PREHISTORY Prehistory is the oldest and longest period of human history. It began more than one million years ago with the origins of the human race. It ended about 5.500 years ago, with the invention of writing.
PALEOLITHIC..
Human prehistory began with the Paleolithic Period. During this time, human beings were nomads who moved from place to place. p
They lived in caves or huts. They lived by hunting and fishing, and by gathering wild plant, like fruits, seeds, nuts and roots.
People lived in family groups called clans. They lived short lives and many babies died at birth. Paleolithic peoples also learned to use fire and to make tools from stone, bone and wood.
Paleolithic people started speaking to communicate with each other. They also developed religious beliefs and forms of art.
NEOLITHIC..
The Neolithic Period began about 10,000 years ago. During this period, human beings learned to cultivate plants and raise animals.
They became more sedentary because they didn’t need to move around to find food. Neolithic peoples built larger settlements too, such as villages and towns.
They also manufactured products, like cloth, baskets and pottery.
People lived in tribes, which were larger than clans. Each tribe member had a specific job, such as cultivating the land, looking after the animals or making tools and weapons.
METAL AGES.. The Metal Ages began about 6.000 years ago.
During the Metal Ages people started using metals, like copper, tin bronze and iron, to make tools and weapons. They heated and shaped the metals in hot furnaces.
People often used precious metals, like gold and silver, to make jewellery.
In the Metal Ages people invented sails to make their boats go faster. They also used wheels to create new forms of land transport.
With all these changes, people’s lives became easier. Villages and towns also became bigger and more prosperous. In time, people started building their first cities.
Settlements became villages, which were surrounded by walls for protection. Every village was run by a chieftain.
PREHISTORIC HERITAGE..
Prehistoric people were the first to: Use fire to cook their food and protect themselves from the cold Make clay pots Use animal hair and looms to make cloth Create art forms, such as cave paintings. Invent the wheel Make monuments with huge stones.
