Gatenberg’s printing press took over
3years to build. Each paper takes to print
is only about 21 seconds. By 1500,
printing presses in operation
throughout Western Europe had already
produced more than twenty million
volumes. In the 16th century, with presses
spreading further afield, their output rose
tenfold to an estimated 150 to 200 million

How Printing Press work?
15 November 1500 5
In Gutenberg's printing
press, movable type was
arranged over a flat
wooden plate called the
lower platen. Ink was
applied to the type, and a
sheet of paper was laid
on top. An upper platen
was brought down to
meet the lower platen.
The two plates pressed
the paper and type
together, creating sharp
images on the paper.
