THE POWER OF
PRAYER AND FASTING
Matthew 17:14-21
14 And when they were come to the multitude,
there came to him a certain man, kneeling
down to him, and saying,
15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is
lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth
into the fire, and oft into the water.
16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they
could not cure him.
17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless
and perverse generation, how long shall I be
with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring
him hither to me.
18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he
departed out of him: and the child was cured
from that very hour.
19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and
said, Why could not we cast him out?
20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your
unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have
faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say
unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder
place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be
impossible unto you.
21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by
prayer and fasting.
“Prayer is reaching out after the unseen;
fasting is letting go of all that is seen and
temporal. Fasting helps express, deepen,
confirm the resolution that we are ready to
sacrifice anything, even ourselves to attain
what we seek for the kingdom of God.”
-Andrew Murray-
“Prayer should not be regarded as a duty
which must be performed, but rather as a
privilege to be enjoyed, a rare delight that
is always revealing some new beauty.”
-E.M. Bounds-
“This kind can come forth by nothing, but
by prayer and fasting.” Mark 9:29
WHAT IS PRAYER?
“The man who mobilizes the Christian
church to pray will make the greatest
contribution to world evangelization in
history.” -Andrew Murray-
“Prayer is where the action is.”
-John Wesley-
Prayer is the only way we can
communicate and talk to God.
There is no other way for God’s children
to speak to him but through prayer.
It is a special privilege only given to His
children: people who are spiritually
related and connected to the Father
through Christ.
Hebrews 4:16
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne
of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find
grace to help in time od need.
Prayer is more than just lip service.
Words are nothing without the presence and
involvement of the Hoy Spirit.
No one can truly say he is praying to God by
merely saying a prayer or reciting a prayer.
It must come from the heart and inspired by
the Holy Spirit.
Most prayers simply turned into a routine
mental exercise with no spiritual intent to
worship God but only to fulfill a religious
obligation in order to feel satisfied.
THE KEY ELEMENTS OF
PRAYER
“You can do more than pray after you
have prayed; but you can never do more
than pray until you have prayed.”
-A.J. Gordon-
Confession
Psalm 66:18
If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not
hear me.
I John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins, and to cleans us from all
unrighteousness.
Acts 8:22
Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and
pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart
may be forgiven thee.
Worship and Adoration
Since it is God that we talk to, we must have
the attitude of worship when we pray.
It means we need to always humble ourselves
before His presence as we face His throne of
Grace.
We need to understand that prayer is not a
right but a privilege He has given to us as His
children.
So, in prayer, we always need to recognize His
holiness and His will combined with our
unworthiness before the presence of God.
I Timothy 2:8
I will therefore that men pray every where,
lifting up holy hands, without wrath and
doubting.
Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is the way to give Him back
all the glory.
All His blessings and benefits to us must
go back to Him in full circle.
Colossians 4:2
Continue in prayer, and watch in the
same with thanksgiving.
Intercession
Intercession is having others in mind and
telling our God that we agree with their
concerns and their desires as they come
to Him in prayer according to His will.
I Thessalonians 1:2
We give thanks to God always for you all,
making mention of you in our prayer
Supplication
This is our humble way to entreat or to
ask earnestly from God. It is giving all our
petitions to Him, recognizing Him as the
only source of everything.
Philippians 4:6
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing
by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your request be made
known unto God.
Faith
Prayer in faith means believing and doing
all the things He has told us to do.
James 5:15
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and
the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have
committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
The Holy Spirit’s power
Praying in Spirit means being controlled
by the Holy Spirit. It is to completely
submit to the presence and inspiration of
the divine Spirit.
Ephesians 6:18
Praying always with all prayer and
supplication in the Spirit, and watching
thereunto with all perseverance and
supplication for all saints
The Right Attitude of the
Heart
Prayer is not only an act. It is an attitude
of the heart. To pray without ceasing is to
always be in tune with God all the time.
I Thessalonians 5:17
Pray without ceasing
Romans 12:12
Rejoice in hope; patient in tribulation;
continuing instant in prayer
THE MODEL PRAYER
“One should never initiate anything that
he cannot saturate with prayer.”
-Unkown-
All Prayers Must Be Addressed
to the Heavenly Father.
John 15:16
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you,
and ordained you, that ye should go and bring
forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain:
that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in
my name, he may give it you.
Matthew 6:9
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our
Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy
name.
All Our Prayers Must Be in the
Name of the Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only and True Mediator
Between God and Me.
John 14:13‐14
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name,
that will I do, that the Father may be glorified
in the Son. 14 If ye shall ask any thing in my
name, I will do it.
I Timothy 2:5
5 For there is one God, and one mediator
between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
All Our Prayers Must Be in the
Power of God, the Holy Spirit.
Jude 20
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on
your most holy faith, praying in the Holy
Ghost,
FASTING
I Corinthians 7:5 Defraud ye not one the other,
except it be with consent for a time, that ye
may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and
come together again, that Satan tempt you not
for your incontinency.
“Fasting is important, more important perhaps,
than many of us have supposed...when exercised
with a pure heart and a right motive, fasting will
provide us with a key to unlock doors where other
keys have failed, a window opening up new
horizons in the unseen world; a spiritual weapon of
God’s provision, mighty, to the pulling down of
strongholds.” -Arthur Wallis-
What is Fasting?
“Fasting reminds us that we are sustained
by every word that proceeds from the
mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4
But he answered and said, It is written, Man
shall not live by bread alone, but by every
word that proceedeth out of the mouth of
God.
“Food does not sustain us; God sustains us.”
-Richard Foster-
1. Be sure to prepare physically, emotionally,
intellectually, and spiritually before you fast.
2. Fast to strengthen your physical and spiritual
beings, not to destroy.
3. When fasting, be sure to spend the time
praying and serving God.
4. After fasting and praying, it is time to do the
will of God.
THE SANCTUARY OF
PRAYER
“The true Church lives and moves and
has its being in prayer.”
-Leonard Ravenhill-
Our Church must not only be used as an
office, or a place for Sunday school, but
daily, people must be encouraged to
come anytime to spend time with the
Lord to pray.
It Must Be a Place of Worship
It Must Be a Place of Beauty
It Must Be a Place of Quietness
It Must Be a Place of Humility
It Must Be a Place of Decency
GOD’S PEOPLE MUST
BE PRAYER WARRIORS
“What the Church needs today is not
more machinery or better, not new
organizations or more novel methods, but
men whom the Holy Ghost can use – men
of prayer, men mighty in prayer.”
-E.M. Bounds-
He loves to see our faith and our dependency
on His goodness.
It gives Him glory to see His people obeying
and enjoying His abounding goodness.
God delights greatly to listen to our prayers
and to hear us agreeing with His will and plan.
It is our goal and must be our desire to please
Him and glorify Him the way He wants to be
magnified and glorified.
II Chronicles 7:14
If my people, which are called by my name,
shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek
my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then
will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their
sin, and will heal their land.
The Qualities of a
Prayer Warrior
1. He is related and in close
fellowship with the Lord
2. He is humble and constant in
prayer
3. He seeks God’s face
4. He turns his wicked ways
I John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to
forgive us our sins, and to cleans us from all
unrighteousness.
PRAYER MINISTRY IN
THE CHURCH
“Prayer does not fit us for the greater
work. Prayer is the greater work.”
-Oswald Chambers-
We do not only pray when someone or we
need help or assistance from God.
We pray to express our worship, thanksgiving,
and honor to the king of Kings and Lord of
Lord. We pray to recognize that He has all the
prerogatives to allow every experience in our
lives.
SATURDAY PRAYER AND
FASTING SERVICE
“He who runs from God in the morning
will scarcely find Him the rest of the day.”
-John Bunyan-
No one can ever become an expert in prayer.
As God’s people we need to constantly
ask God to help us pray, and like His Apostles,
to teach us to pray. (Luke 11:1)
No amount of articulation, emotion, or
seriousness can turn anyone into a prayer
professional.
Prayer is the world of God through His people.
It is the divine and powerful work of the Spirit
through any individual who is willing to be
used by God as an instrument of His grace.
THE PRAYER SESSIONS
“The main lesson about prayer is just this:
Do it! Do it! Do it! You want to be taught
to pray. My answer is pray and never
faint, and then you shall never fail...”
-John Ladlaw-
“Prayer is the secret of power.”
-Evan Roberts-
First Session:
Pray Alone
Praying alone is to spend the prayer time alone
with God. The purpose of this session is not only
to be alone in praying but to also focus on
one’s personal and individual concerns, which
includes the confession of personal sins.
Most of our prayers in the Church are about
the concerns of the ministry and other people.
We seldom consider our own individual needs.
Subsequently, we find our prayers not so
effective for we know less about our spiritual
condition before God.
“be still and know that I am God.”
Psalm 46:10
Second Session:
Pray with your Family
In most prayer time in the Church, it is very
seldom to see the whole family praying
together.
In this session, family prayer is encouraged.
Husbands and wives are paired together. If the
children are present, the children also join in.
Third Session:
Pray for the Church Family
This is the first intercessory prayer
concentrating to pray for the Church family
and the whole ministry.
Fourth Session:
Pray for the Unbelieving World
and the Government
The focus of this second intercessory prayer is
the unbelievers, the unbelieving world,
including the government.
Here the names of those people who are not
saved are mentioned before God.
We do not only pray for those who are not
saved but also for those people who can be
used by God to reach them with the message
of the gospel.
II Chronicles 7 :14
If my people, which are called by my name,
shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek
my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then
will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their
sin, and will heal their land.
Fifth Session:
Pray for the Sick
This is one of the most powerful prayer
sessions based on the experience of the
International Bible Baptist Church.
In this session we have seen the miraculous
power of God healing the sick.
James 5:13‐16
13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is
any merry? let him sing psalms.
14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the
elders of the church; and let them pray over
him, anointing him with oil in the name of the
Lord:
15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick,
and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have
committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray
one for another, that ye may be healed. The
effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man
availeth much.
II Corinthians 12:7‐9
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure
through the abundance of the revelations,
there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the
messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should
be exalted above measure.
8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that
it might depart from me.
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient
for thee: for my strength is made perfect in
weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather
glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ
may rest upon me.
Sixth Session:
Pray for the Pastor a d other Church
Leaders
It is very seldom we hear the Church members
really pray intently for their Pastors and
Preachers in the Church except when they are
in the privacy of their own homes.
In this session, the people are given the
blessed occasion to minister and bless their
leaders with the mention of their names, their
ministries, their individual concerns, and their
families before the presence of God.
James 5:16
Confess your faults one to another, and pray
one for another, that ye may be healed. The
effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man
availeth much.
Seventh Session:
Pray for Unity of the Local Church
The prayer for unity is the last session.
During this session, the Pastor leads the whole
Church in prayers while all their hands are
joined together in unity as they form a big
circle before the presence of the Almighty God.
As the Pastor prays, everyone also prays and
agrees in prayer for unity and effectiveness in
the work of the Lord.
John 17:21
That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in
me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in
us: that the world may believe that thou has
sent me.
GOD ANSWERS ALL THE
PRAYERS OF THE SAINTS
“We have to pray with our eyes on God,
not on the difficulties.”
-Oswald Chambers-
God Answers YES
When we ask in faith and when we ask
according to His will.
He also answers yes when He is pleased with
our lives.
God Answers NO
When we doubt Him and do not seek His face
daily and do not live according to His will, He is
sore displeased and grieved.
Although He wants to give us our needs and
sometimes our wants, it is His greater desire to
see us obey Him, learn from Him, and put Him
first in our lives.
God Answers WAIT
When God wants to deal with us and to teach
us patience and endurance, He wants us to
learn the virtue of patience to complete its
perfect work through us.
He answers WAIT when He wants to answer
YES to our prayers eventually and to prepare us
in accomplishing His perfect will in our lives.
“God is never early and never late. He is
always on time.”
Romans 8:28
And we know that all things work together for
good to them that love God, to them who are
the called according to his purpose.
VARIOUS POWERFUL
TESTIMONIES ON PRAYER
“God does nothing except in response to
believing prayer.”
-John Wesley-
“Prayer does not change the purpose of God.
But prayer does change the action of God.”
