This document outlines recommendations for pre-operative patient evaluation by an anesthesiologist. It recommends that the anesthesiologist visit with the patient the day before surgery to plan anesthesia and assess the patient's medical fitness. During the visit, the anesthesiologist should evaluate the patient's cardiopulmonary, hepatorenal, endocrine and central nervous systems, and confirm normal vital organ function or delay surgery if abnormalities exist. The evaluation also includes checking the patient's pulse, blood pressure, blood sugar, temperature, respiration, kidney, liver and nervous system. Finally, the anesthesiologist should provide night orders to the patient regarding fasting, medications and any other specific instructions.
