ACID
AND
BASE
At the end of discussion, students should
be able to;
• Define acid and base
• Describe the physical and chemical properties of acids
and bases
• Use Ph scale to measure the acid / base level of the
material
• Explain the uses of acid and bases in our everyday life
ACID
• Are substances that tast sour.
• Latin word “acidus” (means sour)
• Not all acid taste sour, the
sourness can vary in different acid.
Properties of
Ex. Grapes, Coffee, Vinegar,
Oranges and etc.
• Turns litmus paper red/pink.
• Contains Hydrogen ions (H+)
that they release when dissolved in
water.
BASE
• Are substances that tast bitter.
• Also known as alkaline.
Properties of
Ex. Ditergent, shampoo, baking
soda and etc.
• When added to water give foam
and feel slippery to the touch.
• Turns litmus paper Blue.
• Contains Hydroxide ions (OH-)
that they release when dissolved in
water.
What will happen if we combined an acid
and a base?
• There will be a reaction happen called
"neutralization reaction.”
• Resulting in the formation of water and salt.
• The pH scale was invented
in 1909 by Danish
biochemist Søren Sørensen.
Pouvior Hydrogen (pH)
• The pH comes from the
french word means “The
power of hydrogen.”
• Based on the Figure, what does the range
from 0 – 14 indicate?
• What does pH that is less than 7 indicate?
• What does pH that is greater than 7
indicate?
1. Which one between gastric juice that has
3.5 pH and tomato with the pH of 4.6 is
more acidic?
2. Which one between an ammonia solution
with a pH of 11.5 and a solution of baking
soda with a pH of 8.3 is more basic? Why?"
1. Which one between a solution of bleach with a pH of
12.5 and a solution of milk of magnesia with a pH of
10.5 is more basic?
2. Comparing a solution of lemon juice with a pH of 2.3
and a solution of vinegar with a pH of 2.8, which one is
more acidic?
3. Comparing a solution of household ammonia with a
pH of 11.0 and a solution of sea water with a pH of 8.0,
which one is more basic?
4. Between a solution of hydrochloric acid with a pH of
1.0 and a solution of orange juice with a pH of 3.5,
which one is more acidic? Why?
5. Considering a solution of sulfuric acid with a pH of
0.5 and a solution of black coffee with a pH of 5.0,
which one is more acidic? Why?
Direction: Answer the following on in a 1/2 sheet
of paper.
1.Comparing a solution of stomach acid with a pH of 1.5
and a solution of apple juice with a pH of 3.0, which one
is more acidic?
2. Between a solution of vinegar with a pH of 2.8 and a
solution of tomato juice with a pH of 4.2, which one is
more acidic?
3. Comparing a solution of antacid with a pH of 10.0 and
a solution of seawater with a pH of 8.1, which one is
more basic?
4. With a pH of 6.8, is the substance likely to be an acid
or a base?
5. If a solution has a pH of 8.5, would you classify it as
an acid or a base?.
ASSIGNMENT
Direction: Advance study about Acid and Base
indicator (p.98-102) and in a ¼ sheet of paper,
answer the folowing;
1. What is a pH Indicator
2. Prepare an example of indicators minimum
of 5
PROPERTIES OF ACIDS AND
BASES
BASES
● Aqueous solutions are also electrolytes
● Bases often have a bitter taste
● Bases also change the color of
indicators
● Bases do not react with metals in the
way that acids do
ACIDS
● Their aqueous solutions are electrolytes
● They conduct an electrical current
● Acids change the color of certain acid-
base indicators
● Acids react with active metals

WHAT ABOUT
SOLUBILITY?
Solubility does not indicate how quickly a substance will dissolve; rather, it
indicates how much of a substance will dissolve at a particular temperature.
Some solutes dissolve quickly, whereas others take much longer. When a
solution is agitated or shaken, or when the temperature of the solution is
raised, a solute dissolves more quickly
HOW MUCH WILL DISSOLVE?
LIQUID-SOLID
SOLUTIONS
When the temperature of water rises, some
solutes, such as sodium chloride and calcium
carbonate, do not become more soluble
LIQUID-GAS SOLUTIONS
In contrast to liquid-solid solutions, the
solubility of a gas in a liquid-gas solution
diminishes as temperature rises
0 to 14
is the pH scale range
7
A solution with this value of pH is neutral
0
A solution with this value of pH is very acidic
