WHAT IS PRAYER?
1. Prayer is an intercourse of the soul with God, not in
contemplation or meditation, but in direct address to
Him (God).
2. Prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look
toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love,
embracing both joy and trial.
3. Prayer is a conversation from one’s heart with God.
4. Prayer is a connection with God .
5. Prayer is an act of trust in God’s divine presence.
WHAT IS PRAYER?
6. Prayer is a search for God, but it is also a revelation of
God. Through prayer God reveals Himself as Creator
and Father, Redeemer, Saviour, as the Spirit who
“Scrutinises everything even the depths of the
God” (1Cor 2:10) and above all “the secrets of human
hearts” (Ps 43:22).
7. Through prayer God reveals Himself above all as Mercy
- which is the Love that goes out to those suffering ,
Love that sustains, uplifts and invites us to trust.
WHAT IS IT LIKE?
❖ Talking to your best
friend.
❖ Confiding in a brother or
sister.
❖ Like a father and a child
talk.
❖ Discussing with someone
what you are going
through.
If my people who are called
by my name humble
themselves, and pray and
seek my face and turn from
their wicked ways, then I
will hear from heaven and
will forgive their sin and
heal their land.
THE PARABLE
Luke 18:1-8 (NET) Then Jesus told them a parable to show
them they should always pray and not lose heart. 2 He said,
“In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God
nor respected people. 3 There was also a widow in that city
who kept coming to him and saying, ʻGive me justice against
my adversary.ʼ 4 For a while he refused, but later on he said
to himself, ʻThough I neither fear God nor have regard for
people, 5 yet because this widow keeps on bothering me, I
will give her justice, or in the end she will wear me out by
her unending pleas.ʼ” 6 And the Lord said, “Listen to what
the unrighteous judge says! 7 Wonʼt God give justice to his
chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he
delay long to help them? 8 I tell you, he will give them
justice speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes,
will he find faith on earth?”
WHETHER GOOD OR BAD YOU MUST PRAY
❖ Romans 12:12 (ESV) Rejoice in
hope, be patient in tribulation, be
constant in prayer.
❖ 2 Corinthians 4:1 (ESV) Therefore,
having this ministry by the mercy
of God, we do not lose heart.
❖ Colossians 4:2 (ESV) Continue
steadfastly in prayer, being
watchful in it with thanksgiving.
❖ 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (ESV) pray
without ceasing,
Therefore I tell you,
whatever you ask in
prayer, believe that
you have received it,
and it will be yours.
Mark 11:24 (ESV)

FORMS OF CHRISTIAN PRAYER
❖ Blessing
The prayer of blessing is a man’s response to
God’s gifts: in that we bless the Almighty who first
blesses us and fills us with His gifts.
❖ Adoration
It is an act which we glorify God who made us
and the acknowledgement of God’s awesome
greatness.
In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried
for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my
cry to him reached his ears. Psalms 18:6 (ESV)
FORMS OF CHRISTIAN PRAYER
❖ Praise
Is a response to God in the form of song and dance
and is a joy filled prayer. It recognises that God is
God.
❖ Thanksgiving
The Church’s greatest prayer. Acknowledging
God’s many gifts with a grateful heart.
If you remain in me and my words
remain in you, ask whatever you
want, and it will be done for you.
John 15:7 (NET)
FORMS OF CHRISTIAN PRAYER
❖ Petition
It shows how much we depend on God for our needs:
includes forgiveness and persistence in seeking him.
Being sorry for our sins and plead to cry out.
❖ Intercession
Asking on behalf of another, those we love and our
enemies. Jesus Christ intercedes for all of us with the
Father God Almighty.
Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon
him while he is near; Isaiah 55:6 (ESV)
WHY SHOULD WE PRAY?
❖ To bring us closer to God’s transforming presence.
❖ To strengthen us spiritually through God’s grace.
❖ To help our faith grow
❖ To help us listen to God’s
will for our lives.
❖ To seek divine assistance and wisdom.
Do not be anxious about
anything. Instead, in every
situation, through prayer and
petition with thanksgiving, tell
your requests to God. 7 And
the peace of God that
surpasses all understanding
will guard your hearts and
minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 (NET)
WHY SHOULD WE PRAY?
❖ It changes us
❖ Prayer brings light to
darkness
❖ It bring healing to the sick
❖ Helps us overcome
temptation
❖ Prayer is a weapon of
spiritual warfare
For our struggle is not
against flesh and blood, but
against the rulers, against
the powers, against the
world rulers of this
darkness, against the
spiritual forces of evil in the
heavens.
Ephesians 6:12 (NET)
