Enhancing the teaching of grammar
explicitly in Malaysia from teacher’s
perspectives

Research Questions
• Why the teachers neglect the teaching of
grammar in the classroom or as in the lesson
• What are the problems or causes that the
students are having in learning grammar?
• What are the problems that the teachers are
having in teaching grammar?
• What are the appropriate teaching methods
and materials to teach grammar in the
classroom?
Instruments
(teachers)
• Questionnaire.
– Two parts of questionnaire : Part A and Part B.
– Part A: focus on teacher’s experiences and the
opinions in teaching grammar.
– Part B: seeking the information about teaching
grammar
• Interview.
– Will be conducted on 2 teachers and the
questionnaire will be distributed to 3 teachers.
Instruments
(students)
• Questionnaire.
– Focus only 6 questions
– Only choose 6 students mainly focus on three
levels: advanced, intermediate and slow.
– Focus on their understanding in learning grammar.
Sample
• The sample will be the students.
• In this mini research, I only let the students to
answer the questionnaire. There are 6 of
students that I chose and they are from 3
different levels: weak, intermediate and
advanced
• There are 5 English teachers that had been
chosen to reinforce the statements of
teaching grammar.
Results
• The results from the teachers will be analyzed
according to this two different aspects:
• Interview
• Questionnaire.
• The results from the students will be analyzed
according to one aspect:
• Questionnaire.

Please give your explanation.
For the question 1, the researcher found that according to teachers, teaching of
grammar are is not that difficult but it depends on the teacher’s experiences,
explanation, teaching methods and approaches .
For question 2, the hardest part that the teachers considered are subject verb
agreement as it consists of many different aspects, adverbs/ adjectives, quantifiers
and verbs (tense)

causes that make the students are not interested in learning grammar?
2. What do You think the problems in teaching Grammar?
For the question 1, according to the teacher’s experience that the students are not
interested in learning grammar because of the teaching methods are dull and are not
in fun learning.
For the question 2, according to the teacher, the problems in teaching grammar are
depending on teacher’s experience in teaching and explanation as well as the
teaching methods.
What are the appropriate teaching
methods and materials to teach the
grammar in the classroom?
1. What are the best methods to teach grammar according to your teaching
experience?
2. What kind of teaching materials do you usually used to teach the grammar? (
You are allowed to circle more than one answers) video, slides, flash card,
manila card, mahjong paper, pen marker and whiteboard, paper ( handouts )
For the question 1, most teacher states that the best methods they usually used are
manila card, mahjong paper, whiteboard and marker pen to teach grammar because
it is easy to explain one by one to the students.
For the question 2, teachers are usually manila card, mahjong paper, video and slides
as well as handouts to teach grammar and to emphasize the learning of grammar to
the students.

2. Which one of the other elements such as literature or enhancing 4 main skills
can be used together with the learning of grammar? Please give your
explanation.
For the question 1, the reason that the researcher asks this question is to seek what
is actually the easy part in grammar to teach to the students. It is because, some of
teacher are actually “picky” to teach the grammar for the students.
For the question 2, the reason for the researcher to ask this question due to
investigate what is the other elements that can be used together to teach the
grammar. It is because, some teachers do not how to synchronize the teaching of
grammar with other elements in learning language.
Experiences in teaching
1.How long have you been teaching English Language?
2.Do you hold any post as an English teacher such as head panel, facilitator, or
excellent teacher? Can you tell me about your task?
For the question 1, the reason researcher asks the question is to seek how long they
had been in this teaching field. It is because, an experienced teacher is the ones who
has been in teaching field more than 10 years and according to their promotion and
accommodations . Besides that, they know how to deal with the students according
to their experience.
For the question 2, the reason that the researcher asks this question is to seek how
importance the respondent towards the school and how long they has been served
in this teaching field.

toward the learning of grammar.

understand what they had learnt in the
classroom and in the lesson. All the questions
are related to individual perspectives as the
researcher decide to see the student’s personal
point of view in learning grammar.

grammar in the classroom. It is totally different with the advanced learner plus

The students choose subject verb agreement and modal as their number one to
learn due to this part is easy to learn once the students understand the concept.
The part they do not want to learn is preposition and nouns because due to the
fact they always learn it in their first language and in their daily life.

Presentation mini research methdology

  • 1. Enhancing the teaching of grammar explicitly in Malaysia from teacher’s perspectives Conducted and Prepared by: Noor Illi Bt Elas (illielas)
  • 2. Research Questions • Why the teachers neglect the teaching of grammar in the classroom or as in the lesson • What are the problems or causes that the students are having in learning grammar? • What are the problems that the teachers are having in teaching grammar? • What are the appropriate teaching methods and materials to teach grammar in the classroom?
  • 3. Instruments (teachers) • Questionnaire. – Two parts of questionnaire : Part A and Part B. – Part A: focus on teacher’s experiences and the opinions in teaching grammar. – Part B: seeking the information about teaching grammar • Interview. – Will be conducted on 2 teachers and the questionnaire will be distributed to 3 teachers.
  • 4. Instruments (students) • Questionnaire. – Focus only 6 questions – Only choose 6 students mainly focus on three levels: advanced, intermediate and slow. – Focus on their understanding in learning grammar.
  • 5. Sample • The sample will be the students. • In this mini research, I only let the students to answer the questionnaire. There are 6 of students that I chose and they are from 3 different levels: weak, intermediate and advanced • There are 5 English teachers that had been chosen to reinforce the statements of teaching grammar.
  • 6. Results • The results from the teachers will be analyzed according to this two different aspects: • Interview • Questionnaire. • The results from the students will be analyzed according to one aspect: • Questionnaire.

  • 13. Why the teachers neglect the teaching of grammar in the classroom or as in the lesson. Do you think teaching grammar is important in English subject. Why? 1.Do you think a component of teaching grammar is difficult compare to other components? 2. What is the hardest part in teaching grammar? Please give your explanation.(subject verb agreement, Modal, Preposition, Articles, Verbs(Tenses),Conjunctions,Adverbs/adjectives,Nouns,Quantifiers,Pronoun) Please give your explanation. For the question 1, the researcher found that according to teachers, teaching of grammar are is not that difficult but it depends on the teacher’s experiences, explanation, teaching methods and approaches . For question 2, the hardest part that the teachers considered are subject verb agreement as it consists of many different aspects, adverbs/ adjectives, quantifiers and verbs (tense)
  • 14. What are the problems that the teachers are having in teaching grammar What are the problems or causes that the students are having in learning grammar? 1. According to your experience in teaching English, what do you think the causes that make the students are not interested in learning grammar? 2. What do You think the problems in teaching Grammar? For the question 1, according to the teacher’s experience that the students are not interested in learning grammar because of the teaching methods are dull and are not in fun learning. For the question 2, according to the teacher, the problems in teaching grammar are depending on teacher’s experience in teaching and explanation as well as the teaching methods.
  • 15. What are the appropriate teaching methods and materials to teach the grammar in the classroom? 1. What are the best methods to teach grammar according to your teaching experience? 2. What kind of teaching materials do you usually used to teach the grammar? ( You are allowed to circle more than one answers) video, slides, flash card, manila card, mahjong paper, pen marker and whiteboard, paper ( handouts ) For the question 1, most teacher states that the best methods they usually used are manila card, mahjong paper, whiteboard and marker pen to teach grammar because it is easy to explain one by one to the students. For the question 2, teachers are usually manila card, mahjong paper, video and slides as well as handouts to teach grammar and to emphasize the learning of grammar to the students.
  • 16. Others 1.Which topic/s of teaching grammar do you think is/are easy for your students. 2. Which one of the other elements such as literature or enhancing 4 main skills can be used together with the learning of grammar? Please give your explanation. For the question 1, the reason that the researcher asks this question is to seek what is actually the easy part in grammar to teach to the students. It is because, some of teacher are actually “picky” to teach the grammar for the students. For the question 2, the reason for the researcher to ask this question due to investigate what is the other elements that can be used together to teach the grammar. It is because, some teachers do not how to synchronize the teaching of grammar with other elements in learning language.
  • 17. Experiences in teaching 1.How long have you been teaching English Language? 2.Do you hold any post as an English teacher such as head panel, facilitator, or excellent teacher? Can you tell me about your task? For the question 1, the reason researcher asks the question is to seek how long they had been in this teaching field. It is because, an experienced teacher is the ones who has been in teaching field more than 10 years and according to their promotion and accommodations . Besides that, they know how to deal with the students according to their experience. For the question 2, the reason that the researcher asks this question is to seek how importance the respondent towards the school and how long they has been served in this teaching field.
  • 18. Students Questionnaire The questions are designed to seek the information of the students perspectives toward the learning of grammar. R A T I O N A L E Generally, the answers that the students give out will be able to help the researcher to understand what they had learnt in the classroom and in the lesson. All the questions are related to individual perspectives as the researcher decide to see the student’s personal point of view in learning grammar.

Yes No The answer that students give because 3 of them which are slow learner plus one intermediate learner are actually do not understand the learning the grammar in the classroom. It is totally different with the advanced learner plus one intermediate learner who actually can understand the learning grammar.

Yes No As for this question, 4 of them which are intermediate and advanced learner are actually revise grammar at home other than completing their homework given by their teacher. Meanwhile, 2 of them who is slow learner are not having their revision and completely depend on their homework because they need the guidance or assist to learn grammar.

Question 4 120 240 Sales YES NO • The question: • Do you find learning grammar is interesting/ Yes No As for this question, the students are actually not enjoying the learning of grammar as long as only if the lesson is interesting. However, for the advanced learner, they found that this will be interesting to learn as they also learn the other elements in learning language.
  • 23. Question 5 • The question: • Which part in Grammar that you like to learn? ( You are allowed to circle more than one answer) – subject verbs agreement – Modal – Preposition – Articles – Verbs (Tenses) – Conjunctions – Adverbs / adjectives – Nouns – Quantifiers – Pronoun 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 The Student s THE ANSWERS THE ANSWERS The students choose subject verb agreement and modal as their number one to learn due to this part is easy to learn once the students understand the concept. The part they do not want to learn is preposition and nouns because due to the fact they always learn it in their first language and in their daily life.

Yes No As for this question, all six students states that their English teacher gives the exercises in the classroom. This will help them to understand the learning of grammar and establish their understanding about the principles of learning grammar.
