The desire for freedom is the greatest and most universal force known to humanity.

Although many of us believe we can do and act how we want, whenever we want to, philosophers have augured that this is not the case. There are various views on the notion of human freedom. Free will is the notion that people make choices and have the capacity to do otherwise than they choose. Determinism is the idea that all actions and events are determined or happen necessarily and that human actions are no different. Humanity is as free as a weather vane—a weather vane moves with the direction of the wind, and humans do too. Or to put it more pre- cisely, humans move and act in accordance with desires, impulses, and causes that are beyond our control. For the determinist, there is no freedom of the will. Indeterminism, on the other hand, claims that not all actions are determined and that humans have some amount of freedom. In other words, people have some amount of free will.
Our perception of reality seems to indicate to each of us that we are free and have free will; upon closer examination, it is not so obvious. Many philosophers argue that there is no way that humans can have such a thing as free will at all. They call this the dilemma of determinism, as the British philosopher, Colin McGinn (b. 1950), states in his Problems in Philosophy: The Limits of Inquiry (1993), that “Either determinism is true or it is not. If it is true, then all our chosen actions are uniquely necessitated by prior states of the world, just like every other event. But then it can- not be the case that we could have acted otherwise, since this would require a possi- bility determinism rules out. Once the initial conditions are set and the laws fixed, causality excludes genuine freedom.”
“On the other hand, if indeterminism is true,” McGinn continues, “then, though things could have happened otherwise, it is not the case that we could have chosen otherwise, since a merely random event is no kind of free choice. That some events occur causelessly, or are not subject to law, or only to probabilistic law, is not sufficient for those events to be free choices.”

FREEDOM: The Prime Motivator
Freedom is a prime motivator in human nature that is consistently desired across all people. Freedom means having the ability to act autonomously according to one's own desires and laws rather than being constrained or dominated by others. The history of the world involves an ongoing struggle between totalitarianism and anarchy as people constantly seek to either dominate others or resist being dominated themselves in their pursuit of independence and self-determination. The desire for freedom is the greatest and most universal force known to humanity.

Sigmund Freud lived between the 19th and 20th centuries when there were significant changes in society, politics, science and nations in Europe. He was an Austrian neurologist who is considered the founder of psychoanalysis. Freud developed theories about the unconscious mind and how unconscious desires and experiences are expressed through dreams. He proposed that the mind is divided into the id, ego, and superego and developed theories about psychosexual development through oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital stages. Key concepts in Freud's work include the Oedipus complex, the structure of the mind, and the interpretation of dreams as expressions of unconscious desires.

Although many of us believe we can do and act how we want, whenever we want to, philosophers have augured that this is not the case. There are various views on the notion of human freedom. Free will is the notion that people make choices and have the capacity to do otherwise than they choose. Determinism is the idea that all actions and events are determined or happen necessarily and that human actions are no different. Humanity is as free as a weather vane—a weather vane moves with the direction of the wind, and humans do too. Or to put it more pre- cisely, humans move and act in accordance with desires, impulses, and causes that are beyond our control. For the determinist, there is no freedom of the will. Indeterminism, on the other hand, claims that not all actions are determined and that humans have some amount of freedom. In other words, people have some amount of free will.
Our perception of reality seems to indicate to each of us that we are free and have free will; upon closer examination, it is not so obvious. Many philosophers argue that there is no way that humans can have such a thing as free will at all. They call this the dilemma of determinism, as the British philosopher, Colin McGinn (b. 1950), states in his Problems in Philosophy: The Limits of Inquiry (1993), that “Either determinism is true or it is not. If it is true, then all our chosen actions are uniquely necessitated by prior states of the world, just like every other event. But then it can- not be the case that we could have acted otherwise, since this would require a possi- bility determinism rules out. Once the initial conditions are set and the laws fixed, causality excludes genuine freedom.”
“On the other hand, if indeterminism is true,” McGinn continues, “then, though things could have happened otherwise, it is not the case that we could have chosen otherwise, since a merely random event is no kind of free choice. That some events occur causelessly, or are not subject to law, or only to probabilistic law, is not sufficient for those events to be free choices.”

First doctorate in psychology
The first doctorate in psychology is given to Joseph Jastrow, a student of G.
Stanley Hall at Johns Hopkins University. Jastrow later becomes professor of
psychology at the University of Wisconsin and serves as president of the
American Psychological Association in 1900.

First professor of psychology
The academic title “professor of psychology” is given to James McKeen Cattell in
1888, the first use of this designation in the United States. A student of Wilhelm
Wundt’s, Cattell serves as professor of psychology at University of Pennsylvania
and Columbia University.

APA founded
G. Stanley Hall founds the American Psychological Association (APA) and serves
as its first president. He later establishes two key journals in the field: American
Journal of Psychology (1887) and Journal of Applied Psychology (1917).

Functionalism
Functionalism, an early school of psychology, focuses on the acts and functions
of the mind rather than its internal contents. Its most prominent American
advocates are William James and John Dewey, whose 1896 article “The Reflex
Arc Concept in Psychology” promotes functionalism.
Psychoanalysis
The founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, introduces the term in a scholarly
paper. Freud’s psychoanalytic approach asserts that people are motivated by
powerful, unconscious drives and conflicts. He develops an influential therapy
based on this assertion, using free association and dream analysis.
Structuralism
Edward B. Titchener, a leading proponent of structuralism, publishes his Outline
of Psychology. Structuralism is the view that all mental experience can be
understood as a combination of simple elements or events. This approach
focuses on the contents of the mind, contrasting with functionalism.

After heading a laboratory at University of Pennsylvania, Lightner Witmer opens
world’s first psychological clinic to patients, shifting his focus from experimental
work to practical application of his findings.
