For thousands of years, humans lived in harmony with the environment, but as civilization developed, human interference increased and caused major ecological problems. Large cities and industries pollute the air, water, and land on a massive scale. Vast forests are cut down, disrupting oxygen levels and causing many species to become extinct. The Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine in 1986 was one of the worst ecological disasters, damaging agriculture, forests, and human health over a wide region for many years to come. While some international progress has been made to address these issues, more coordinated global efforts are still needed to protect the environment and ensure sustainable life on Earth for future generations.
