2. Ancient Australia (Ana and Marta H)
500 YEARS AGO:
Akama and the other men try to hunt a kangaroo to eat it while the women
collect fruits from the trees.
Akama´s ancestors arrived from Asia thousands of years ago.
Akama´s tribe are nomads: They build a shelter and find food
and water for a short time, and then they move.

3. The Aborigines elders tell many stories about the beginning of the world.

This woman arrived from the sea and created the first people.
She planted fruits and vegetables for food and created
holes in the ground for water.
● the rainbow serpent
she protects the land and is the origin of life. She created the mountains.
People must respect her land. In the beginning, the Rainbow Serpent was under
the ground

4. 2. THE EUROPEANS ARRIVE (Aarón and
Alberto)
Europeans arrive in Australia in 1770 searching for new land.
● The Endeavour
● Captain Cook
There are plants and many animals to hunt for food.
● They also find this strange animal the kangaroo

5. ● In June 1770 the reef damages Captain Cook’s boat and they must stay
for many weeks. They have a camp on the beach and eat fruit,birds,fish.
The aborigines don’t want to be their friends.
● In July 1770, they can sail again and arrive in “New South Wales”. Captain
Cook gives the land that name and raise a British flag there

6. 3. THE FIRST COLONISTS (Víctor and
Bartek)
-When John was 15 years old, he was poor
and needed to steal food for his mother and sister.
-The British authorities decided to send him
to Australia
- The first colonists in Australia were criminals (like John) and prison
guards

7. -In 1810 the governor gives him the ticket to leave but he is not totally free
-In 1813 the governor tells him that he is totally free and that he can travel
and live anywhere
-In 1846 John chooses to live in Web's creek. He is now a rich farmer who
lives with his wife and his 3 sons and 2 daughters

8. 4. GEOGRAPHY OF AUSTRALIA (Lucas
and Iván)
It’s surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and the Southern Ocean
- MODERATE CLIMATE in the south: the summer is from December to February and the winter
is from June to August .People celebrate Christmas on the beach.
- The centre of a country is a DESERT, people call this area “the Outback”.
- TROPICAL CLIMATE in the north
2 million of people live in Australia, mainly in Melbourne, Canberra(the capital) and Sydney
in the southeast and Perth on the southwest coast

9. Australia has got eight areas: New south Wales, Queensland,South
Australia,Victoria,Northern Territory,Western Australia,the Australian Capital Territory
and the island of Tasmania in the south,home to more than 500,000.
There are other islands around Australia.Some of the islands are popular tourist places and
one of this is special because is the only one in the world with rainforests growing sand.

10. THE GREAT BARRIER REEF
THE OUTBACK
The great Barrier Reef is a world Heritage site.
Millions of microscopic coral form groups. Coral reefs are home to
thousands of marine creatures: Whales,dolphins,clown fish.
The Outback is an enormous, remote dry area in central Australia.
Mining is an important industry in the Outback because there are different metals :Iron, lead. The mine also
produces pink diamonds.

11. 5. FAMOUS PLACES (Mario and Salva)
Wave Rock it’s an enormous rock formation in the Hyden Wildlife Park.
It’s about 14 metres high and 110 metres long.
It looks like a wave breaking on the beach.

12. Sydney Opera House It was built by Jorn Utzon in 1957 and
opened in 1973
There are more than 1,000 rooms in it.
Uluru (Ayers Rock) Tourists love to visit Uluru because the rock
changes colour. It’s about 600 million years old and measures 348
meters high and 9.4 kilometers long. It’s a sacred
site for the Aborigines.

13. 6. ANIMALS OF AUSTRALIA (Imane and Sira)
The marsupials are mammals and they live only in Australia and some
examples of marsupials are the Kangaroos,koalas and Tasmanian devils.
Marsupials’ babies stay in their mother’s pouch for months!!
Sometimes the Kangaroos can jump 3 times their
height.

kilogram of
eucalyptus leaves
every day

15. -Kangaroos:They’ve got very big feet and strong back legs.
-Koalas:They eat eucalyptus and sleep 18 hours a day.
-Tasmanian devils:They are carnivorous but also eat rubbish from humans.
-Duck-Billed platypus: they are mammals but lay eggs. It’s a unique animal!
-Snakes and spiders:They are very poisonous.
-Dingoes:They are dangerous animals. They can open doors, enter houses and
search food.

16. 7. AUSTRALIAN FOOD (Adriana and Paula)
Some fruits and plants only grow in Australia.
People rediscovered the original native food of Australia
in the late 20th century.
Lilly Pilly: it’s a fruit and the leaves of this plant are
warrigals greens, similar to spinach.
Witchetty Grubs:This white insects have a lot of protein. People eat
them raw or cook them in hot ashes . People say they are delicious

17. Anzac biscuits: the ANZA were soldiers fighting in the World War I.
The women wanted to send good food for their men. These biscuits don’t contain eggs
and stay fresh and preserved.
Lamingtons:Lord Lamington was a Governor of Queensland. It’s a dessert made
with cubes of sponge cake in chocolate and covered in coconut.
Meat:Is a big part of Australia diet and meat pies are very popular.
Everybody agrees that it is delicious!
Pie Floater:A baker, invented the pie floater in South in Australia
in 1914. He put a meat pie in a dish and poured pea soup around it.

18. 8. SPORT (Israel and Asier)
Australia hosted the Olympics in Melbourne in 1956,
and in 2000 in Sydney
Football is a typical Australian sport . In the game
there is an oval ball , there are 18 players in each
team. The players run with the ball and get points by
passing it through the post.

19. The colonists in Australia started to play cricket over 200
years ago. Now cricket is very popular .
The rules are: You play cricket with a small ball and a long bat
,there are 2 teams with 11 players each team and in one half of
the game one team throws the ball and the other hits
In Australia surfing started when the Hawaiian champion
Duke Kahanamoku visited the country.
Today many people practice surf

THE BLACK BOX
Dave Warren was an Australian scientist and he
invented, in the year 1957, the famous black box.
He invented a way to stop the destruction of the
box in a plane accident. The invention records the
pilot’s conversations and the plane’s data.

26. SPRAY-ON SKIN
In 1999, Fiona Wood, invent the Spray-on Skin. This
invention is an excellent method to help victims of
burns. The effect is very fast.

27. BIONIC EARS
Graeme Clark was an inventor of hearing aids.
Graeme graduated in medicine and studied how to
simulate hearing electrically. He developed an ear
implant and performed the first operation in 1978.
Today many people around the world use this
implant.

28. BOOMERANGS
The boomerang is an Australian icon. Historians
consider it the first man-made flying machine and it
was invented by Aborigines 10,000 years ago.
Today people use it in sport and there are many
competitions.
