The Program
Harvey T. Dearden
BSc CEng FIET FInstMC MIMechE AFIChemE
Harvey has over 35 years’ experience in the process
industries, having worked for end users, contractors,
vendors and consultants, and is known for his expertise in
process control and protection and related risk assessment
and management concerns. Latterly he worked as site
engineering manager for a major chemical company in the
UK and now has an independent consulting practice.
Harvey combines these varying perspectives with a real
passion for the engineering discipline and is the author of
‘Professional Engineering Practice: Reflections on the Role
of the Professional Engineer’. He is known to many through
his involvement with the Institution of Measurement and
Control and his numerous articles in the technical press.
An engaging speaker, Harvey strives not to simply convey
information, but to establish real understanding of lasting
value to the audience. With his extensive experience and
excellent communication skills, you will walk away from this
workshop with valuable know-how that you can apply
immediately to your work.
The method of sizing and selecting a control valve for a specific application is generally not well
understood. Although there are many factors that need to be taken into account the subject is not
difficult to understand if dealt with in a logical manner. It is claimed that the majority of control valves
throughout the world have not been correctly sized and that large numbers operate on manual mode.
Many maintenance problems result from people treating the symptoms of a problem rather than
tackling the true cause. A basic understanding of the principles is all that is usually needed to solve
the problem for good. This practical, hands-on workshop is designed to maximise knowledge
retention and understanding. It provides an opportunity for participants to discuss with the presenter
and others, specific problems and appropriate solutions. All delegates take away a detailed and
comprehensive copy of the material presented.
Pre-requisites: No specialist knowledge or skills are required – only a technical background so
that there is an understanding for such factors as the difference between pressure and force. In fact
this workshop is a good introduction for someone who has had no dealings with control valves in the
past as well as an important refresher workshop for control valve specialists who benefit from the
back–to-basics approach.
