WHAT IS INTERNETWORKING?
INTERNETWORKING
IS THE COMMUNICATION AND CONNECTIVITY OF TWO OR
MORE COMPUTER NETWORKS USING THROUGH AN INTRANET
USING END SYSTEMS AND INTERNETWORKING UNIT OR A RELAY.
INTRANET - a corporate internet that provides key Internet
applications. It is usually isolated and self-contained within an
organization.
END SYSTEM – a device attached to a network.
(Personal Computers, Mobile Devices, Consoles etc.)
INTERNETWORKING UNIT – a device used to connect end systems to
perform create and establish a secured network.
WHAT IS INTERNETWORKING?
WHAT ARE VMS USED FOR?
The following are the overall requirements for an internetworking facility :
1. Provide a link between networks. At minimum, a physical and link control connection is
needed.
2. Provide for the routing and delivery of data between processes on different networks.
3. Provide an accounting service that keeps track of the use of the various networks and
routers and maintains status information.
4. Provide the services just listed without requiring modifications to the networking
architecture of constituent networks.
WHAT IT IS FOR?
WHAT ARE VMS USED FOR?
• Allow network isolation when needed which is critical to performance as
problems is contained within the network.
• Internetwork can be an effective defense against a server intrusion.
• Provides centralized support and troubleshooting capabilities within the
internetwork.
• Contain the amount of traffics that are sent within the network system.
BENEFITS OF A SECURED
INTERNETWORK
WHAT ARE VMS USED FOR?
Its goal is to establish boundaries for the
dissemination of routing information.
• Useful for security administration
• Provides services such as billing and
account management.

IP ADDRESSING
WHAT ARE VMS USED FOR?
There are two parts involving an IP address:
Network ID - comprising the first three numbers of the address.
Host ID - the fourth number in the address.
Example:
192.168.1.1 (wherein NID is 192.168.1 and the final number is
the HID which is 1)
127.0.0.1 (wherein NID is 127.0.0 and the final number is
the HID which is 1)
IP ADDRESS STRUCTURE
WHAT ARE VMS USED FOR?
External IP – The IP address you see on our home page. AKA public IP.
Example:
24.156.99.202
Internal IP – Local addresses that routers use as a default. AKA private IP.
Example:
192.168.1.1

TYPES OF AN IP ADDRESS
WHAT ARE VMS USED FOR?
• Private address is just for your router, your network, and you.
• Blocks of addresses can be used by a private network.
• Internet routes internet activity connected to the assigned device’s
public IP address only.
WHAT ARE PRIVATE IP ADDRESS
FOR?
WHAT ARE VMS USED FOR?
DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM (DNS)
• Makes the modern internet possible.
• Pairs website names you can easily remember with IP addresses that
computers can use.
• DNS servers sit between your browser and the site you want to visit.
WHAT ARE VMS USED FOR?
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF AN IP
ADDRESS?
• Handles connections between devices which then sends and receives
information across the network.
• Uniquely identifies every device on the internet.
• Allow computing devices (such as PCs and tablets) to communicate with
addresses like websites and streaming services.
• Acts like a return address on postal mail.
• Mark the real-world location of your device.
