2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. Drug Addiction In Go Ask Alice
Go Ask Alice is a real life look of the life of a drug addict. The book was originally published in 1971,
it gives you a sympathetic description of a 15 year old girl s dive into a life of drugs that still repeats
in today s teen culture. The book is mostly written in first person from her early days as an innocent
child whose only worries was trying to fit in and image, to life on the street trying to find the next fix.

3. The Concept and History of Cryptography
Jpz777 05/15/2013 Order # A2096310 From the codes messages passed furtively throughout the
courts of medieval Europe, to the infamous Enigma cipher machine which protected Nazi secrets in
World War II, the concept of cryptography is nearly as old as the written word itself. Today, the field
of information technology has developed to the point that even the most sophisticated encryption
methods are vulnerable, and for those working as information security officers, shielding a company s
invaluable data through the use of encryption has become an essential skill. Modern encryption
methods rely on much of the same techniques used throughout history, with human readable plaintext
being transformed into an unreadable format known as ciphertext upon transmission between two
parties, in effort to prevent nefarious third party intrusions. Within the sub field of cryptanalysis a
growing focus on mathematical theory has spawned the development of intricately constructed
algorithms, or governing systems used to precisely define a sequence of operations (Layton, 2007).
Modern cryptographic algorithms are capable of creating computationally secured systems that, while
they can be theoretically deciphered, are ostensibly secure from any feasible attack strategy. The most
widely applied cryptographic algorithms employed by information security officers today typically
fall under one of two categories: Symmetric key cryptography and Public key cryptography (Peltier,

Jefferson Blythe III. Was mainly about him trying to make the gun control and the violence under

year old a gun and told him to shoot the 18 year old and he did (line 26 31). He wanted to say that the
gun protection control should be enforced more. Because he said In Washington, DC, where I live,
your Nation s Capital, the symbol of freedom throughout the world, look how that freedom is being

5. Similarities Between Parents And Child Relationship
A child parent relationship is said to be one of the most loving, long lasting and important
relationships in the world. There are many of these relationships out there on earth. Some are
dysfunctional and some people look at as perfect. But in the most cases, these relationships are
somewhat familiar. Arnold s parents and Su Jens parents both share some similarities in their parent to
child relationship. They are both protective, loving and work hard for their children s future.
Throughout both books, the parent to child relationship showed great protectiveness. After so many
relatives died, Arnold s mother did not let her son leave the house. She was scared that her family
might have a curse upon them and she didn t want Arnold to be next. Don t leave me. Don t you ever
leave me. Promise you will never drink (54), she cried. Also, Arnold s parents were very scared when
Arnold decided to transfer to Reardan. They were fearful of his safety but they still let him go, so he
can achieve his true purpose in life. Right before Arnold stepped out his car to go inside of Reardan,
he said i m scared and the dad replied, i m scared too (54). Clearly Arnold s parents display immense
protectiveness for their child. Similarly, Su Jens parents are also very protective. When the Su Jen and
her mother first came to Canada, the mother was very worried for her daughter s safety. She kept
telling Su Jen, you must be careful by the river, always hold the rail and don t go near the

8. History And Philosophy Midterm Paper
Philosophy Midterm Paper For centuries scientists have been studying everything from evolution to
space. During that time, there have also been projects upon projects that were taken on by new,
emerging scientists who will continue the work of the teams who came before them. Each new team
brings a new discovery. Something that was previously just a question, such as what makes us water
different than dirt? , has now been answered due to dozens of different teams all working towards the
same goal. Thanks to those scientists, we now know what makes water special. It s not a physical
property, such as colorless, but it s the fact that it s made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms (F. Jabr 4).
Taking this concept of discovery, we can apply it to something more complex such as the definition of
life. Life is complicated, and many teams of researchers and scientists alike have worked towards the
goal of defining it. Before reading this article, it was assumed that the scientific community could
basically agree on one conclusion: A living thing has order, grows and develops, maintains
homeostasis, has a metabolic structure, reacts to stimuli, reproduces, and evolves. This definition of
life can be compacted into this simple statement made by NASA, [Life is] a self sustaining system
capable of Darwinian evolution. However, this statement has been proven untrue by Ferris Jabr s
theory that life doesn t actually exist because it s a concept rooted in the human mind. The reason he

9. The Heroic and Honorable Knight in The Canterbury Tales ...
Knights are one of the most mistaken figures of the medieval era due to fairytales and over
exaggerated fiction novels. When medieval knights roamed the earth, it was known that they were
only human and, like humans, had faults. These knights did not always live up to the standards
designated by society. However, in The Canterbury Tales, the knight is revealed as a character that
would now be considered a knight in shining armor, a perfect role model in how he acts and what he
does. Modern day people see them as chivalrous figures instead of their actual role as mounted cavalry
soldiers. As time passes, the idea of what a knight is changes from a simple cavalry soldier to a
specific type of behavior.
Historically, knights were not very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Canterbury Tales, the knight is a modern type of knight. Although the description of this
character s personality is vague, it is not hard for modern day people to visualize him. In the prologue,
it mentions that the knight follows the five basic ideals that a good knight should possess: chivalry,
Truth, honour, generousness, and courtesy (Chaucer 4). The knight fought in the Crusades, wars in
which Europeans traveled by sea to non Christian places and tried to convert people s culture by brute
force, which was considered noble and brave hearted. From his love of the five basics ideals
previously mentioned to his impressive military career, the knight is a perfect example of how a
knight should be represented. Indirectly, the tale is discussing both the knight and the idea of how a
knight should be. The tale does not describe much about the knight as in physical appearances and
characteristics of this knight but as the tale comes to an end, the book starts to unfold how this story
connects with this character. The tale itself is not important yet it s what the tale represents that is
important, such as pursuing courtly love, risking death, and respecting women. All of the previously
mentioned attributes are ones that knights should possess to achieve expected standards.
A knight s characteristics are usually described by using power and authority but, in actuality, the
knight is just a servant to a higher authority. An

10. Title IX Thesis
While Title IX is often thought of the women s sports bill , the history and progression of Title IX
suggests a far more complex history. In fact, as Amanda Ross Edwards suggests, Title IX s shift was
reaction to public conflict about the bill that was spurred after the bill s creation. The conflicts
surrounding the development of Title IX suggests that debates about who should be included in
educational spaces and who should be excluded from those spaces did not cease upon the Brown vs.
Board of Education or after the development of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As we examine the
controversy and discourse of Title IX especially regarding women in sports it becomes clear that the

While the development of this bill speaks some to the progressive spirit of the 1960s and 1970s, the
public backlash to this bill says even more about the lasting impact of discrimination in educational
contexts. As Edwards (2010, p. 307) notes, some of the emphasis on Title IX and athletics came from
the executive branch as they tried to construct these regulations; gender discrepancies were easy to
examine in the context of athletics. However, much of the public attention on Title IX and athletics
and the intense controversy surrounding Title IX came from the backlash against women athletics.
Edwards (2010) suggests that [The] focus turned to athletics primarily because of those groups
fighting against Title IX. Those opposed to Title IX, such as the NCAA and the American Football
Coaches Association, drew attention to an issue that the women s groups originally fighting for Title
IX had ignored, (p. 307). Thus, in attempt to quell the encroaching threat of female athletics, groups
that opposed Title IX s role in defending female athletes stoked the flames of controversy that
transformed the public understanding and the meaning of the bill.
Understanding the opposition s role in transforming Title IX is important because it ultimately

14. The Pearls Of The World In John Steinbeck s The Pearl Of...
Many pearl divers look for the most perfect and beautiful pearls, but most fail. Unlike Kino who is
one of the lucky few to find the pearl of the world . The Pearl a novel by John Steinbeck is about Kino
s life in a small village in Baja, Mexico. When he finds the pearl of the world that changes his family s
life. When you are overcome with greed you act, feel, and think differently. First of all, when you
want something you will all most stop at nothing to get it. Kino wanted the pearl from Juana so Kino
looked down at her and his teeth were bared. He hissed at her like a snake (59).Kino, who usually is a
kinds character, became overwhelmed with greed to get the pearl from Juana. Kino s personality
completely changed because of his greed. Secondly, greed can make you lie just to come into
possession of what you want. The pearl dealers made kino think that Perhaps the dealers were right
and the pearl has no value (71). The pearl dealers knew fo the pearl s value but do not want to pay the
true price of the pearl. They thought that because Kino was poor that they would be able to trick him.
Therefore, when you come into possession with something valuable you may feel that other people
might want to take it from you. When Kino got the pearl [He] felt the creeping of fate, the circling of
the wolves (50). Kino felt that people wanted to take the pearl from him like something was there
creeping up.
People may act differently when money is or is not involved. For example, if you were to ask
someone to do something for you, they are more likely to say yes if you offer money. This like when
the doctor said Have I nothing better to do than cure insect bites for little Indians ? I am a doctor, not a
veterinary (11). the doctor would not save Coyotito s life because he would not receive money. But
then when Kino had found the pearl, he was eager to help Coyotito once there was money involved.
Next, when people want money, they will do tons of different things to get what they want. An
example from the novel is like when They [took] the pearl. I have lost it, now it is over, the pearl is
gone (61). The thief wanted money so he did something as far as stealing from some just to get
money. In the end, his

15. Asthma Analysis
Asthma is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by acute episodic exacerbations against a
background of chronic persistent inflammation associated with structural changes that may produce
persistent symptoms and impaired pulmonary function (Martinez, 2011).
Asthma severity and asthma control are different terms but related pathogenesis. Asthma severity
describes the underlying disease process in absence of concurrent treatment to determine the initial
step of therapy. Asthma control describes the clinical status of disease in response to interventions.
However, the individual parameters which determine asthma severity and asthma control overlap
significantly (Yawn et al, 2006).
Assessment of asthma control has become a key element in asthma management. Asthma control is
assessed from two domains: symptom control and risk factors. Pulmonary function is an important
measure of asthma control and future risk and can be used as a monitoring tool in children. According
to the level of asthma control, patients are categorized into well controlled, partly ... Show more

Zeus, most likely the most renowned god of all gods, the mighty god of lightning has taken part in
some of the most widely known myths of all times. Zeus has taken part in many Greek and Roman

though, Zeus is the main character in almost all of the myths he is mentioned in. Whether the myth is
about his epic clash against the Titans, his fight against the Giants or even about his extramarital

When Hera found out about Zeus dirty deeds, she convinced Semele to ask Zeus for proof of his true
nature. Zeus agreed and presented himself to her in his true form, Zeus true glory however burned
Semele alive. (ML 301) This myth is a prime example of Zeus human tendencies of acting like a
common man as he gives in to his more primitive needs and cheats on Hera with Semele.
Another example of Zeus predisposition for not having control over his more human needs is the fact
that Aphrodite has power over him. Aphrodite, the very powerful goddess of love and lust, flaunts
about her alleged power over Zeus. This, however, angered Zeus and led to a very stern punishment
for Aphrodite. Zeus was growing tired of Aphrodite s arrogance, so he punished her by making her fall
in love with a mortal named Anchises.
Zeus affinity for being the main character of a myth is no different in the epic myth about his fight

his father Cronus and take his predestined place as king of the gods. In this myth however, Zeus has to

With the arrival of Republican admiral Gnaeus Domitus Ahenobarbus, communications back to Italy
were made very difficult because of the large fleet of ships that he brought with him which blockaded

Triumvirate, but only to block their communications with their supply base back in Italy. With this
swarming fleet they were able to outflank the Triumvirate and set up their own defensive positions
forcing Norbanus and Saxa to retreat from their positions moving west giving the Liberators the upper

demonstrating his bravery and credibility towards the concerned audience. This tone is an effective
rhetorical strategy since it basically shows the speaker s emotions and his ability to pass on these
emotions towards the audience. By doing so, Neville is able to successfully motivate the audience and
make sure that they all are involved in killing Lord Voldemort. Furthermore, Neville also uses an
authoritative tone, showing that he is not afraid of Voldemort, and ultimately proving that his life is
not worthy in comparison of any of the lives that he has taken from Neville s group of friends. This
specific tone is appropriate for the occasion because it was right after Harry s death, which made all of

focus of six public hearings that were held from April through August of 1976. There were 315

Additional comments were submitted by the public and the Final Staff Report was delivered to the

was extremely influential to geography, Europe s trade industry, as well as to future curious travelers.
He was the first explorer to travel as far as China and report of his findings. Consequently, seldom was

28. Tone In The Use Of Force
Have you ever read a book or a story and wondered how would you feel if the story was told by
someone else. Such as if it was told by a monotone person as opposed to an extremely energetic
person. Your perception of the story would be completely different. Take a very serious book, for
example, with a deep meaning. If it is told in a jokingly way, most people won t take it as serious and
they will think of it as a comedy. On the other hand if a comedy book told in a serious manner and
monotone, it wouldn t be as funny or it won t be funny at all. That is what the tone of a narrator can
do, it can make the story interesting or boring, it can make it sad or happy. In The Use of Force, the
narrator made the story seem dark and emotionless. In some cases, he even made the story seem a bit
weird like when he says, ...an unusually attractive little thing , and as strong as a heifer in appearance.

When I read The Use of Force the tone I got from it was a dark, late at night, kind of scary type feel,
almost like when kids don t want to go to the dentist because they think it s scary or how evil dentists
are portrayed in movies. As the narrator is telling the story, he doesn t really give us insight on
everything that is going on. The fact that he does this also contributes to the weirdness and darkness of
the story. Since the story is told from his point of view, we don t know the thoughts or actions of
everyone

29. The Reproduction of Inequality
Definitions In relation to the topic, MacLeod explains social reproduction as the theory that explains
how societal institutions perpetuate or reproduce the social relationships and attitudes needed to
sustain the existing relations of production in a capitalist society. (MacLeod 9) In this definition, the
societal institutions are places like, government offices, and schools. These institutions according to
him help continue to maintain the status quo by preserving the existing barriers between classes. To
investigate this there are two main ways to analyze the situation, one can use the advocate
deterministic model or the model that focuses more on the autonomy of the individual. The
deterministic model takes into account the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The final form of capital referenced is the cultural kind. This primarily deals with, from the section
entitled Cultural Capital and Habitus: Bourdieu s Theory of Reproduction, the general cultural
background, knowledge, disposition, and skills that are passed form one generation to the next.
(MacLeod 12) One term related to this premise is habitus, in the same article, Macleod referenced
Bourdieu in relation to this topic. Bourdieu s habitus is composed of the attitudes, beliefs, and
experiences of those inhabiting one s social world (MacLeod 13) and this combination results in
profoundly internalized beliefs and values that influence an individuals reactions toward various
aspects of life, most notable in this situation, education. What is most notable about this is how the
educational system reacts to these ideas of capital. In the article, Bourdieu comments, among all the
solutions put forward throughout history to the problem of the transmission of power and privileges ...
[the] solution which the educational system provides by contributing to the reproduction of the
structure of class relations and by concealing ... the fact that it fills this function. (Bourdieu 72) He
says this because the belief is that schools hold a neutral attitude when it comes to the ideas of capital.
It is this exact form of political correctness is continuing the cycle of the reproduction of inequalities.

30. Summary Of Novum Organum By Bacon
In Book I, sections xix xxx of Novum Organum by Bacon, Bacon is talking about acquiring
knowledge. He starts by stating that there are two possible ways of acquiring knowledge. The first
way is by collecting information and data through the senses and from there jumping to conclusions.
The second way is by collecting information, but instead of jumping to conclusions one gradually
ascends to these conclusions. By this, he means that there must be time and thought put into it in order
to come to the conclusions. Bacon claims that the way that is used now is the first way, however, the
best way is the second (Bacon 42). Next, Bacon explains that people tend to acquire knowledge using
the first way because people are lazy. The second way requires work and labor and people don t like
work so they take the simplest route possible. Acquiring knowledge the second way cause fatigue and
people like to go through life in the simplest and easiest way so they use the first way (Bacon 42).
When a patient man with a reflecting nature makes an attempt at the second way (understanding) there
is little effect. This is because understanding is unequal to the task of overcoming the obscurity of
things. In other words, understanding is not equivalent to comprehending the obscure or abnormal
qualities of nature (Bacon 42).
Both of the two ways begins with observation and collecting data. Likewise, both end with general
truths or self evident truths about nature. However, just because they

31. Essay about Tourette Syndrome
Tourette Syndrome
Works Cited Not Included
Tourette Syndrome was named for George Gilles de la Tourette, who first discovered the syndrome in
1885. Today there is still a mystery surrounding the disorder, it?s causes and it?s cures. But one of the
biggest mysteries is an associated behavior called coprolalia. This symptom is the uncontrolled
swearing or socially unacceptable utterances that some with Tourettes experience. Although despite
the media?s fascination, Tourette syndrome is not the cursing disease many believe it to be.
This baffling neurological disorder is characterized by repetitive motor and/or vocal tics. The
identifying symptom of TS seems to be tic disorders. ?A tic is a brief, repetitive, purposeless, ... Show

There are also utterances of insults and racial comments (Bruun 41). This seems the most commonly
recognized tic disorder of Tourettes. When most think of Tourette they automatically assume the
random cussing. Actually this seems to be a rare symptom. ?Coprolalia, the symptom that the general
public associates most often with TS, and it is not common?(Bruun 41).
It only occurs it a small minority of TS individuals. The numbers are an estimated 5 30% as reported
by the Tourette Syndrome Association in 1993. Some relate the coming on of an inappropriate word as
hard to control as a sneeze. They can feel it coming on but are unable to control it even with
medication (Michigan 1). One of the characteristics of coprolalia that sets it apart from just simply
swearing is that words come out compulsively. Most often when a person is angry but even if they are
just under stress (Kozlowski 1).
Causes of TS are still being debated and most leads are pointing to genetic factors. The understanding
of it seems to be incomplete and unfinished. But in 1999 researchers announced that they had found
evidence suggesting a link between chromosomes 4 and 8 and TS. Though there still is no clearly
identified gene to date. So all they can conclude is if one parent has TS there is a 50/50 chance for the
child to carry it unless it is liked by gender (Packer 5). A study done by Dr. Ruth Bruun indicated a

Introduction
Throughout this semester, I spent approximately 20 hours aiding teachers as well as learning the
importance of planning. Although teaching is the foundation that we see for the students, it is
important to understand that all of the teaching that occurs can not be done without the planning. This
essay will be informative of the planning, techniques, and models 1st grade English teachers at the
World Language Academy use to be most effective on the students they are teaching, as well as also
explaining the diversity among the students and teachers and how that affects both learning and
teaching. What is so significant about this, in my opinion, is that the classroom I was in uses a mixture
of direct instruction, cooperative learning, and student centered approaches. All of these methods in
one classroom make for a very successful teacher.
World Language Academy
The World Language Academy is an early education (grades K 5) school. The World Language
Academy, or WLA, is an academy that teaches all classes in both English and Spanish. Though not all
teachers can speak both languages, the students are taught both ways in order to excel in the real world
as they become older. As you walk into this building, the receptionist, casually dressed, giving you a

identifying study procedures and overall outcomes. It will also examine each of the seven dimensions
individually and clearly detect primary comparisons and contrasts of this model. Key implications of
each dimension will also be studied in relation to management of Multinational enterprises,
introducing appropriate examples throughout.
Geert Hofstede defines national culture as the collective programming of the mind distinguishing the
members of one group or category of people from others (Hofstede, 2012). Hofstede s findings were

The penultimate research of national culture referring to the study of value dimensions was conducted
by Michael Harris Bond. Bond carried out further exploration among a group of students by leading a
survey developed by Chinese professors, undertaken in 23 countries. This factor was called long term
orientation, which then resolved in becoming the fifth cultural dimension.
By 2010 the model was completed after a final two more dimensions were added, named pragmatism
and indulgence. The research carried out was conducted by Michael Minkov, who studied modern
World Values Survey data taken from population samples nationally. Author Robert R.McCrae
supports Hofstede s dimensions by believing that they represent a well validated operationalization of
differences between cultures as manifested in dominant value systems (McCrae, 2004). However, as
studied on the Geert Hofstede website, only 6 dimensions are needed and necessary in defining culture
attributes, resulting in pragmatism being dropped because of overlapping of meanings with long term
orientation.
Firstly, Hofstede s interpretation of power distance in comparing cultures is that it expresses the
amount by which a smaller amount of authoritative members of a civilisation agree and assume that
power in a culture is dispersed unequally.

35. Examples Of Injustice In King Lear
Greed; the inventor and enforcer of injustice. The selfish desire for power overtakes all morals and
values, which is shown prominently in the classic tragedy, King Lear. The characters of Lear and
Gloucester discover the effect of injustice through betrayal and the silence of their gods. Their
journeys of self discovery are shown through Shakespeare s use of symbolism, literary devices and
parallelism. Though one could argue that the banishment and dismissal of those close to them creates
an initial catalyst for chaos throughout the kingdom, the fate of these characters calls the Elizabethan
audience to question whether actions or beliefs decide ones destiny.

Too little care of this! Take physic, pomp;
Expose thyself to feel what wretches feel,

In doing so, Lear strips down to show his vulnerability. Clothing is now nothing more than a mask
used to disguise ones true self. Naked, insane, and isolated out in the storm, Lear sees that the Gods
must be capable of torment, after feeling susceptible from the effects of the storm and the isolation.
The emotional violence that Lear endeavours leads to his insanity, which ultimately plays a critical
role in his development of a character.
Similar to Lear s revolution, Gloucester is the mirror image of Lear s ego. Through
Gloucester s lack of appreciation and his selfish acts, he inherits the illusion of trust from him two
sons where only one stays loyal. Injustice causes the turning of Edmund
Gloucester s evil son shown through an un natural uprising of father to son, ending ultimately with the
betrayal between Gloucester and Edmund. Similarly to Lear

36. Mackie s Theory Of Moral Skepticism
Moral skepticism is defined as the denial of objective moral standards is correct, and that morality
therefore lacks any real authority (Shafer Landau). The concept of objectivity plays a part in the
theory of moral standards. Objectivity is used in the sense that a subject exists without its perception,
and that one can come to the same conclusion as everyone else given the same sources/information.
An object is in existence despite of any opinions or matters, which is why this principle is closely
associated with being reality and truth. Philosopher Mackie has a specific opinion on the ethical
theory called subjectivism or moral skepticism that discusses the falsehood of moral claims. Mackie
developed the principle of subjectivism, which states that morals claims do not exist. There is nothing

Relativity is used to discuss that moral codes are diverse and differ from societies. This argument
starts with the view that moral opinions vary among many people. Since there is not a universal
agreement on values, then values can t be objective. He uses relativity in response to cultural
relativism and states that individuals and groups don t come to their values and reflect way of life;
people practice their way of life and then come to their values. Different morals come from different
ways of life instead of having different views on moral beliefs. With this being said, if objective
values aren t the reason for moral beliefs, then there is no reason to believe in ethical claims. The
argument of queerness can take form being metaphysical. The metaphysical concept states that if there

37. The Role Of Serfs In Medieval Times
The medieval time period survived on a system that provided order and good military, this system was
called Feudalism. Serfs had a major role in the medieval time period, they were the ones, along with
the freemen, who did the hard work in the manor, not only for themselves to survive on, but for the
whole manor, the lord, and the king. Feudalism was a type of government, it was created not for
fairness, but for organization. Without serfs, the feudal system would deteriorate, therefore, there
needed to be a specific role for labor, or no drudgery would ever be done. Feudalism brought many
things to everyone in this time period, some people got more freedom than others, some worked
harder than others, everyone had a role, they may be treated differently for the role, but they all matter.
Serfs played a major role in a medieval manor. Serfs did most of the work in this time period. In the
beginning of the 1100 s, serfs were used for farming and they were able to farm more land, because
there was an increase in improved farming tools (Cels 8). 90% of the population of serfs, participated
in farming, the other 10% would produce goods or perform other types of labor (Hunt 18). If you were

38. Cardiac Muscle Structure
Structure The cardiac muscle is only found in the heart. This muscle had one nucleus and is an
involuntary striated muscle. Cardiac muscle also contains intercalated disc, which acts as a junction
between the two muscle cells in order to communicate. Also, the cell contains no motor nerve
terminals. The extracellular calcium ions and the cells of the heart act as a stimulus allowing it to
contract via electrical impulse. The cardiomyocytes/ myocardiocyteal muscle cells and the one
nucleus makes up the cardiac muscle. Skeletal muscles are the muscles that are under the control of
the somatic nervous system (voluntary) and are striated. Also they have many nuclei and are triggered
into motion via electrical impulses from the motor neuron terminals connected to the muscle fibres.
These motor neurons are coordinated by the central nervous system and are networked. A bundle of
collagen fibres known as tendons is usually attached to bones of the muscle. The muscle is made up of
individual components known as myocytes. These are made up of myofibers.
Role The main role of the cardiac muscle is to keep the heart beating. The muscle has a large number
of mitochondria and numerous myoglobins because the muscle is different to other muscle cells as it
never gets tired and it is to provide a good blood supply. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Lights blaring into my eyes, the crack of the bat, the shouting of the overly devoted parents, the salty

afternoons, in the spring, watching my brother succeed at America s pastime. He was really quite good

Sometimes things that have occurred in my life, and stuff I have received, that I may not have

There are many links between Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and A Doll s House, by
Henrik Isben. Each character goes through many ironic situations. Throughout both of the works
dramatic, situational, and verbal irony are used.
Dramatic irony is used throughout Crime and Punishment. The reader knows that Rodion
Romanovitch Raskolnikov killed the pawnbroker, Alyona Ivanovna, and her sister, Lizaveta Ivanovna.
A quote to support this is,
He took the axe right out, swung it up in both hands, barely conscious of what he was doing, and
almost without effort, almost effort, almost mechanically, brought the butt of it down on the old
woman s head. (Dostoyevsky ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In A Doll s House the reader is aware that Nora borrowed money from Krogstad without her husband
s permission. Nora also forged her father s name to gain the money. She says, You don t know all. I

that Torvald does not know of Nora s actions: Mrs. Linde. And since then have you never told your
secret to your husband? Nora. Good heavens, no! (Isben 13)
Another example of dramatic irony in A Doll s House is when Nora wants to practice a dance called
the Tarantella. When Torvald goes to look in the letter box Nora says, Torvald please don t. There is
nothing in there. (Isben 46) The reader knows that Nora has not forgotten the dance. The reader knows
this when Torvald goes to check the mail and Nora begins to play the Tarantella. Nora then says, I can
t dance to morrow if I don t practise with you. (Isben 46) The reader knows that all Nora is trying to
do is keep Torvald from reading the mail which contains a letter from Krogstad.

one who murdered the two sisters. It was totally unexpected when Nikolai came to

bed and attended services, Masses for the repose of my father s soul. I resisted the idea that he needed
any intercession to enter heaven, but participated as was expected of me (Barret 176). To some this
quote might show that Anna did not care for her father and had no reason to take the throne. However,
that is proven wrong in this quote, Under his guidance, I studied for hours every day, bending over the

Zizek is trying to address a systemic problem of objective violence that is a result of global isolation

developed West) nor any longer cultural (we in the West want to preserve our cultural identity), but
unabashed economic egotism. The fundamental divide is one between those included in the sphere of
(relative) economic prosperity and those excluded from it (102). This quote perfectly describes the
global epidemic that we now face, where the global community is so fixated on building walls and
turning our heads to those who do not fit our mold. What is more frightening, however, is that
economic egotism along with racial and sociological isolation is happening on a domestic basis. It s
not as simple as national pride and desire to keep our cultural intact, as Zizek notes. Rather, in the
United States, seen first hand in New Orleans, there is a blatant rejection for those who are not on the
same economic and social platform as ourselves(102). In Oryx and Crake, Margaret Atwood illustrates

Mrs. Mallard on the other hand doesn t like that kind of restriction. For example, when Mrs. Mallard
is told that her husband has been killed in a car accident she is very sad and depressed but within
minutes she is thinking about her freedom as expressed in the quote, Now her bosom rose and fell
tumultuously. She was beginning to recognize this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she
was striving to beat it back with her will as powerless as her two white slender hands would have
been. When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it
over and over under her breath: free, free, free! This proves that she was sad about her husbands death
but she liked the fact that she was a free

46. The Works Of Dr. Seuss, And Theodore Geisel
Have you ever thought about going from studying microscopic creatures to writing world renowned
works of literature was something anyone could do in one lifetime? What about writing 44 books that
inspire children all over the world? Consequently, this is exactly what Charles Rutledge (more
commonly known as Lewis Carroll) and Theodore Geisel (a.k.a. Dr.Seuss) did. While they were both
very successful and shared some of the same characteristics such as using made up words they had
immensely different writing styles, use of the various connotations of words, and creation of the
mood. To illustrate my point, let s take a look at what they did similarly. Both Dr.Seuss and Lewis
Carroll constantly used to make up words. Using a portmanteau

47. The Cornerstone Speech And The Thomas Nast s Cartoon
The cornerstone speech and the Thomas Nast s cartoon
The American Civil War erupted in 1861 due to the constitutional and ideological differences between
the Northern and the Southern states. The North advocated for equality and protection of human
rights. On the other hand, the South considered the white to be more equal than the blacks. There are
two historical documents that bring out the picture of the United States during the 1860s. The
documents are the cornerstone speech by Alexander H. Stephens and the editorial cartoon by Thomas
Nast that depict the inauguration of President Lincoln on 23rd, March 1861. The documents bring out
the racial and gender based prejudice that was rampant in the American society during the 19th
century. Stephens s speech provided the principles of the Confederacy state that were in contrast to the
policies of the Union.. Thomas Nast editorial cartoon shows the reaction of the North and South to the
election of President Lincoln. The South despised Lincoln since he was against slavery.
The cornerstone of the Confederacy
According to Alexander H. Stephens, the cornerstone of the Confederacy was slavery. Stephens
believed that the white were more superior to the blacks and deserved better privileges. It was the
natural and moral right of the white to be superior and the black to be inferior. He considered slavery
to be a natural and moral condition. Stephens was a strong advocate of slavery in America. The
Southern States of America supported

48. Dialects, Idoims, Slang, and Pronuciation of the American...
Dialects, Idioms, Slang and Pronunciation of the American Language
There are hundreds of regional dialects within the same language. These dialects reflect the everyday
experience of people living in different parts of the country and shape their cultural identity. Someone
from Pittsburgh sounds very different than someone from Texas, and if they speak to each other, they
will have a good guess as to where the other is from. The type of English spoken in the United States
is commonly known as American English (Delaney). Various dialects are the result of historical,
geographical, and social factors. There is a considerable range of language diversity within each of the
different dialectal speech communities, with individual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like all languages there is a large amount of social and ethnic variation within the language, but there
is also a great deal of variation from British English. (Upton) It has been shaped by its colonial history
in cultural aspects, but the separation from England has caused the language to evolve separately.
(Upton) Regional dialects in the United States generally reflect the elements of the language of the
nationality of the original settlers, or those who have consisted of a large percentage of immigration to
the area since then. Sociologists estimate the number of United States dialects range from three New
England, Southern and Western/General America to 24 or more. Some researchers even suggest it s
actually impossible to count the number of dialects in the United States because under a loose
definition of the term, thousands of cities, towns and groups have their own varieties of dialects.
(Wolfram, and Schilling Estes) Accent is the way people pronounce their words, the sound of their
voice but not the actual words. Dialect is the actual vocabulary and grammar used by people. Many
people tend to get accent and dialect confused. Different regional accents also affect how people are
perceived, people can be judged or stereotyped by their accent or dialect. Accent and dialect both
pertain to the way people speak, that s why some people often confuse these two terms. However, they
do not mean the same, and should not be used

49. Children Effective Communication
Communication is effective when what is trying to be conveyed is understood by the recipient quickly
and easily. Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with everyone at
any age and in any setting; how this is achieved varies but its value remains the same. Every
relationship begins with communication whether it be written or verbal if it is positive it starts the
relationship off positively and enables both parties to be happy to develop that relationship.
With children effective communication by way of showing them that you are interested in what they
have to say, getting down to their level and using appropriate language shows them that they are
valued. This feeling of value raises the child self worth

50. Age Of The Earth Research Paper
The debate about the age of the Earth has persisted for centuries! Some scientists try to disprove
Christians and some Christians try to disprove scientific evidence. Nevertheless, there is a surprising
number of Christians and scientists who have worked together to give their opinion about the age of
the Earth by using both Biblical and scientific facts. The purpose of this essay is to succinctly describe
both Old Earth and Young Earth viewpoints. My opinion about the matter will follow, in which I will
provide Biblical evidence to support my claims. Young Earth Creationists (YEC) strongly believe that
the time frame presented in the Bible is to be taken literally. Therefore, the majority of YEC believe
that the Earth is 6,000 to 10,000 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I support the idea that the Earth is truly 4.6 billion years old because I believe that the Bible uses the
word days when discussing creation because we can wrap our brain around God s time period. A
thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. Psalm
90:4 (NIV). This verse sums up exactly what I believe: that God s time scale is different than the time
scale we experience, therefore, a day to us could easily be a thousand years, or more to God. My next
premise is that when God created the Garden of Eden and all of the creatures of the Earth that the
Garden of Eden was a very sacred place. Therefore, I believe that very early humans, such as cavemen
were created outside of the garden because God was experimenting to see which specimen would be
perfect for ruling the Earth. Though this process of trial and error, God decided that he needed to
create a man who possessed similar qualities as He, because He is perfect. Then God said, Let us
make man in our image, in our likeness... Genesis 1:26 (NIV). Furthermore, I propose that it was the
Great Flood that caused the mass amount of dinosaurs to die. My theory is that once it began to rain,
massive landslides began occurring on the Earth s surface. It was these landslides that
