PRINCE2: 2009 Principles

Continued business justification A PRINCE2 project has continued business justification

Learn from experience PRINCE2 project teams learn from previous experience
(lessons are sought, recorded and acted upon throughout the
                                   life of the project)
Defined roles & responsibilities A PRINCE2 project has defined and agreed roles and
responsibilities with an organization structure that engages the
business, user and supplier stakeholder interests
Manage by stages A PRINCE2 project is planned, monitored and controlled on a
                                   stage-by-stage basis
Manage by exception A PRINCE2 project has defined tolerances for each project
objective to establish limits of delegated authority
Focus on products A PRINCE2 project focuses on the definition and delivery of
products, in particular their quality requirements
Tailor to suit the project PRINCE2 is tailored to suit the project’s environment, size,
environment complexity, importance, capability and risk
                                                                                                                            10

PRINCE2 Themes

Business Establish mechanisms to judge whether the project is (and Why?
Case remains) desirable, viable and achievable as a means to
support decision-making in its (continued) investment.

Organization Define and establish the project’s structure of Who?
               accountability and responsibilities.
Quality Define and implement the means by which the project will What?
create and verify products that are fit-for-purpose.
Plans Facilitate communication and control by defining the means How? How much?
               of delivering the products When?
Risk Identify, assess and control uncertainty and, as a result, What if?
improve the ability of the project to succeed.
Change Identify, assess and control any potential and approved What’s the impact
               changes to baselines.
Progress Establish mechanisms to monitor and compare actual Where are we now?
achievements against those planned in order to provide a Where are we going?
forecast for the project objectives, including its continued
               viability.

PRINCE2 versus Body of
   Knowledge (e.g. PMI)

PRINCE2 Body of Knowledge

A project management method. A broad collection of ‘good practices’ for
                                           project management.

Prescriptive. Non-prescriptive.

An integrated set of processes and Each topic area can be referred to in
themes (they are not isolated silos that isolation of others.
can be selectively applied).

Covers all project management roles. Targeted at Project Managers.

Does not cover interpersonal skills. Covers interpersonal skills.

PRINCE2 versus Body of
      Knowledge (e.g. PMI)

• The differences between PRINCE2 (a method) and a BoK make them
    highly complementary.
• PRINCE2 provides a framework of what needs to be done, by who and
    when.
• The BoK provides a range of techniques of how those things can be done.
• Tailoring PRINCE2 if the organization is aligned to any particular BoK (e.g.
the Project Management Institute – PMI Project Management Body of
Knowledge Guide – PMBOK and its superstructure standards) should
    include:
     • Agreeing a single set of terms to apply. For example, in the Project
Management Institute’s Body of Knowledge the Project Sponsor is
        equivalent to PRINCE2’s Executive
     • Aligning PRINCE2’s management products with any management
products recommended by the BoK. For example, the Project Charter
in PMBOK is equivalent to PRINCE2’s Project Brief.
                                                                                                   14
Based on OGC PRINCE2™ material, unless otherwise stated.
Tailoring PRINCE2

• Embedding: Done by the organization to adopt
  PRINCE2
• Tailoring: Done by the project management team to
adapt the method to the context of the specific project

                                                                                              15
© Crown copyright 2009. Reproduced under licence from Cabinet Office.
Tailoring PRINCE2

• Applying the principles (NOT tailored)
• Adapting the themes
• Applying the organisation’s terms and language
• Adapting the management products
• Adapting the roles
• Adapting the processes

PRINCE2 versus Bodyof Knowledge (e.g. PMI) • The differences between PRINCE2 (a method) and a BoK make them highly complementary. • PRINCE2 provides a framework of what needs to be done, by who and when. • The BoK provides a range of techniques of how those things can be done. • Tailoring PRINCE2 if the organization is aligned to any particular BoK (e.g. the Project Management Institute – PMI Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide – PMBOK and its superstructure standards) should include: • Agreeing a single set of terms to apply. For example, in the Project Management Institute’s Body of Knowledge the Project Sponsor is equivalent to PRINCE2’s Executive • Aligning PRINCE2’s management products with any management products recommended by the BoK. For example, the Project Charter in PMBOK is equivalent to PRINCE2’s Project Brief. 14 Based on OGC PRINCE2™ material, unless otherwise stated.

  • #19 After letting the delegates introduce themselves it is now time to tell them what your goals and expectations are for the course. Tell them that you need to prepare them for the exams and that it means that you will need to go through the material and various exercises with them. Also tell them that your other objective is to make them understand the underlining philosophy of using PRINCE2 in a project environment. If you have people in your class who have used PRINCE2 before tell they are welcome to give any feedback on their experiences.
