3. Cultural Background
The Bukidnons are one of the traditionalistic ethnic groups in
the southern Philippines. They inhabit the northeastern part
of Mindanao, the second largest island of the archipelago.
The term “Bukidnon” (mountain dweller) was derived from
the Cebuano language but nowadays, it is accepted by most
members of the ethnic group referred to.
There are seven different tribes in the province namely:
Talaandig, Higa-onon, Bukidnon, Umayamnon, Matigsalug,
Manobo and Tigwahanon.
The tribes in the province of Bukidnon are indigenous and
their names are derived from the rivers/ watershed areas that
they inhabited. The Matigsalugs, for example, are the people
who live along the Salug river and the Tigwahanuns – are
natives who inhabit the banks of the Tigwa river.

5. Religious Beliefs
They continue to believe in a vast hierarchy of
invisible supernatural beings led by Magbabáya,
"most powerful of all." These spirits possess human
characteristics and, while most are beneficent, they
have to be won over with sacrifices of food and drink.

7. The Bukidnon's Way of Life
The Bukidnon’s major means of subsistence are
food gathering and swidden agriculture. The
men fish and hunt; the women gather shellfish
and jungle roots. Traditional agricultural
practice was done through a cooperative labor
system called huliga or hunglos, wherein
farmers tilled one field and then another in
sequence, encouraging communal integration
and sharing of harvest.

18. Bukidnon is also labelled as the highland paradise in
the heart of Mindanao. While it derived its name from
the Visayan term “bukid” for “mountain”, it is
predominantly a rolling grassland plateau with an
average elevation of 915 meters. The rolling uplands,
deep canyons and valleys alternating with the low
plains create a refreshing vista for dwellers and
travellers alike.
Bukidnon is relatively cool and moist throughout the
year. The refreshing cool climate in the Bukidnon
plateau is attributed to its fairly high altitude.
