Introduction
Oil is the life blood of an engine and just like the blood in
our bodies, it is required to fulfill different types of
functions of engine or machinery
What is Lubricants
lubricants is a substance introduced to reduce friction between
surfaces in mutual contact, which ultimately reduces the heat
generated when the surfaces move. It may also have the function of
transmitting forces, transporting foreign particles, or heating or
cooling the surfaces. The property of reducing friction is known as
lubricity.
Work of lubricants
1. lubricate engine or machinery’s parts
2. Reduce friction
3. Reduce corrosion
4. Reduce noise
5. prevent rust
6. increase engine machinery’s efficiency
7. crease engine or machinery ‘s life
8. cooling the engine
9. Keep moving parts apart
10. Seal for gases leakage
11. Cleaning
Properties of lubricants
1. High flash point
2. Anti freeze property
3. Corrosion prevention
4. High resistance to oxidation
5. Thermal stability
6. Anti-foaming
7. Lubricity
8. Cooling Property
9. Viscosity
10. High Viscosity index
11. Pour point

13. Total base number or Neutralization number
Classification of lubricants
Based on condition
1. Solid lubricants
2. Semi solid lubricants
3. Liquid lubricants
Based on use
1. Automotive lubricants
2. Industrial lubricants
3. Special lubricants
Based on grade
1. Multi grade lubricants
2. Mono grade lubricants
Based on source
1. Mineral based lubricants
2. Synthetic based lubricants
Automotive lubricants are two types based engine
1. CI engine lubricants
2. SI engine lubricants
Based on different Apply
1. Engine oil or Crankcase oil
2. Transmission oil
3. Differential oil
4. Steering gear box oil
Mineral based lubricants
The mineral lubricants get from crude oil through
refine . Usually which lubricants refine from crude oil,
it’s not suitable for use. There are use a lot of additives
in mineral lubricants for suite.Usually 10% additives
use in mineral lubricants .
Crude oil refine
What is additives
Oil additives are chemical compounds that used to
enhance the performance of lubricants and functional
fluids.
List of additives
Lubricants blending with additives
Classification of mineral based lubricants
The mineral based lubricants are three types , namely-
1. Paraffinic oil
2. Naphthenic oil
3. Aromatic oil
Paraffinic Oils
Paraffinic Oils is the molecular structure of long chains of
hydrocarbons that distinguish paraffinic oils from other
mineral oils. Paraffinic oils contain paraffin wax and are the
most commonly used base for lubricating oil products.
Qualities of paraffinic oils include a higher resistance to
oxidation, a higher viscosity index and pour point and
low volatility. They are used in the cosmetics industry, for
processing oils in the rubber, textile, and paper industries,
as industrial lubricants and for manufacturing engine oils.
Naphthenic oil
The molecular structure of rings of hydrocarbons
distinguish naphthenic oils from other mineral oils.
Naphthenic oils do not contain paraffin wax. The
qualities of naphthenic oils include good stability,
low viscosity, a low pour point and high volatility.
They are generally used for applications with narrow
temperature ranges where a low pour point is required,
such as manufacturing metal working fluids and
transformer oils.
Aromatic oil
Aromatic oils are vital to the tire manufacturing
industry. They have a condensed ring molecular
compound and, contrary to the name, do not have a
pleasant smell. They have low volatility and are used to
facilitate the processing of the rubber compounds.
They are also key to the technical performance of tires,
particularly road adherence.
Limitation of Mineral based lubricants
1. The presence of waxes, which can lead to poor
lubrication at low temperature.
2. Poor oxidation stability at continuously high
temperatures, which can lead to sludge and acid buildup.
3. The dependence of viscosity on temperature, which can
cause the base oil to thin excessively at high temperature.
4. A natural high temperature application limit of about
320°C .
5. Naturally occurring mineral oil is a cocktail of
hydrocarbons .The hydrocarbons create oxygen , sulfur
and nitrogen at high temperature.
6. Mineral lubricants consist differ shape molecular bond,
resulting irregular lubricants, thereby generate friction
and reduce efficiency.
7. Viscosity change depending on the temperature change.
Synthetic lubricants
Synthetic oil is a lubricant consisting of chemical compounds that are
artificially made (synthesized). Synthetic lubricants can be
manufactured using chemically modified petroleum components rather
than whole crude oil.
The synthetic lubricants are two types-
1. Fully synthetic lubricants( additives above 50%)
2. Semi synthetic lubricants(Additives above 25%)
List of synthetic lubricants
List of synthetic lubricants
1. Alkylated Aromatics
2. Olefin Polymers
3. Dibasic Acid Esters
4. Neopentyl Poly Esters
5. Poly Glycols
6. Phosphate Esters
7. Silicones
8. Silicate Esters
9. Fluoro Carbons
10. Poly Phenyl Ethers
Advantage of Synthetic lubricants
1. Better high and low temperature viscosity performance at service
temperature extremes
2. Better high viscosity index
3. Better chemical and shear stability
4. Decrease evaporative loss
5. Resistance to oxidation and oil sludge
6. Better lubrication during extreme cold weather start
7. Possibly a longer life
8. Improve fuel economy
9. Reduce engine wear
10. Increase engine efficiency
What is semi synthetic lubricants?
When lubricants consist by both mineral lubricants
and Synthetic lubricants that’s called semi synthetic
lubricants. Where remain 70% mineral base oil and
30% synthetic oil.
