Editor's Notes

  • #3 2nd , 3rd point: it is a compression exercise… Hence we can say a précis is a clear compact, logical summary of a passage. It gives only the essential or important ideas of original text. Basically its 1/3rd summary of the given paragraph.
  • #4 2nd point: read passage carefully and try to understand the main idea. In practice session u should practice u know it never hurts!! U can consult a dictionary to improve ur vocabulary and skills. But in exams try to grasp the idea what makes sense if a word is difficult u should assume by the sentence what I meant. A second reading is necessary and a third is often advisable for a deeper understanding Last two points will be studied later on…
  • #5 Phrase : a group of words which have particular meaning … or without a finite verb “ the green car” “ on Friday morning” are phrases avoid them.
  • #6 Draft is formed by the underlined points we which we mark during reading Unambiguous: clear in meaning that can be understood in one way only
  • #7 Narrative means to narrative .. Aap khud bayan kr rahy hon jaisy u should say like “the writer said/ he was going to/ etc.
  • #8 Reported: a report of what sb has said, that does not use their exact words. Universal truth: maths is the mother of all sciences. Etc :D Now that we’ve learnt the requirements, and what to do… we should know what “NOT” to do
  • #9 Illustration: a story, event or theory to explain an Idea Simile: a word or phrase for comparing sth to sth else e.g “a face like a mask”,,, “as white as snow” (*flawless white) or (stunning white)
  • #10 You must make up your mind from the beginning that précis writing means intensive brain work. there is no easy short cut to summarizing a passage. To tear the heart out of a passage means concentrated thought, and you must be prepared for close attention and hard thinking.
  • #16 If u don’t get it at the first time!.. Don’t worry keep on trying and u will master it…
