Rosmarinus officinalis AND ITS USES IN
AROMATHERAPY FOR MENTAL
RELAXATION
Presented By : Prerna

MSc II
Botany
Roll no 126
Objective
. The main objectives of the project are enlisted here:-
1) Enlisting the plants used in aromatherapy.
2) Phytochemistry of Rosmarinus officinalis
3) Selection of plants for extraction of oils.
4) Extraction of oils using Clavenger
5) Preparation of aroma oil to be used.
6) Identification of active constituents- TLC.
7) Identifying various uses of aromatherapy on mental relaxation.
Aromatherapy
• Aromatherapy is holistic healing treatment that
uses natural plant extracts, usually in the form of
essential oils.
• It promotes physical, emotional and mental well-
being.
• These oils, extracted from different parts of
plants, have therapeutic properties like
relaxation, stress-relief and mood enhancement.
Types of Aromatherapy
Olfactory Cosmetic Massage
Medical Fragrance
Essential oil
• Essential oils are concentrated liquids extracted from plants, capturing their
aroma and flavor compounds.
• They are typically obtained through processes like distillation and cold
pressing.
• The oils are mainly composed of alcohols, esters, phenols, terpenes, etc.
• It is used in aromatherapy, enhancing mood and focus, bug repellent.
Rosemarinus officinalis
• Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a perennial herb native to the
Mediterranean, known for its needle-like leaves and woody stem.
• It’s widely cultivated for culinary uses due to its aromatic flavour,
and its leaves are also valued in herbal medicine for their
potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and
antioxidant properties.
• Additionally, rosemary essential oil is popular in aromatherapy
for its effects on mental clarity and stress reduction.
Artemisia pallens
• Artemisia pallens, or Davana, is an aromatic herb native to India
and other tropical regions. Belonging to the Asteraceae family.
• It has a rich history in Ayurvedic medicine, where it’s used to
treat various ailments such as diabetes, hypertension, and
depression.
• Davana’s essential oil, extracted from its flowers, and has
antibacterial and antifungal properties and its fruity aroma,
making it a valuable ingredient in perfumery and fragrance
blending.

RF Value
• Rf values are approximate ranges used in TLC (Thin
Layer Chromatography) analysis of rosemary oil.
• They help identify components by observing spots on
the plate at specific positions.
• Visualization techniques like UV light or staining
reagents aid in identification.
• Variations in experimental conditions affect Rf values'
accuracy.
• Use Rf values as general guidance
Rf =
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑐𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡
Result
• TLC analysis can show varying colors for constituents in rosemary oil.
• Linalool, known for calming properties, may appear colourless to pale yellow on TLC.
• Other constituents like 1,8-cineole, camphor, and alpha-pinene may contribute to relaxation.
• Bornyl acetate might appear as a bluish-gray zone on the TLC plate.
• Effects of these compounds can vary among individuals and depend on concentration and
application method.
• Combined action of compounds in rosemary oil may create a calming effect on mental well-
being
Conclusion
• Pure and marketed rosemary oils analyzed using TLC.
• Observed spots on TLC plate had distinct colors indicating specific
components.
• Components identified based on Rf values.
• Rosemary oil shows potential for mental relaxation and stress alleviation.
• Supports its use in aromatherapy for various therapeutic benefits.
