PROGRESS
Purpose:
 To establish how to monitor and then compare actual achievements
against those planned during the project.
 To provide a forecast for the project objectives and the project's
continued viability.
 To be able to control any unacceptable deviations.

MANAGING BY EXCEPTION
The purpose is to provide very efficient use of senior
management time as it reduces senior managers’ time
burden without removing their control by ensuring
decisions are made at the right level in the organization.

TOLERANCES
The permissible deviation above and below a plan’s target for time
and cost without escalating the deviation to the next level of
management.
There may also be tolerance levels for quality, scope, benefit and
risk. Tolerance is applied at project, stage and team levels.

• Decision points/ flexible partitions
• Managed by the Project Manager
• Use of Management stages is MANDATORY
• Number of stages is flexible – Minimum two
• Depends on the scale and risk
• There is no defined length of a management stage but
factors that influence it are: planning horizon, technical
stages, alignment with programme activities, and the
level of risk.
