7. THE TIPYCAL ANIMAL
● Australian wildlife groups a huge
variety of unique animals: 83% of
mammals, 89% of reptiles, 90% of
fish and insects and 93% of
amphibians that inhabit the
continent are endemic to country.1
This high level of endemicity can
be attributed to the isolation of the
continent, tectonic stability and the
effect of unusual patterns of
climate change, which also affect
soil and flora over geological time
plates. A unique feature of
Australia's fauna is the relative
scarcity of placental mammals, as
opposed to the abundance of
marsupials, a group of mammals
that complete their embryonic
development in a pouch.
8. THE SPORTS
Rugby was first played in Australia in the
mid nineteenth century. In 1882 the first
match between teams from New South
Wales and Queensland was played.
For decades, the rugby club
championships of Australia were
organized at the state level, especially
the New South Wales and Queensland,
who played from 1874 and 1887
respectively. Rugby in Australia has
strong links with high-class private
schools.
Between 1986 and 1990 played the
South Pacific Championship, with the
participation of teams from New South
Wales and Queensland. These teams
also played Super 10 between 1993 and
