Attia Rehman, a 5th semester BS Zoology student, presented on identifying freshwater fish species in the Chenab River in Punjab, Pakistan using a dichotomous key. The presentation introduced freshwater fish, defined a dichotomous key, and provided a key identifying 6 fish species found in the area based on images of their heads, bodies, and scales. Data was collected on 915 images of the 6 species from local farms and rivers to develop the identification tool.

In aquatic animals such as fish respiration takes place through special respiratory organs called gills, however lung fish respiration takes place through lungs. Gills are present on both the sides of the head of fish. The gills are covered by gill covers also called operculum. When the fish open its mouth, water is drawn into the buccal cavity and passed through the gills. The gills contain special type of cells that absorb the oxygen present in water. The absorbed oxygen is then supplied to all the cells of body through blood. In the cells, oxygen is converted into carbon dioxide and returned back to gills through blood. Ultimately, the gills release the carbon dioxide in water passing through them.

The gills of fish are very efficient; it is estimated gills can extract about 80% oxygen dissolved in water. In addition to the respiratory organs, the gills have an important role in maintaining the right balance of salts in the body.

Breaking this bottleneck requires seamless integration between compilation of the descriptive taxonomic data and the publication upon which the data are based
ORIGIN OF CHORDATES
Animal kingdom is basically divided into two sub kingdoms:
Non-chordata- including animals without notochord.
Chordata- This comprising animals having notochord or chorda dorsalis.
Chordates were evolved sometime 500 million years ago during Cambrian period (invertebrates were also began to evolve in this period) .
Chamberlain (1900) pointed out that all modern chordates possess glomerular kidneys that are designed to remove excess water from body.
It is believed that Chordates have originated from invertebrates.
It is difficult to determine from which invertebrate group the chordates were developed.
Chordate ancestors were soft bodied animals. Hence they were not preserved as Fossils.
However, early fossils of chordates have all been recovered from marine sediments and even modern protochordates are all marine forms.
Also glomerular kidneys are also found in some marine forms such as myxinoids and sharks. That makes the marine origin of chordates more believable.
Chordates evolved from some deuterostome ancestor (echinoderms, hemichordates, pogonophorans etc.) as they have similarities in embryonic development, type of coelom and larval stages.
Many theories infers origin of chordates, hemichordates and echinoderms from a common ancestor.
Puffer fish belonging to the family tetraodontidae are usually distributed in the shallow waters. During investigation in stations viz. Marina Park, Chidiyatapu and Burmanullah, around Andaman, five species from genus Arothron and two from Canthigaster have been recorded and were mostly found to prefer coral reefs and rock crevices, with the exception of Arothron immaculatus, which was found to be present in the open waters and it confined to sandy bottom substrate with patches of sea grasses around them. These fishes were found to be most diverse and abundant in Chidiyatapu with the Margelef’s Richness Index of 2.49, Shannon-Wiener index of 1.05 and Pielou’s evenness index of 0.96. Biometric analysis results demonstrate that they have shown an isometric growth. The individuals collected were mostly lying in the length group of 120-160 mm. Gut content analysis of A. Immaculatus reveals that the fish feed mainly on molluscs and sea urchin and the other food items were shrimps, crabs, sponges, micro algae, foraminiferans etc. gastro-somatic index, hepato-somatic index and gonado-somatic indices were also calculated to throw light upon the feeding behavior and reproductive maturity of the fishes. Most of the individuals were found to be in the developing stage of maturity.

• Brackishwater Fish: Fish that can tolerate a wide range of salinity (0.5 30.0 ppt)
and live in backwaters, estuaries and coastal waters.
Example: Mullet, Milkfish, Seabass, Pearlspot, Mudskipper, etc.
• Marine Fish: Fish that spend most or all of their life in seawater, such as Seas and
Oceans, having salinity above 30 ppt. There are about 240 species contributing to
the marine fisheries. Example: Sardines, Mackerel, Ribbonfish, Anchovies, Grouper, Cobia, Tuna, etc.

Abstract: The fishes are one of the most important, vertebrate, provided rich protein sources for human and several animals and important elements in the economy of many countries. Fish diversity essentially represents the fish faunal diversity. The survey was undertaken during the period from February 2016 to july 2016 in the region of Vettathukadavu, in Kayamkulam backwater, Kerala. The major objective of this study was to find out the biodiversity status of fishes in the Vettathukadavu region of Kayamkulam backwater, Kerala. Conservation status of fishes was assessed by IUCN Conservation status. The Survey of the studied stretch of backwater were resulted in recording of 25 fish species belonging to 6 orders and 15 familes. Of the 25 species reported during the study, 15 are least concern, 1 is critically endangered, 1 is vulnerable, 6 species are not evaluated and 2 species are not reported in IUCN Red.

Analysis of DNA Content of Wild and Cultured Labeo Calbasu Hamilton, 1822 Usi...ijtsrd
Labeo calbasu is an important food fish and commonly known as the "calbasu" or "Black Rohu". The present study was conducted on DNA extraction and determination of DNA quantity of both male and female of wild and cultured Labeo calbasu using Nanophotometer. DNA isolation was done and gel electrophoresis was carried out. Extracted DNA was analyzed using nanophotometer Nanophotometer P330 Implen, Germany to determine the concentration of DNA and its purity level. Several different methods have been employed in the quantification of nuclear DNA over the past 50 years. The ease of use of this technique not only makes it a feasible option for small volume analysis of DNA but also a practical alternative for spectrophotometric measurement. Significant progress was made to measure micro volume liquid samples 1µl in biotechnology and pharmaceutical applications. For the present study both male and female of wild Labeo calbasu from middle Ganga Region and cultured Labeo calbasu from culture ponds and hatchery were taken. The value of DNA concentration in female of wild Labeo calbasu was in between 58 -62 ng µl and of male was in between range of 64- 68 ng µl. The value of DNA concentration in female of cultured Labeo calbasu was 60- 66 ng µl and of male 68- 74 ng µl. India is a high speed population growing country and present population of India is about 127 crores. Among them a huge number of our children have been suffering from mal-nutritional diseases. They need protein feed and molluscs meat especially cephalopods meat is a good source of protein. India harvested 1.73 lakh tones of cephalopods, 0.04 lakh tones of bivalves and 0.02 tones of gastropods from Indian marine resources like Arabian sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean in the year 2013-2014. The people of southern states of India consume molluscs meat in huge quantity as their everyday protein resource food. The local poor people at Digha eat occasionally only cephalopods meat. From our study for about last 4 years we get 12 bivalves species belonging to 5 orders, 6 families and 8 genera out of 54 available bivalves species, 2 gastropods species belonging to 2 orders, 2 families and 2 genera out of 35 available gastropods species and 4 cephalopods species belonging to 3 orders, 3 families and 4 genera out of 4 available cephalopods species are edible. Definition:
“A dichotomous key is an important scientific tool,
used to identify different organisms, based on
observable traits”
• Dichotomous key is a tool that allows the user to
determine the identity of items and organisms in natural
world.
• It offers a user a quick and easy way of identifying
unknown organisms.
5. FRESH WATER FISHES OF PAKISTAN
INTRODUCTION:
• It is a diverse group of animals that live and breathe in water. All fishes
are vertebrates.
• Fish is a cold-blooded aquatic organism that breathes with gills and swims with
fins.
• In pakistan, 531 species of fish have been identified, among which 233 are
freshwater and the remaining 298 are marine fish species
FRESH WATER FISH:
• Fish that spend most or all of their life in freshwaters, such as rivers and lakes,
having a salinity of less than 0.5 ppt. around 40% of all known species of fish are
found in freshwater.
• They are found in fresh water bodies such as river, lakes, ponds etc.
6. FISHES OF CHENAB RIVER IN PUNJAB:
• Fishes are most diverse group of vertebrates with more than 33000 species. These are identified based on several visual
characters including their shape, color and head. It is difficult for the common people to directly identify the fish species
found in the market, classifying fish species from images based on visual characteristics using computer vision and
machines.
• This key has located six different species of fishes in the head qadirabad, chenab river in punjab, pakistan.
• This classification is based on visual features of six different species i.e
CTENOPHARYNGODON IDELLA (GRASS CARP), CYPRINUS CARPIO (COMMON CARP), CIRRHINUS MRIGALA (MORI),
LABEO ROHITA (ROHU), HYPOPHTHALMICHTHYS MOLITRIX (SILVER CARP), AND CATLA (THALA).
7. DATA COLLECTION:
• A dataset of 6 different fish species i.e. ctenopharyngodon idella (grass carp), cyprinus carpio
(common carp), cirrhinus mrigala (mori), labeo rohita (rohu), hypophthalmichthys molitrix
(silver carp), and catla (thala), containing 915 images, popular for fish farming in the tropical areas of
world including pakistan.
• This dataset is type of multiclass containing 3 dominant features of fish species (body, head and scale).
• Dataset include 36 grass carp images of different poses (body, head, and scale) and that 36 images of
grass carp taken from the 5 different local farms located near head qadirabad, punjab.
• Similarly, common carp (158 images), mori (241 images) and rohu (249 images) were captured manually
from 3 different positions at the river of chenab, punjab, pakistan.
• The remaining images of fish dataset considering silver carp (175 images) and thala (56 images) were
obtained from the marala head works, sialkot, punjab with 3 different positions.
