND PRAGMATICS VS INTERPRETATION INSTRUCTION
The guiding role of pragmatics in interpretation
Pragmatics is becoming more and more important in real interpretation because of the pragmatic
equivalence principle, which can take care of the reader's cognition and effectively realize cross cultural
communication. Now, the discussion on how to carry out the equivalent translation in interpretation is as
follows:
(1) (Please walk fast, and ahead is one of Wuxi’s scenic spots! ) Xian du wei kuai!
The sooner you see, the happier you will be! (Equivalent translation)
It is what a guide said to Canadian tour group that was visiting Wuxi, Jiangsu, China. in brackets is
the premise of the original text. “Xian du wei kuai!” can interpreted into “to consider it a great pleasure to be
among the first to read” according to A Chinese-English Dictionary. It is improper to be employed here,
however, for the context is changed, not “read a book”, but “view and admire the scenery”. Therefore, the
sentence “the sooner you see, the happier you will be!” is concise, catchy, rhythmic and agitative, representing
the language function of the original language (Chen Hongwei, 1998:130) [8].
(2) In the front of the boat is put up a long rudder, whose shape is just like Guan Yu’s falchion with Green
Dragon.(literal translation)
In the front of the boat is put up a long rudder which is shaped like the knife on the westerner’s dinner
table. ((Equivalent translation)
In addition, pragmatic translation is more common in the diet culture. Chinese like to use "four word
phrases", while English like to equivalent translation, such as “Chickens Steamed in Water Melon”, “Stir-fried
Shrimps with Peas” and “Stewed Potatoes with Mushrooms”, etc.
This shows that the Chinese diet name pays more attention to the beauty of the name, while English is
more emphasis on the presentation of its information content.
The Enlightenment of culture and pragmatics to the teaching of interpretation
With the reform of College English teaching, the academic circles have come to realize the importance
of improving students' intercultural and pragmatic competence. According to the survey (Gu Tongqing, 2003)[9],
the pragmatic competence of college students and graduate students in our country is rather low, and the high
level of grammatical competence does not mean that pragmatic competence is also very high. There are two
main reasons for the low pragmatic competence: one is the negative transfer of the mother tongue, the other is
the lack of the knowledge of the target language. Therefore, it is very necessary to take effective measures to
improve the pragmatic competence of students in the interpretation teaching.

(1) Enhancing pragmatic awareness
Pragmatics is a general course for English majors and the undergraduate students, especially non
English majors have little contact. Therefore, teachers should consciously introduce some pragmatic knowledge
in teaching, especially the Relevance Theory and the Cooperation Norms to improve the students' ability of
pragmatic inference. At the same time, teachers should let students understand that the translation is not always
"literal translation", in some cases it is only "equivalent translation" that is proper.
(2) Emphasis on context teaching
Pragmatics emphasizes context terribly; thus, pragmatics can be regarded as the study of meaning in
context, studying suitability and appropriateness of language in different conditions. The words which are cut
from the context may cause ambiguity. Therefore, teachers should let the students learn to master the range of
collocation and usage of words in different contexts, to improve the students' cognitive pragmatic ability. Not
only the meaning of a word or a phrase depends on the context, but also the meaning of a sentence also depends
on the context. Therefore, the context teaching helps train students’ ability to utilize language.
(3)Attaching importance to culture teaching
Teachers should pay special attention to teaching some of the following aspects in the teaching
process: custom and culture, differences of speech act and understanding speech acts between Chinese and
English, taboo topics in English, differences between English and Chinese cultural values and pragmatic
principles, and the discourse structure and rhetorical differences caused by difference of English native speakers’
thought pattern.
(4) Increasing the authenticity of teaching materials
Teachers should use authentic materials as they can, selecting materials from the actual interpretation,
or contrasting its vocabulary, structure, rhetoric and style with those of Chinese, to find significant differences.
At the same time, students learn about social and cultural factors of English speaking countries using through
the Internet.
V. CONCLUSION
Interpretation and culture are closely related to pragmatics, and interpreting is inseparable from the
culture and pragmatic participation and contextual appropriateness. In fact, cultural awareness and pragmatic
competence are an important part of language ability; thus, interpretation teaching should emphasizes
cultivating cultural awareness and pragmatic competence, the use of context and the use of authentic materials.
On the other hand, the improvement of students' cultural awareness and pragmatic competence helps to improve
the quality of interpretation teaching and the ability of interpretation.
