Agenda History of PRINCE2 Why has it changed? Fundamental differences between 2005 & 2009 What the changes mean for students Timescales for changeover Any questions?
History of PRINCE2 PRINCE used in UK Public Sector since 1989 Became PRINCE2 in 1996 Nowadays used in Public & Private Sectors both in UK and abroad Subject to periodic updates by the OGC to keep the methodology in line with Industry Requirements
Why has it changed? The 2005 manual was considered too bulky Some of the terminology was confusing There was a need to acknowledge new business practices/technologies The methodology needed to integrate with other OGC Products More consideration was needed for the soft aspects of project management
Fundamental Differences between 2005 & 2009 Manual condensed from over 450 pages to 325 pages Amount of repetition has been reduced Sub-process numbers have been removed There are now 2 manuals: Managing Successful Projects Directing Successful Projects

Fundamental Differences between 2005 & 2009 Terminology aligns much better with the other products within the OGC suite
Fundamental Differences between 2005 & 2009 New Business Practices/Technologies are acknowledged Documents have been given clearer/more modern names More examples in the manual of hi-tech projects Some subject areas have been made less prescriptive and more flexible References to ISO have been removed
Fundamental Differences between 2005 & 2009 The softer aspects of Project Management are better catered for The “Tailoring” section gives advice on adapting to different project cultures
What the Changes Mean for Students The Exam format has changed as well as the manual The 2005 qualification is still valid Most advertised vacancies don’t specify the version of PRINCE2 We teach the subjects that the 2005 manual doesn’t do well “properly” on the course anyway! A 2005 student will easily get to grips with 2009 in a working environment No upgrade is needed to the 2009 methodology – 2005 students will need to sit a 1 hour “Refresh” exam in 5 years
Timescales for changeover First 2009 Course to Run Week Commencing 5 th October Current Plan to then run 2009 format on Alternate Courses Will allow bedding-in of new exam format Some students still requesting 2005 Returning 2005 students should attend 2005 course Pre-Course Reading for 2009 version available now
