2. Nitrogen Cycle:
Circulate and recirculate of Nitrogen between living and nonliving
organisms is called Nitrogen Cycle.
There is 78% nitrogen in atmosphere but living organisms can’t utilize it
directly so it is converted into useful compounds by following methods.
1. Nitrogen Fixation:
The chemical process by which atmospheric nitrogen is converted into
organic compounds, especially by certain microorganisms.
Nitrogen is fixed in three ways
• Thunderstroms
• Biological process
• Industrial process
3. Ammonification:
Ammonification is process by which microorganisms present in
soil, sediment or water decay living organism and release
ammonia and ammonium ions.
Nitrification:
• NH3 + NH4 ------- Nitrite (Nitrosomonas)
• Nitrite ----- Nitrate(Nitrobacter)
4. Assimilation:
Absorb and utilize of nitrates by plants for formation of proteins
and nucleic acid is called assimilation.
Denitrification:
The conversion of nitrate and nitrite again in gaseous forms of
nitrogen is called denitrification.
