- Thank you. Particular thanks to my good friend Cecilia for inviting me. I’ve learned a tremendous amount from her and colleagues including Karen Chapple and Madeline Janis, as well as Dan Swiney who was a founding member of one of the NYIRN, an organization I used to run. Start by rebelling against the framing. Morning’s comments from Gov. I’m 53, and except for maybe some years at the beginning of my career, I’ve never known “not lean times.” Past 3 days, another conference - groups from around the country talk about the urgency of creating jobs. While California is unique in some ways, it too is victim to 30+ years of prolonged disinvestment nationwide. We’re in a recession because of inadequate regulatory oversight and because our basic underlying competitiveness is going down. Both those things are the result of demonizing government. Well, in a democracy, we are the government. Can’t go New Deal, but we do need to push back and say, you want to have good schools, you’ve got to spend money. You want to have highways, you’ve got to spend money. You want to save planet, you got to spend some money. Programs have to be effective, can’t waste money, but we do need to start re-investing.
- History – Launched 40 years ago, NYC was burning. Created non-profit architecture practice inside Grad School of Architecture to help communities rebuild their housing and their communal lives. For the students, offer service learning. SWOT Shift in community concerns and needs. People were more concerned about global warming and job creation then Pratt’s traditional issues. Not just a function of the economy but long term change. Shift also based on our own analysis of challenges and opportunities: The investment we need to make to transition to a low-carbon economy creates the opportunities for new business and job creation. On the other hand, if low-income communities don’t participate in weatherization and the transition to clean renewable energy, if they remain stuck in the existing system, they will be both energy hogs and exporters of wealth to buy energy, and entire society will be poorer and dirtier.

- Last Program is BBB – weatherization of low income communities Weatherization was a core strategy in the whole green job movement, Those job projections and expectations have not materialized. Problem of scale. BBB is our strategy for addressing this by leveraging community networks.

- Now working on a study of BNY to determine not only its economic impact, but lessons learned – What were key elements in its success? And is it replicable? Doing a national scan looking at other municipally owned manufacturing areas: Lessons Learned: There have a three part strategy: Stability – not converting, therefore safe for mfg to invest; Create a cultural reinforces sustainable practice. Make it the norm; and Make it easy – infrastructure and TA such as waste recycling.
