My media product targets African American males aged 14-19. To attract this audience, I replicated the style of Vibe magazine, using a casual dressed model, bold fonts, and focusing on the boy band BBK. I included a pull quote to draw readers in and support the article with different images. The product aims to develop the audience's knowledge of the band and appeal to their interests, while reflecting the codes and conventions of magazines typically read by African American youth.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
2. Repeats, develops or
challenges; frontcover
• Puff promotion- I wanted to use a puff promotion on
my front cover however I repeated my magazine of
inspiration (VIBE) and allowed for just my front cover
star to attract the readers and not a competition.
• Barcode- I repeated this from vibe magazine as the
barcode as it is a mandatory convention used across
all magazines that is sold in store and public places that needs a
barcode to scan it through.
• Main image-I repeated the main image as both I and my magazine of
inspiration used a close up head shot of their model. This close up
may attract the audience from further away as it allows it shows
who the cover star is more promptly than a long shot would
• Masthead- I have developed the masthead on my front cover, I have
kept the aspects of the big and bold behind the main image however
instead of it all being big and bold throughout I have put the QB
bigger and bolder than the magazine. I did this to allow the brand to
be seen more clearly and help it be memorable.
3. Repeats, develops or
challenges; Contentspage
• Masthead- I repeated the masthead as I kept the
QB signature in the corner of the page. This
allowed the recognition to still be on the page
however not in the way so that it was blocking all
the other important text.
• Main image- I developed my main image as I only used one
model just like Vibe magazine however I used a long distance
mid shot however my magazine of inspiration used a close up
mid-shot.
• Cover lines- I developed my cover lines as I used used the
same layout as I left my cover lines to go to the side of the
side of the page and out of the way however instead of
putting the page number next to the story I faded the number
behind that story and made it bigger so it attracted the eye.
4. Repeats, develops or
challenges; Doublepagespread
• Headline- I developed this further as I
wanted the headline to bring the audience
in however my pull quotation was my main highlight as this
engaged with the reader and developed them to read on
further to see in which context the quote was used.
• Main image-I repeated the main image as I used a close up
mid shot to show my model off. This magazine article helped
inspire the way that I wanted my model posed and the angle
that I wanted to develop my shot in.
• Text- I challenged this as for my article I produced more of a
background information sheet about the boy band BBK
instead of a question and answer sheet. I did this because it
helped anyone who had little knowledge about the band catch
up on what was happening on going on within their lives.
6. Masthead
I decided to call my magazine QB as it stands for queen bee
showing that it is the queen of all the magazines. I wanted
the target audience to see that my magazine was superior to
the rest.
Cover lines
I included five other cover lines to engage interest from the
target audience and encourage the reader to have a look
through the magazine.
Convergence and multi media
I have included extra features on the front of my magazine.
The QR code should help to direct the reader straight to the
website in order to allow no confusion to be added. The
price is also included and symbols of media in order to allow
the reader to know that the magazine has a media page.
Main headline
I wanted my main headline to stand put from the rest. This is
why it is in space and is bold. I made it a different colour so
that it stood out from the rest of the headlines it help easily
access the information about the article being about them.
Front cover
7. Contents page
Masthead
I included a masthead above but in line with the words
to engage the reader with what the contents of the
magazine are
Contents
I wanted to give my contents page a small masthead
above in order to help direct the reader to the page
information. I set these up in order down in vertical
line, I also included a bit of background on each story
to help support the text of the headline stories.
Main image
I used one main image in my contents page to help
support the main group theme. It also helps to throw
little hints towards the readers for them to read the
double page spread.
Editors notes
The editors notes help give and insight to what has
gone in when putting this magazine and an overall
introduction to the readers. It should also show what
to expect in the magazine.
8. Double page spread
Masthead
I decided this masthead because it helps engage
with the reader what happens overall. It helps
give insight into the article but not too much so
that the audience actually read it.
Notation of band names
This helps to show the audience which singers
are in this band. If the audience are looking at
another article but notice one of the band
members names this may persuade them to read
the article.
Article
I went for a background information article
because this helps audiences that do not know
the band well but want to get to know what goes
on behind the scenes.
Supporting images
I used supporting images in the bold text of the
rest of the band members to help support the
article of the band. I carried on with the
consistency of my model because this way it
helped to show the audience that it all flows
together.
10. Publishing house;Brightpublishing
• Bright was founded in 2006, it was established in order to do
business better. After making sure that they had the best
writers, designers, marketing and sales people they could
possibly get. They then launched two photography magazines
which are two of the strongest titles in the entire sector.
• Since the Bright has expanded into a full-service media agency
that produces magazines for the consumers. They provide a
rage of design, marketing and project management services
for some of the largest companies within the UK and Europe.
Bright specializes in creative, intelligent solutions to
company’s challenges.
11. E-zine; scoop.it
• In 2011 scoop.it they had published tens of millions pieces of
work to attract hundred million readers. They’re technology
gave a unique understanding of what worked and what didn’t
in order to make sure that publishing was not wasted online.
They collected data points from their users and listened to the
business owners and marketers who came to the meet ups. By
experimenting and cross checking findings they have
developed a unique methodology to achieve content ROI-
Lean content marketing.
• Lean content marketing provides a framework for the product
roadmap which is how the business was built on the platform.
12. Smartphone apps; mag2go.net
• It was Incorporated in 2003 in Toronto Canada in order to
develop digital publishing and multimedia related software.
They are a leading software developer of digital publishing
software. Their focus is on providing their clients with high
quality software products and services.
• They sell their products all over the world directly and through
a net of resellers. They are able meet needs and requirements
of every client.
• They try to provide their customers with full and free after-
sale service and support. Mag2go have specialists that are
always ready to answer all you questions in order to solve the
problems of their software faults.
13. Overall
• In conclusion I would prefer mag2go.net to distribute my
magazine. This is because it would become more popular as it
is easy to connect with and is eco friendly. By having my
magazine distributed onto peoples phones then it would be
easier for my target audience to access this.
• As my target audience is teenagers then this should also be
the main distributer that I should chose as teenagers are most
commonly on their phones, also its easier for them to get a
hold of instead of having to go into a shop and purchase the
magazine as this makes them go out of their way.
15. Technology; improvedhow?
• Photoshop- I started using photoshop never having used it before.
During my preliminary tasks I was able to use photoshop at a basic
level. During my main task my photoshop levels began to improve as
instead of using the wand to instantly erase the background I
created a shape to make it more neat and accurate.
• Word press- I had never used this before starting media A-level. At
first I was using it basic as I was inserting things into my blog but not
understanding fully. Now I am able to use word press by myself
without having to ask for help and able to manage and display my
blog by myself.
• PowerPoint- Before starting my coursework I already knew how to
use PowerPoint and was aware of most of the basic skills. I have
presented most of my work through PowerPoint as I find this the
neatest way in which to get all the information in one document.
16. Technology; improvedhow?
• Slide share- I had never used this before doing media A-level
however it was very easy to grasp the context on how to use
this. I have used this a few times within my blog and I am able
to produce power points that are now easier to access for my
controlled assessment.
• Canon DSLR hood- When starting my a-level I had used a
simple camera with auto focus. During my preliminary task I
struggles with this as I could not figure out how to use the
camera as it had so many different buttons for different
techniques. During my final product I still struggled however I
practiced as was able to develop my camera skills. I was able
to focus manually instead of with the auto. I was also able to
position my model in the correct way for the lighting to be
correct as well. So overall my camera work became a lot
neater.
18. Preliminary task; progression
• Looking back at my preliminary task compared to my final product I have developed and
improved my skills and ability in which to organise a photo-shoot. I have developed the
skills with the camera as I can now manually focus the lens instead of using the auto, this
allows me the get a clearer picture of what I want and to fade the light out from different
directions.
• My choice of magazine became more specific to the audience in my final product as it was
more controlled for the audience. My preliminary task was aimed at school children of any
age (within school), gender and ethnicity. However my final product was more controlled
for the audience that I chose. My target audience was black teenagers and was aimed more
at the male gender than the female. For this I used VIBE magazine as they have only ever
produced magazines with African American singers/rappers on the front cover, I tried to
recreate this as it fell into a specific content with my magazine target audience. My choice
of font was big and bold in order to allow it to grab the target audiences attention. There
was no swirly or girly writing/font it was big block letters which helped get it straight to the
point as statistics show that the male gender is lazier at reading and developing than the
females.
• My magazine displays a media convergence symbol as this should help it to be easier for
the target audience to develop and find out more about the magazine background.
• My preliminary task compared to my final product shows a massive development as my
skills with Photoshop, using a camera and overall attitude towards my product has
developed and increased massively.
20. Media product; audience
• My target audience was African American males around the age of 14-19. In
order to attract/address my target audience reflected the codes and conventions
of VIBE magazine.
• I used Katz uses and gratifications as the front cover may attract a female
audience who fancies that member of the band however the uses are for the
audience who appeal most to BBK and how they developed their knowledge of
that band.
• The mise-en-scene of my magazine such as costume and lighting were all staged
I a way to affect the target audience. I ensured that my model wore a jumper
and jeans in order to interlink with the target audience as this costume matches
their everyday attire as it was casual. However if I had of made my model dress
in a different costume then this would have impacted the magazine in a different
way. The costumes helps with Maslow's self esteem and self actualisation as it
shows that anyone can become famous if they try and develop their skills far
enough.
• My interview had various different content and images in order to support the
text of what was being said. I used a pull quote in my double page spread as this
quote can attract the reader and will want them to read the whole article as the
target audience may want to see in what context the quote was said.
