The International Monetary Fund (IMF) was created in 1946 to provide loans to countries experiencing financial problems and stabilize the international monetary system. The IMF aims to maintain stable currency exchange rates, help countries with balance of payments issues, and prevent economic crises from spreading globally. It was established at the Bretton Woods Conference in 1944 and began operating in 1947 in coordination with the World Bank.
