The document discusses a study that explored factors affecting college students' food choices and the effectiveness of different interventions at impacting those choices. The study provided students with either social marketing promotions, educational events, or both, to encourage choosing "Real Food" as defined by the Real Food Challenge. Results from pre- and post-surveys were analyzed to understand differences in how students ranked important food choice factors and their assessment of the relationship between personal food choices and sustainability. The goal was to identify the most effective interventions for encouraging students to choose more "Real Food" and help the Real Food Challenge meet its goal of shifting $1 billion in dining purchases by 2020.
This document discusses advocacy and resource mobilization for nutrition implementation. It notes that malnutrition claims millions of lives annually and costs the global economy billions. Investing $7 billion annually could save lives and reduce malnutrition cases. Resource mobilization involves strategic planning, advocacy, and negotiation to obtain funds, human resources, and goods for nutrition programs. Advocacy tools like PROFILES and nutrition costing are used to demonstrate the costs of inaction and benefits of improved nutrition to decision-makers. An effective advocacy strategy involves identifying problems, stakeholders, building coalitions, making the nutrition case, identifying opportunities, drafting an advocacy plan, implementation, and monitoring progress. Sustainable reductions in malnutrition require broad, effective advocacy combined with resource mobilization.

Savings groups plus provides a review of the evidence on savings-led microfinance paired with cross-sectoral development initiatives. The evidence base is limited in size and mixed in outcomes. For health interventions, positive impacts were found for health education and demand creation, while behavioral changes showed mixed or promising results. Food security and nutrition outcomes were mostly positive. Impacts on child protection, well-being, and education were mixed. Gender equality and women's empowerment saw some positive results. More rigorous research with improved study designs is needed to draw stronger conclusions.
This chapter discusses strategies for effectively communicating with target audiences. It focuses on a program called Together Rx that provides discounted prescription drugs. To reach uninsured Americans, the program used various outreach methods like in-person events, websites, and traditional media. Marketing research was also used to understand the diverse uninsured population and refine communication tactics. The program measured its success based on enrollment numbers, savings, and brand awareness to evaluate the effectiveness of its integrated communication campaign.
Nepal experienced rapid reductions in maternal and child undernutrition from 1996-2011, despite civil war and political instability. The prevalence of stunting in children under 2 fell from 48% to 27%, and maternal underweight fell from 28% to 20%. These gains were achieved through increased access to health services, household asset growth, improved education levels, and sanitation access. Lessons learned include the importance of improved service delivery, multi-sector collaboration, and addressing social and gender norms to sustain nutrition progress.

This document discusses the work of the Partnership for Prevention, a nonprofit organization that advocates for evidence-based disease prevention and health promotion policies. It describes how the Partnership produced principles for prevention-centered health reform, helped develop model language for public health legislation, and identified nine components of an effective prevention standard. The Partnership's efforts contributed to initial success in getting prevention priorities addressed in early health reform discussions, though cost concerns, political factors, and compromise were also influences.
This document discusses using social marketing approaches to address childhood obesity at multiple levels. It provides an overview of ecological models in public health and describes how the Chicago 5-4-3-2-1 Go! program applied social marketing strategies to raise awareness of healthy behaviors and local opportunities for physical activity and nutrition among parents and children in the community. Lessons from this initiative demonstrate the effectiveness of social marketing campaigns in promoting policy changes and reducing behavioral risk factors for obesity through culturally relevant messages and multi-pronged community outreach.
This report summarizes research into how accountability mechanisms contribute to the quality of humanitarian aid. Case studies in Kenya and Myanmar found that participation and feedback helped agencies understand needs and target assistance more effectively. It also built trust between aid organizations and communities. Complaints mechanisms highlighted issues and participation in project design and monitoring improved relevance, efficiency, and sustainability. However, the use of accountability in practice remains inconsistent. The report recommends routinely implementing accountability, further documenting practices, and adopting the research methodology to strengthen humanitarian responses.

Evaluations of Gender-Integrated Reproductive Health Interventions: A Review ...MEASURE Evaluation
This document summarizes a review of gender-integrated reproductive health intervention evaluations. The review examined 23 studies and found that most were conducted in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, using quantitative methods. Few studies explicitly discussed a theory of change or included power calculations in their sampling. Most collected data from only one sex and few used validated gender scales. Common gender-related outcomes examined attitudes towards gender roles and decision-making. The conclusion calls for more mixed methods studies that integrate gender considerations throughout design, sampling, and measurement.

It describes how the campaign was nationally defined but locally executed through 10 regional offices, and how partnerships with other agencies and organizations were crucial to reaching the target audience through various channels including the Medicare website, mailings, a call center, media campaigns, and local events. The campaign was deemed a success, with 75% of beneficiaries pleased with the new Part D program.
OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY prevalence has increased substantially over the past decades, affecting 2.1 billion people worldwide and causing 3.4 million deaths globally.1 Currently, 42 million children are overweight or obese—the result of a staggering 47.1 percent rise in prevalence between 1980 and 2013.2 No longer exclusive to affluent societies, obesity has reached alarmingly high levels in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).3 In fact, the number of individuals who are overweight or obese (1.9 billion) has now surpassed the 794 million people who do not get enough calories.4 Nearly half of all overweight children under 5 years of age now live in Asia, and a further 25 percent are found in Africa.
The aim of the CMAM surge model is to strengthen the capacity of government health systems to effectively manage increased caseloads of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and moderate acute malnutrition (MAM), during predictable emergencies without undermining ongoing health and nutrition systems strengthening efforts. It is based on one of the fundamental principles of CMAM; that early detection of malnutrition leads to improved treatment outcomes and fewer cases of SAM, as children are treated before their malnutrition becomes severe.

This document summarizes a study evaluating the long-term impacts of agricultural technologies in Bangladesh. It finds:
1. Agricultural technologies like vegetable and fish farming can improve nutrition by increasing micronutrient supplies and incomes, but impacts depend on implementation.
2. A 10-year follow up found individual fishpond technologies significantly increased household consumption and assets, while group technologies had smaller impacts.
3. Nutrition improved most where technologies engaged women's groups, indicating the importance of intrahousehold dynamics.
4. A new project will evaluate gender gaps in asset control from agricultural projects to identify best practices for benefiting both women and men.
The document summarizes findings from impact evaluations of social protection programs conducted by J-PAL MENA. It discusses how randomized evaluations are used to understand the impact of social programs and policies. It then reviews evidence on the impact of different social protection programs, including cash transfers versus in-kind transfers, conditional versus unconditional cash transfers, and the effects of program design features like targeting methods and transfer modalities. Key findings discussed include that in-kind transfers can impact prices, labeling programs can be as effective as formal conditionality, and conditional cash transfers may have unintended consequences like increasing child marriage.

Using Demographic Data to Forecast Contraceptive Implant Demand Underestimate...JSI
This poster was presented by Laila Akhlaghi at the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) in Kigali, Rwanda in November 2018.
The Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) Initiative was launched in 2012 to address high unmet need for contraception, especially in low and middle income countries. Increasing access to long acting hormonal contraceptives (LARCs), and specifically hormonal contraceptive implants is an important strategy for achieving increases in modern contraceptive prevalence rates (mCPR).
Increasing access to contraceptive implants and ensuring demand is being met begins with accurate forecasting. This step precedes the process of supply planning, procurement, and distribution of these goods to service delivery points (SDPs) that make them available as a choice for women.
Several methods can be used in forecasting demand for contraceptives. How closely does contraceptive implant demand estimated from survey and demographics data align with actual data on insertions collected from service delivery points through eLMIS, LMIS, or DHIS II data?
The findings indicate that demographic estimates underestimate actual consumption for long-term methods. This has implications for the use of survey and demographic data (including CYPs), for forecasting demand for contraceptive implants.
The results also emphasize the importance of establishing and strengthening eLMIS systems that collect supply chain data and the use of this data for operational and management decisions to improve performance. Understanding true demand at the last mile of the supply chain, is an essential data element for managing supply chains. Without this information, supply chain managers have limited ability to increase performance and efficiency of their systems.

Can vouchers help move health systems toward universal health coverage? Ben Bellows
Universal health coverage is an aspirational goal "to ensure that all people obtain the health services they need without suffering financial hardship when paying for them." To move toward greater health coverage, low-income countries can foster health systems that increase utilization, improve scope of services, and reduce financial costs to care. Voucher programs operate on both the demand and supply sides to target subsidies to beneficiaries, who in the absence of the subsidy, would likely not afford the healthcare. Governments that create these programs and take them to scale can expect to see greater utilization of priority health services by disadvantaged and can protect low-income populations from catastrophic health expenditure. As national risk pools mature, these voucher programs can become the foundation for larger, more comprehensive health purchasing agencies that cover the whole population with high quality, low cost healthcare.
HFG Project Brief - Improving Health Finance and Governance Expands Access to...HFG Project
The USAID Health Finance and Governance Project works in over 25 countries to improve health systems financing and governance, expand access to essential services like maternal and child health care, and progress toward universal health coverage. In Burundi, the project strengthened the management and organizational capacity of the National HIV/AIDS Program. In Cote d'Ivoire, the project helped develop the country's first post-conflict strategic plan to address health workforce issues and better support HIV care. The project also piloted an integrated HIV service delivery model in Ukraine.
India faces high levels of malnutrition that impact over half its children and cause substantial economic losses. The Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program aims to address malnutrition's causes but has had limited impact due to focusing on increasing coverage rather than improving service quality or changing family behaviors. ICDS must be reformed to emphasize disease prevention, nutrition education, and targeting the most vulnerable groups in order to realize its potential to reduce malnutrition.

The document discusses USAID's nutrition approach, outlining its principles, components, target areas, and role of operating units. It provides context on the global burden of undernutrition and its causes. It then describes the recent shift in global and USAID nutrition strategies from vertical to integrated approaches, from under-fives targeting to the 1000-day window, from nutrient-specific to diet quality measures, from recuperative to preventive focus, and from health platforms to multi-sectoral delivery. It poses questions about reaching the 30% undernutrition reduction goal and delivering comprehensive nutrition interventions at scale through integrated frameworks.
Can community action improve equity for maternal health and how does it do soHFG Project
Efforts to work with civil society to strengthen community participation and action for health are particularly important in Gujarat, India, given that the state has resources and capacity, but faces challenges in ensuring that services reach those most in need. To contribute to the knowledge base on accountability and maternal health, this study examines the equity effects of community action for maternal health led by Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) on facility deliveries. It then examines the underlying implementation processes with implications for strengthening accountability of maternity care across three districts of Gujarat, India. Community action for maternal health entailed NGOs a) working with community collectives to raise awareness about maternal health entitlements, b) supporting community monitoring of outreach government services, and c) facilitating dialogue with government providers and authorities with report cards based on community monitoring of maternal health.

Factors that influence performance of community health workers (CHWs) delivering health services are not well understood. A recent logic model proposed categories of support from both health sector and communities influence CHW performance and program outcomes. This logic model has been used to review a growth monitoring program delivered by CHWs in Honduras, known as Atención Integral a la Niñez en la Comunidad (AIN-C). A retrospective review of AIN-C was conducted through a document desk review and supplemented with in-depth interviews. Documents were systematically coded using the categories from the logic model, and gaps were addressed through interviews. Authors reviewed coded data for each category to analyze program details and outcomes as well as identify potential issues and gaps in the logic model.
Patient organizations are an increasingly powerful voice in helping shape health policy. However, a new analysis found that there’s often minimal transparency among these groups - and many have a great deal of industry backing.
A systematic review published in BMJ showed that although up to 83% of patient advocacy groups received industry funding, only about a quarter disclosed that fact on their websites.
The document discusses using mobile health (mHealth) technologies to improve maternal and child health outcomes. Lessons Learned In Using the Most Significant Change Technique in EvaluationMEASURE Evaluation
This document summarizes lessons learned from using the Most Significant Change (MSC) technique in evaluations conducted in five countries. The MSC technique involves collecting stories from participants about significant changes resulting from an intervention, analyzing the stories to identify themes, and sharing the stories with stakeholders. The document discusses strengths and limitations of MSC, provides examples of its application in different programs and countries, and identifies lessons learned. Key lessons are that MSC generates rich qualitative data but requires careful facilitation and training, and follow-up interviews can further strengthen learning from the approach.
Malaria Data Quality and Use in Selected Centers of Excellence in Madagascar:...MEASURE Evaluation
This document summarizes the results of a cross-sectional baseline survey assessing malaria data quality and use in health centers in Madagascar that were selected as Centers of Excellence to improve data practices. The survey found that while reporting completeness and timeliness were high, data accuracy remained an issue. Baseline performance on data quality indicators was similar between the intervention sites that would implement Centers of Excellence and control sites. The implementation of Centers of Excellence aims to drive improvements in data quality, analysis, and use for decision-making in Madagascar.
Evaluating National Malaria Programs’ Impact in Moderate- and Low-Transmissio...MEASURE Evaluation
The framework highlights the importance of routine surveillance data and confirmed malaria incidence for evaluating national malaria programs in low- and moderate-transmission settings. Process evaluations assess program performance and coverage to determine when impact evaluations are needed. Impact evaluations then measure reductions in malaria burden using methods like interrupted time series and constructed controls while accounting for other factors. Key challenges include defining intervention maturity and coverage thresholds needed to achieve measurable impact. The framework emphasizes continuous evaluation along the implementation and impact pathways to guide program decisions.
Improved Performance of the Malaria Surveillance, Monitoring, and Evaluation ...MEASURE Evaluation
MEASURE Evaluation's support between 2015-2018 likely contributed to significant improvements in Madagascar's malaria surveillance system. Key improvements included: 1) availability of guiding documents, 2) increased completeness and timeliness of facility and community reporting, and 3) establishment of a culture of data dissemination and use. Data quality, reporting rates, and staff capacity all significantly increased over this period according to the assessment. Continued support is needed as Madagascar works towards malaria elimination.

ABDOMINAL TRAUMA in pediatrics part one.drhasanrajab
Abdominal trauma in pediatrics refers to injuries or damage to the abdominal organs in children. It can occur due to various causes such as falls, motor vehicle accidents, sports-related injuries, and physical abuse. Children are more vulnerable to abdominal trauma due to their unique anatomical and physiological characteristics. Signs and symptoms include abdominal pain, tenderness, distension, vomiting, and signs of shock. Diagnosis involves physical examination, imaging studies, and laboratory tests. Management depends on the severity and may involve conservative treatment or surgical intervention. Prevention is crucial in reducing the incidence of abdominal trauma in children.

Private Sector Involvement in Family Planning and Socio-economic Disparities in Modern Contraceptive Use
1. Effect of an expansion in private sector provision of contraceptive supplies on horizontal inequity in modern contraceptive use: evidence from Africa and Asia David Hotchkiss, Deepali Godha, and Mai Do 9 July 2011
This study was supported by USAID’s MEASURE Evaluation PRH Project. I would like to acknowledge my co-authors, Deepali Godha and Mai Do.
Very little research on this issue – one exception is a recent study by Agha and Do based on DHS data from five countries where there has been an expansion of the role of the private sector. The study found no evidence to support the hypothesis that the increased role of the private sector leads to increased disparities in contraceptive use, but the study did not control for the need for family planning.
This was done using the indirect method of standardization, as suggested by the World Bank, where need-standardized modern contraceptive use is obtained by adding the overall sample mean of the indicator of modern contraceptive use to the difference between actual and need-predicted modern contraceptive use. The method of indirect standardization “corrects” the actual distribution by comparing it with the distribution that would be observed if all women had not their levels of the non-need variables but the same mean values of the non-need variables as the entire population. The concentration index of need-standardized contraceptive use provides a measure of horizontal equity. Limitation: study does not attribute changes in equity to changes in the role of the private sector
There were often substantial differences between actual and need-standardized probabilities
