Embedded User Assistance: Third Rail or Third Way?Steven Jong
It’s challenging to provide technical documentation in an environment where people say “nobody reads the manual” (or even “nobody looks at the help”) and instead demand “intuitive interfaces.” Smartphones are now the most common web browser, and we face an audience with little patience for reading; we feel squeezed out of existence. But there’s an opportunity for us to go from a supporting, or even superfluous, role to center stage: by providing embedded user assistance.
Steve describes and gives examples of embedded assistance, shows how it’s being used today, discuses the challenges of working close to or even inside the code, and relates the effects of participating throughout the design process (as in an Agile environment) as well as working with UX designers (or becoming one yourself).

A round up of resources (websites, blogs and other sources) that I've found useful in 2015 and will continue to do so in 2016. This edition is centered around 3 key trends for 2016.
The development of better library information systems will always remain the core business of any serious library organization, but a shift took place towards (freely) available web-based tools for creating and managing the information workflow.
End-users are not only using these heavily, but are also creating their own preferred tools. Today's students are incorporating Web 2.0 skills in daily life, in their social and learning environments. Tomorrow's academic staff will expect to be able to use their preferred tools and resources within their work environment. Today's ánd tomorrow's libraries should support students and staff in the learning and research process by integrating their services and resources into our patrons' environments.
This practical workshop will demonstrate the use of Web 2.0 technology to empower users and librarians. During a hands-on session, participants will work with these tools. They will develop tailor-made services via personal start page software like Netvibes, making use of RSS-feeds, Widgets and Browser extensions.
We will explore the use of Netvibes and Web 2.0 tools in library staff and/or library user education/instruction. We will focus on library services which can be created almost on-the-fly with low costs and high impact. The growing use of social networks justifies the development of a library presence within these networks to reach out to our users.

Painless XML Authoring?: How DITA Simplifies XMLScott Abel
Presented at DocTrain East 2007 by Bob Doyle, DITA Users -- This introduction to XML Authoring will acquaint you with over fifty tools aimed at structuring content with DITA. They are not just DITA-compliant authoring tools (editors) for writers. They also include content management systems (CMS), translation management systems (TMS), and dynamic publishing engines that fully support DITA. You will also need to know about tools that convert legacy documents to DITA and help to design stylesheets for DITA deliverables. The best DITA tools for technical communicators implement the DITA standard while hiding all the complexity of the underlying XML (eXtensible Markup Language).
As a tech writer and not a tech, you should be able to forget about XML - except to know that you are using it (DITA is XML) and that it consists of named content elements (or components) with attributes. You need to know enough about the content elements so you can reference (conref) them for reuse. You need to know about their attributes so you can filter on them for conditional processing. And you should appreciate that because components are uniquely identifiable they lend themselves perfectly to automated dynamic assembly using a publishing engine.
We will describe how you can get started with structured writing without knowing XML or installing anything.
The promise of topic-based structured authoring is not simply better documentation. It is the creation of mission-critical information for your organization, written with a deep understanding of your most important audiences, that can be repurposed to multiple delivery channels and localized for multilingual global markets. You are not just writing content, you are preparing the information deliverables that enhance the value of your organization in all its markets.
To do that well, you must understand the latest tools in structured writing that are revolutionizing corporate information systems - today in documentation but tomorrow throughout the enterprise, from external marketing to internal human resources. Whether you are trying to push a new product into a new market or are “onboarding” a new employee, the need for high quality information to educate the customer or train the new salesperson is a challenge for technical communicators. You need to think outside the docs!
The key idea behind Darwin Information Typing Architecture is to create content in small chunks or modules called topics. A topic is the right size when it can stand alone as meaningful information. Topics are then assembled into documents using DITA maps, which are hierarchical lists of pointers or links to topics. The pointers are called “topicrefs” (for topic references).
Think of documents as assembled from single-source component parts. Assembly can be conditional, dependent on properties or metadata “tags” you attach to a topic. For example, the “audience” property might be “beginner” or “advanced.”
At a still finer level of granularity, individual elements of a topic can also be assigned property tags for conditional assembly. More importantly, a topic element can be assigned a unique ID that makes it a content component reusable in other topics.
As you will learn, DITA is a leading technology for “component content management,” which multiplies the value of your work. You need to leverage DITA and structured content to multiply your income.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.
Code reviews are vital for ensuring good code quality. They serve as one of our last lines of defense against bugs and subpar code reaching production.
Yet, they often turn into annoying tasks riddled with frustration, hostility, unclear feedback and lack of standards. How can we improve this crucial process?
In this session we will cover:
- The Art of Effective Code Reviews
- Streamlining the Review Process
- Elevating Reviews with Automated Tools
By the end of this presentation, you'll have the knowledge on how to organize and improve your code review proces

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
We describe the deployment and use of Globus Compute for remote computation. This content is aimed at researchers who wish to compute on remote resources using a unified programming interface, as well as system administrators who will deploy and operate Globus Compute services on their research computing infrastructure.
Presentation of context: Web Annotations (& Pundit) during the StoM Project (May 2014 – Apr. 2016)
1. Presentation of Context:
Web Annotations (& Pundit)
during the StoM Project (May 2014 – Apr. 2016)
Luca De Santis – Net7 Srl
StoM Final Review – Bruxelles, June 21st 2016
2. Why this presentation
• Presenting the most relevant events happened in the two years of
the project regarding web annotation
– (and why Pundit has become a relevant technology in this Arena…)
3. Annotations? What are we talking about?
• Def. “Annotation, or tagging, is about attaching names, attributes,
comments, descriptions, etc. to a document or to a selected part in a
text.”
• My favourite definition when explaining Pundit: “Marginalia on digital
documents”
4. Does it make sense(to talk about annotations on the web)?

Watch “Perspectives on Annotating Scholarship” – Hypothes.is, published Dec 1st 2015
To see this part: http://bit.ly/28UKTWT – for the whole video: https://youtu.be/_XBBWD1OjPw
6. Yes it makes sense!
• Why? See the video excerpts shown before!
– Growing need to provide tools to contextualise user generated content,
beyond simple “conky” comments
– To provide powerful tools for students, researchers, professionals (but
also for general users…)
– It might be a killer app for certain domains (e.g Scholarship)
• How should it be done?
– Standard-based
– Open interoperable systems
– Avoiding locked-in, closed systems from commercial vendors
• Who did in the last months work in this “Arena”?
– Evolutions in the Market
– W3C
– New Alliances
