Explanation

Survey

A method of gathering information from a sample
of individuals
Example: Customer surveys you need to find out
what your customers really think about products
Advantage: A broad range of data which can be
collected
Disadvantage: Respondents may not feel
encouraged to provide accurate, honest answers
A focus group is which a group of people are
asked about theiropinions and beliefs
Example:You might conduct a focus group made
up of high school students so they can find out
whether they would attend, what kinds of
activities would attract them, and what qualities
they would like to see
Advantage: The Ability Of Group Participants To
Interact With Each Other
Disadvantage: It is not suitable for gathering
quantitative data

Focus Group

Questionnaire

Example:You can find examples of questionnaire
by finding out products and what you can use it
for
Advantage: You can ask open or closed
questions and You can have a written record of
people's responses
Disadvantage:Questionnaires, like many
evaluation methods occur after the event, so
participants may forget important issues.

Interviews

Uses: Find out what people think about
something
The interviews might be good enough to be in the
media product itself
Advantage:Quick way of getting people’s views
and opinions about things
Disadvantage:Easy to forgot what people have
said so need to record interviews

Observations

Uses:Researching for a Media Production
Example: A scientist looking at a chemical
reaction in an experiment
Advantage: Easy way of seeing for yourself what
is happening
Disadvantage: Can be limited information as it is
only your opinion

Secondary Research Methods

Internet

Use:Find information on Media products and for the
content of Media productions
Example:If there was no books we would use internet
so we can find information quickly and easily
Advantage: Can Quickly find a lot of information
Easy to download print Material
Able to undertake searches for specific information
Disadvantage:Some sources not always reliable
Can produce too much information, some of which is
not relevant

Newspapers

A printed publication consisting sheets and containing
news, feature articles, and advertisements
Examples:,Daily Mail, Daily Mirror The Guardian,
London Evening Standard, Metro and The Sun
Advantages:You get the information about sports
events, business news.
You get day to day information what’s happening
round the world.
Disadvantages: Ad space can be expensive and can
have Poor photo reproduction limits creativity

Library research

Use: Find Reliable, Published information on Media
Products and for the content of Media Production
Advantage:Wide range of information
Disadvantage: Can be time-consuming and involve a
lot of searching for the right information

Magazine

A regular television or radio program which is a
variety of topical news or entertainment items
Advantage: Allows better targeting of audience for
choosing magazine publications
Primary & Secondary research method

Disadvantage: There is limited terms of ad in place
and formatted an Space and ad layout costs are
higher

Searching Archives

Use: find information on old media products and for
the content of media productions
Advantage: Good for historical information
Disadvantage: Information can be outdated

Primary & Secondary research method Name: Yaqub Subject: BTEC Creative Media th Date of Submission: Friday 20 September 2013 Introduction: Primary Research Methods Name of Research Method Explanation Survey A method of gathering information from a sample of individuals Example: Customer surveys you need to find out what your customers really think about products Advantage: A broad range of data which can be collected Disadvantage: Respondents may not feel encouraged to provide accurate, honest answers A focus group is which a group of people are asked about theiropinions and beliefs Example:You might conduct a focus group made up of high school students so they can find out whether they would attend, what kinds of activities would attract them, and what qualities they would like to see Advantage: The Ability Of Group Participants To Interact With Each Other Disadvantage: It is not suitable for gathering quantitative data Focus Group Questionnaire Example:You can find examples of questionnaire by finding out products and what you can use it for Advantage: You can ask open or closed questions and You can have a written record of people's responses Disadvantage:Questionnaires, like many evaluation methods occur after the event, so participants may forget important issues. Interviews Uses: Find out what people think about something The interviews might be good enough to be in the media product itself Advantage:Quick way of getting people’s views and opinions about things Disadvantage:Easy to forgot what people have said so need to record interviews
