For thousands of years, humans lived in harmony with the environment, but as civilization developed, human interference increased and caused major pollution problems. Large cities and industries pollute the air, water, and land with over 1000 million tons of harmful substances annually. Deforestation upsets oxygen balances and causes species extinction. The Chernobyl disaster caused massive damage to Ukraine's agriculture, forests, and human health. While some progress has been made through environmental agencies and groups like Greenpeace, more worldwide cooperation is needed to protect nature for current and future generations.
