How can the FE and Skills sector best prepare to implement the FELTAG recommendations? These are our slides from a joint Jisc and FE Sussex workshop with college principals, leaders and governors under the auspices of the ETF Learning Futures programme TILIS project, Technology in Learning in Sussex.

4. FELTAG Mythbusting
âMy prediction for September 2015 is we will have lots of
courses that do have the mandatory 10% online provision â but
most of these will be of poor quality, with over stressed
teachers, stability issues with the systems, and the 10% being an
expensive tokenistic gesture that isnât integrated into the whole
teaching and learning process and cultureâ â Dave Foord

Common myths and misconceptions
5. FELTAG Mythbusting
âThe FELTAG â10% of learning should be onlineâ
recommendation has generated a lot of interest. One of our
recent webinars had over 500 people wanting to understand
more about it and a NIACE poll showed that more than 80% of
providers were not confident that their organisations
understood what the SFA requirements will be for online
learning.â â David Hughes, NIACE

Common myths and misconceptions
6. FELTAG Mythbusting
âWe are not expecting providers to convert 10% of learning
delivery in each programme of study âen blocâ to online to meet a
âdirectiveâ.â â SFA statement

7. FELTAG Mythbusting
âWe are encouraging providers to establish a strategy to:
âą determine where a greater âblendâ of delivery and assessment
types adds most value to a learning programme;
âą provide learners with improved access to learning outside the
classroom,
âą increase their ability to learn and to assess themselves at their
own pace as well as to develop new digital skills and
networking opportunities to enhance employabilityâ - SFA

âș Donât underestimate theVLE!
âș But what is the (learning) technology landscape of the
individual FE Sussex Colleges?
âMany technologies have direct relevance to the FELTAG
agenda, e.g. video production, test centres
âș What âunofficialâ products and services do people use?
âș What is the IT and e-Learning capability of the Colleges?
âe.g. skills in particular products and services
âș And likewise for students (weâll come back to this)

âș Versus:

âș Requires building by building survey â specialist tools?
âș Cable runs to locations not presently serviced, e.g. corridors
and support pillars
âș May need additional/replacement comms cabinets to
accommodate the extra cabling (Cat6 bend radius)
âș May need to replace Ethernet switches with Power over
Ethernet models (which may require active cooling)
âș Enterprise scale systems typically use wireless controllers â
will need at least two for redundancy
âș May need upgrade (e.g. from 1 to 10Gbit/s) if it proves popular
Opportunities for Colleges:Wireless infrastructure

âș Enabled by pervasive wireless
âș What does âYour Ownâ mean?
âIncreasingly common to give pupils/students tablets pre-
loaded with apps, content, licenses
âcf. Google Play for Education (NFC setup), Apple Device
Enrolment Programme (factory ship option)
âș What if I already have my own?

âș FE Sussex already has experience
here â sharing Finance, HR, Payroll
âș Could extend to other common core
functions, e.g. server and web hosting
and specific corporate apps
âș Potential to exploit cloud services,
but these effectively move IT spend from capex to opex
âș Shared services that directly impact on the student
experience, e.g. learning analytics / dashboard?
âș Common approach to attendance monitoring, video
production, e-Assessment, lecture capture, e-Portfolios
Opportunities for Colleges: Shared Services
