The Wondering Monk – His Concept of ‘Spiritual Education for Conflict-Resolut...iosrjce
The tremendous explosion of information without commensurate wisdom, and immense power not
tempered with compassion, tolerance, ethics or humility has made today's education a potential source of
disaster. Today a moving storehouse of information is more encouraged than cultivated humanity.
Swami Vivekananda (12.01.1863-04.07.1902) was an Indian social reformer with an India-centric global
vision. He amalgamated Western Humanism (the ideas of personal liberty, social equality, justice and respect
for women) with Indian ethos. His views of education are rooted in traditional Indian philosophy that nurtures
the ideals of harmony, compassion, tolerance and peace. For him, religion and spirituality was the core of
education. It makes spirituality the highest and noblest pursuit - the pursuit of supreme emancipation, supreme
knowledge, and supreme bliss. Today, the degradation of man has been going on apace, as witnessed by the
enormous increase in broken homes, immorality, violence, religious conflicts, wars, addiction, crime etc.
Vivekananda's teachings of ‘potential divinity’ of the soul divinize human relationships. It makes life worth
living and letting all live. His concept of purity, perfection, and common origin of every soul frees religion from
the hold of superstitions, dogmatism, conflicts, ethnic confrontations and intolerance. Swamiji has laid the
foundation for 'Spiritual Humanism’ to be propagated by Universal Life-Building, Man-Making and CharacterBuilding
Education.

Education is a medium to change the characteristic of human beings to reach their perfection. In Islam, the ultimate goal of education is to uphold humanistic values thare embedded in every individual. This article attempts to analyse the application of Islamic concept of education by putting emphasis on the process of humanization. It is argued that the function of education is not only to provide cognitive knowledge for students, but also
to introduce to the students humanistic values and principles. Humanitzation in Islamic education means that students are taught how to develop good character and personality. This is the challenge of development and progress in all lines of life that produces some of the social changes are large and comprehensive on human life and lead to social change. Education is charged on the human values of self learners Humanistic values that are embedded in Islamic education include: religious values, togetherness, and partnership.

2. Allama Iqbal (1877–1938) was a shining star of
the galaxy of Indian thinkers, scholars and
philosophers who shaped human thought and
knowledge during a literary genius, a linguist,
a man of foresight, a man of faith in Almighty
God, a man of peace and unity, a man of justice
and equality, a man of love and humanity, and
a man of wisdom and knowledge The
visionary in him sought to inspire the people of
his times, to cultivate high moral values in their
lives so that a higher moral society may come
into being.
3. Development of Balanced Mind
The current emphasis on the holistic
growth of students in all the modern
theories of education in India today –
the development of the mind, body
and soul with a view to tapping the
full potential of an individual - is a
notion that was staunchly advocated
by Iqbal in his times.
4. A sound educational system, therefore, must
successfully integrate academic learning
seamlessly with activities that aim to build
confidence, help every individual to establish
faith in one’s one socio-economic, cultural and
religious identity while develop values of
tolerance and peaceful co-existence with people
from every walk of life.
5. concept of ‘Khudi’, the underlying and central theme of Iqbal’s
Philosophy. ‘Khudi’ means selfhood, while in Urdu, it stands for
self-esteem, self-respect and self-reliance. Iqbal wanted to infuse
the essence of this notion, not only in individuals’ lives, but also in
society as a whole. He fully believed in, and preached, the notion
of national honor through self-reliance and independence.
National dignity and honour were matters of serious concern to
him His concept of Khudi was related to a human race and
humanity. The aim of this concept was to show that man is the
master, beneath Allah, of all living beings on earth. This concept
also brings man to the zenith of his individuality.. The meaning
and the scope of ‘khudi’ and the specific characteristics that
impact on the ‘khudi’ of an individual, a society and the nation at
large,
6. He wanted to lay the foundation of a sound, healthy,
and a moral society so that a welfare state may come
into being. He was anxious to bring a positive change
in the behaviour of the people through his teachings,
this was, for him, the real aim and objective of
education. A meaningful and purposeful education
should meet this aim. He emphasized that individuals
should live a productive life. It is clear that certain
fundamental principles of Indian education are
intrinsic to Iqbal’s educational philosophy. These
principles include equity, social justice, non-violence,
human dignity, economic well being, and cultural self-
respect. All of these can be subsumed into the broader,
umbrella concept of a “meari moashra” (an ideal
society) that Iqbal strived for.
7. Education should concentrate on providing
hands-on learning experiences, develop
problem-solving abilities and emphasize
practical activity, as opposed to mere book
learning.
8. Knowledge of Child Growth and Development
Use of Energy of Child in Positive Manner
Joyful Learning
10. The relevance of Iqbal’s ideas on education,
founded as they are on eternal principles of
holistic development, now become crystal clear
to our current contention.
